    Notes: Abstract: Major metabolites of octopamine and tyramine in the Limulus nervous system are identified here as γ-glutamyl octopamine and γ-glutamyl tyramine. We show that these conjugates are normal products of amine metabolism in Limulus, and that they are normally present in octopamine-rich Limulus tissues. The synthesis of these conjugates is not restricted to nervous tissue, but the highest activity of γ-glutamyl amine synthetase was measured in the CNS. Our interest in these molecules stems from our previous observations which showed that they were synthesized and stored in, and released from, the efferent fibers to Limulus eyes which modulate the sensitivity of the eyes to light. Here we provide direct evidence for the release of the conjugates from Limulus eyes in response to depolarization, and that γ-glutamyl octopamine can increase the sensitivity of the lateral eye to light. Our observations lend support to the hypothesis that γ-glutamyl octopamine may serve as an intercellular messenger in the Limulus visual system.

    Notes: A modulated continuous wave diode laser was used to generate ultrasonic Lamb waves in a thin steel plate. No surface damage was evident on the sample, a feature due to the low power density of the acoustic source in contrast to the high power pulsed laser systems usually employed for laser-ultrasound generation. The Lamb waves were monitored using a surface bonded optical fiber interferometer whose output was correlated with the pseudorandom binary sequence used to modulate the laser diode. In this fashion, it was possible to record a time domain history of the ultrasonic propagation in the sample. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: SYNOPSIS. Tracer technic has proved to be an excellent tool in the study of predator-prey relationships among the foraminifera. More than fifty axenic species of protists including diatoms, dinoflagellates, chlorophytes, chrysophytes, cyanophytes, bacteria and yeasts were tested as potential food for Allogromia sp (NF), A. laticollaris, Am. monia beccarii, Quinqueloculina spp, Rosalina floridana, Anomalina sp, Elphidium sp, Spiroloculina hyalina, Globigerina bulloides, and Globorotalia truncatulinoides. Although many types of potential food are present in the environment, foraminifera select only certain organisms. The yeasts, cyanophytes, dinoflagellates, chrysophytes and most bacteria tested were not eaten. Selected species of diatoms, chlorophytes and bacteria were eaten in large quantity. Three additional factors affect feeding: the “age” of the food organism, the “age” of the foraminifer or its position in the life cycle, and the concentration of the food. Feeding by foraminifera on most food is erratic below a concentration of 103 organisms and is approximately directly proportional to concentration within a range of 103-106 organisms per 10 ml experimental tube. A natural bloom of Protelphidium tisburyensis was analyzed. A high concentration of 6 species of diatoms characterized the community. A “bloom”-feeder hypothesis for foraminiferal nutrition is presented.

    Notes: Crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM), an advanced photosynthetic pathway conferring water conservation to plants in arid habitats, has enigmatically been reported in some species restricted to extremely wet tropical forests. Of these, epiphytic Bromeliaceae may possess absorbent foliar trichomes that hinder gas-exchange when wetted, imposing further limitations on carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake. The hypothesis that the metabolic plasticity inherent to CAM confers an ecological advantage over conventional C3 plants, when constant rainfall and mist might inhibit gas-exchange was investigated. Gas-exchange, fluorometry and organic acid and mineral nutrient contents were compared for the bromeliads Aechmea dactylina (CAM) and Werauhia capitata (C3) in situ at the Cerro Jefe cloud forest, Panama (annual rainfall 〉  4 m). Daily carbon gain and photosynthetic nutrient use efficiencies were consistently higher for A. dactylina, due to a greater CO2 uptake period, recycling of CO2 from respiration and a dynamic response of CO2 uptake to wetting of leaf surfaces. During the dry season CAM also had water conserving and photoprotective roles. A paucity of CAM species at Cerro Jefe suggests a recent radiation of this photosynthetic pathway into the wet cloud forest, with CAM extending diversity in form and function for epiphytes.

    Notes: Summary Ten cultivars of maize, a number of which are high yielding in the presence of the weed Striga asiatica in sub-Saharan Africa, were tested for resistance and tolerance to this root hemiparasite. Observed in rhizotrons, Striga asiatica attached and developed on roots of all cultivars, indicating that none exhibited a true resistance mechanism. However, root exudates from two cultivars, IWD STR Co and Zea diploperennis BC4C2, stimulated relatively little germination of S. asiatica, indicating low xenognosin production, with few parasites attaching and no significant decrease in host height or biomass apparent after 55 days of infection. Cultivar 98 Syn WEC also exhibited no significant differences in height and biomass on infection despite high xenognosin production and a lack of resistance to parasite attachment and development, indicating the operation of a tolerance mechanism. Cross-breeding of these low xenognosin-producing maize cultivars and Striga-tolerant lines could produce cultivars that perform exceptionally well on Striga-infested soils. This study highlights the need for cereal breeders to distinguish between the different mechanisms underpinning host performance in the presence of Striga.

    Notes: Decimation of cereal growth and yields by hemiparasitic Striga species cannot be accounted for entirely by the removal of host-plant resources. The production of toxic compounds by the parasite has been suggested. An investigation of three species of the economically important Striga and the related Alectra vogelii has now resulted in the isolation of eight iridoid glucosides (mussaenosidic acid, mussaenoside, gardoside methyl ester, bartsioside, isoaucubin, melittoside, aucubin and eurostoside), two caffeoyl phenylethyl glycosides (calceolarioside  A and verbascoside) as well as shikimic acid and trigonelline, all identified by NMR spectroscopy. The iridoids are potent cytotoxins and probably represent an anti-herbivore defence system common to Scrophulariaceae (sensu lato). This has the potential to explain differences in tolerance apparent for contrasting host taxa and cultivars. The nature of the iridoids present also provides additional validation of the recent transferral of parasitic Scrophulariaceae (s.l.) to Orobanchaceae.
