Notes: [Auszug] During RV Valdivia cruise VA 13-2, 1976, a very thick ferromanganese crust (20-40 cm) was dredged near the summit of a submarine peak at a depth of 4,830m in the Central Pacific7'8. In this crust, which directly overlies altered basaltic rock, three macroscopically distinguishable main zones (top ...

Notes: Abstract The Zambales ophiolite is the major source of chromite ore in the Philippines. The chromitites are concordant cumulates and are associated with distinct chromitite-bearing sequences within the mantle peridotites. Refractory and metallurgical chromite deposits are spatially separated and related to different lithologic associations, which crystallized from different parental magmas. — Refractory chromite ores (30–44 wt% Cr2O3; 20–30 wt% Al2O3) are linked with the peridotite-troctolite-olivine gabbro lineage. Two main types were found: (1) Al-rich refractory ores associated with harzburgites and feldspathic periodotites and (2) more Cr-rich varieties associated with lherzolites. — Metallurgical chromite ores (45–53 wt% Cr2O3; 12–18 wt% Al2O3) are linked with the peridotite-pyroxenite-norite lineage. Two main types were also found: (1) Cr-rich metallurgical ores associated with orthopyroxenites and (2) more Al-rich varieties related to clinopyroxenites. — The chemical composition of chromite within the deposits varies depending on the chromite/silicate ratios of the ore types and grades continuously into accessory chrome spinels in the wall-rock peridotites. — The geochemistry of accessory chrome spinels in various peridotites and mafic cumulates depends on the mineralogical composition and the stratigraphic position of their host rocks.

Journal of Geochemical Exploration, 3(4), 303-317, https://doi.org/10.1016/0375-6742(74)90001-6

Description: A radioisotope energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) system has been used on board the German research vessel "Valdivia" during an exploration expedition in the northern equatorial Pacific in 1973. The instrumentation used consisted of an X-ray detection system incorporating a 30 mm2 effective-area Si (Li) detector with a measured energy resolution of 195 eV for Mn K alpha X-rays, standard nuclear electronics, a 1024-channel analyser and a data read-out unit. The X-ray spectra in the manganese-nodule samples were excited by a 30-mCi 238Pu source. The six elements Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn were analysed on board. Precision values for the analyses were less than 3% for Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu and Zn and about 5% for Co. A total amount of 350 analyses was carried out during a one-month cruise. Average contents of 190 analysed whole manganese-nodule samples from all the sampling sites of the covered area were 23.3% Mn, 6.7% Fe, 0.23% Co, 1.16% Ni, 0.94% Cu and 0.10% Zn. The average content of the base metals expressed as the sum of the Co, Ni, Cu and Zn contents was 2.48%. A linear relationship between Mn and Ni in all analysed samples, including whole manganese-nodule samples, zones of manganese nodules and manganese crusts, was observed. The Mn/Ni ratio calculated by regression analysis was 23.0. Zonal variations of the chemical contents of the six elements in the manganese nodules were found. A size classification of the manganese nodules has been suggested. Geochemical correlations of Cu and Ni versus Mn/Fe in the investigated samples are given.

Description: Manganese nodules collected from three areas (C, F, and G) on a N-S equatorial Pacific transect at 134° W by R. V. Sonne show differences in size, morphology, surface density and composition which can best be interpreted in terms of the biogenic theory of nodule formation. These data indicate that the biogenic hypothesis is central to an understanding of manganese nodule genesis in the equatorial Pacific and in particular influences the nodule shape, surface texture, rate of growth, composition, and mineralogy. The nodule characteristics in this region are also influenced by the hydrological characteristics of the bottom water, sedimentation rates, local geological and tectonic conditions (including seeding eflects) and topography.

Description: Four hundred and twenty kilograms of manganese nodules were recovered at Station U205 in the Tasman Sea. They were sorted by size class. Representative subsets for each size class were chemically analysed and their avearge composition is presented in the published table. Samples were alaysed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. For this purpose, samples were ground to 80 mesh, dried at 105°C for at least 24 hours and fused with "Spectromelt A 12" (Merck 11802, containing 66% lithium tetraborate and 34% lithium metaborate). To prepare glass beads, 1 g of Mn nodule materail was mixed with 1 g of flux and heated in a RF-furnace for about 5 minutes.

Description: Manganese nodules from VA13/2 cruise (R/V Valdivia) were selected for a variety of morphologies and size. They were regrouped by size class and chemically analyzed in bulk. Mn, Fe, Ni, and Cu concentrations were determined by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy following grinding and drying of the samples at 1l0°C for 24 hr. The elements Co, Zn, Al, Si, and Ba were analyzed in selected samples by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in Aachen. In addition, the percent lithogenous fraction of selected samples was determined following treatment of the sample by 25 percent HCl. Element composition in these nodules was then computed on a lithogenous-free basis to make allowance for the effects of variation in the silicate contents of the nodules.
