Description: We collected seawater samples during TRANSDRIFT XXII Expedition in September and October 2014 along with CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth) profiles with a SBE 32 rosette water sampler equipped with 12 Niskin bottles (2.5 L) under ice-free conditions onboard the Russian research vessel RV Viktor Buynitskiy on the entire Laptev Sea shelf and above the shelf slope. The dataset includes nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, total nitrogen, phosphate, silicate and oxygen concentration data, as well as pH and total alkalinity, which provide important information on the geochemical state of the Laptev Sea.

Description: Within the framework of the Russian-German BMBF-funded TRANSDRIFT project moored upward-looking Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) were deployed in the Laptev Sea between 2013 and 2015. Two upward-looking Workhorse 300 kHz Sentinel ADCPs (manufactured by Teledyne RDI) were deployed at the 1893 and Taymyr stations in September 2013. During a Russian expedition in September 2014 both moorings were recovered and partly redeployed at the two stations until September 2015 (one upward-looking ADCP was substituted in 2014). The four data sets (ADCP_BT_1893_1314.txt, ADCP_BT_Taymyr_1314.txt, ADCP_BT_1893_1415.txt and ADCP_BT_Taymyr_1415.txt) are named to indicate the location of the deployment (station name) and the sampling period. Each file contains hourly values of error velocity (in mm/s) and range (beams 1 to 4, in m) data that was recorded using the ADCPs bottom track (BT) mode. Additionally, the instruments roll and pitch values (in deg) are included. The deployment sheets are attached as well. All moorings were equipped with numerous other instruments. Their data has been published separately.

Description: Within the framework of the Russian-German BMBF-funded TRANSDRIFT project moored Upward-Looking Sonars (ULSs) were deployed in the Laptev Sea between 2013 and 2015. Two ULS of the type Ice Profiling Sonar 5 (420 kHz, manufactured by ASL Environmental Sciences) were deployed at the 1893 and Taymyr stations in September 2013. During a Russian expedition in September 2014 both moorings were recovered and redeployed at the two station until September 2015. The four labels (ULS_1893_1314, ULS_Taymyr_1314, ULS_1893_1415 and ULS_Taymyr_1415) are named to indicate the Location of the deployment (station name) and the sampling period. Each dataset contains values of daily averaged sea ice draft (in m). The deployment sheets are attached as well.

Description: We collected filtered seawater samples from full water column profiles conducted near the Lena River delta during a winter expedition to the Laptev Sea. The samples were recovered during TRANSDRIFT XX Expedition in March and April 2012 using 2-l-Niskin bottles mounted on a frame equipped with a SBE 19plus CTD profiler (Sea-Bird Electronics Inc.). The dataset includes silicate, phosphate and oxygen concentration data of 28 seawater samples, which provide important information on nutrient sources and cycling in the Laptev Sea.

Description: Large gradients and inter annual variations on the Laptev Sea shelf prevent the use of uniform property ranges for a classification of major water masses. The central Laptev Sea is dominated by predominantly marine waters, locally formed polynya waters and riverine summer surface waters. Marine waters enter the central Laptev Sea from the northwestern Laptev Sea shelf and originate from the Kara Sea or the Arctic Ocean halocline. Local polynya waters are formed in the Laptev Sea coastal polynyas. Riverine summer surface waters are formed from Lena river discharge and local melt. We use a principal component analysis (PCA) in order to assess the distribution and importance of water masses within the Laptev Sea. This mathematical method is applied to hydro‐chemical summer data sets from the Laptev Sea from five years and allows to define water types based on objective and statistically significant criteria. We argue that the PCA‐derived water types are consistent with the Laptev Sea hydrography and indeed represent the major water masses on the central Laptev Sea shelf. Budgets estimated for the thus defined major Laptev Sea water masses indicate that freshwater inflow from the western Laptev Sea is about half or in the same order of magnitude as freshwater stored in locally formed polynya waters. Imported water dominates the nutrient budget in the central Laptev Sea; and only in years with enhanced local polynya activity is the nutrient budget of the locally formed water in the same order as imported nutrients.
