    Description: X-band Synthetic Aperture Radars (X-SARs), able to image the Earth’s surface at metric resolution, may provide a unique opportunity to measure rainfall over land with spatial resolution of about few hundred meters, due to the atmospheric moving-target degradation effects. This capability has become very appealing due to the recent launch of several X-SAR satellites, even though several remote sensing issues are still open. This work is devoted to: (i) explore the potential of X-band high-resolution detection and retrieval of rainfall fields from space using X-SAR signal backscattering amplitude and interferometric phase; (ii) evaluate the effects of spatial resolution degradation by precipitation and inhomogeneous beam filling when comparing to other satellite-based sensors. Our X-SAR analysis of precipitation effects has been carried out using both a TerraSAR-X (TSX) case study of Hurricane “Gustav” in 2008 over Mississippi (USA) and a COSMO-SkyMed (CSK) X-SAR case study of orographic rainfall over Central Italy in 2009. For the TSX case study the near-surface rain rate has been retrieved from the normalized radar cross section by means of a modified regression empirical algorithm (MREA). A relatively simple method to account for the geometric effect of X-SAR observation on estimated rainfall rate and firstorder volumetric effects has been developed and applied. The TSX-retrieved rain fields have been compared to those estimated from the Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) in Mobile (AL, USA). The rainfall detection capability of X-SAR has been tested on the CSK case study using the Correspondence to: F. S. Marzano (marzano@die.uniroma1.it) repeat-pass coherence response and qualitatively comparing its signature with ground-based Mt. Midia C-band radar in central Italy. A numerical simulator to represent the effect of the spatial resolution and the antenna pattern of TRMMsatellite Precipitation Radar (PR) and Microwave Imager (TMI), using high-resolution TSX-retrieved rain images, has been also set up in order to evaluate the rainfall beam filling phenomenon. As expected, the spatial average can modify the statistics of the high-resolution precipitation fields, strongly reducing its dynamics in a way non-linearly dependent on the rain rate local average value.

    Notes: The amount of charges induced by high energy single ion irradiation at a p-n junction diode has been measured and its dependence on the ion incident position has been evaluated by using single-ion microprobe technique. By irradiating single He ions with various incident energy (1.4–4.05 MeV), dependence of the profiles of collected charges on the ion incident energy has been investigated. Origins of the different profiles among the different incident energy are discussed in terms of different contribution of two mechanisms of charge collection, namely, field funneling and diffusion of carriers. In the case of the ion incidence within the junction area, dependence of the charge collection profile on the ion incident energy comes from different contribution of the funneling in the charge collection process, while difference in the collection efficiency of the diffused charges affects the profile in the case of the ion incidence at outside of the junction. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Effects of interface structure and oxidation state were studied in stacked magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) structures with top and bottom antiferromagnetic layers to obtain optimum resistance and high tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) ratios for read heads. The roughness of the NiFe surface and the Al coverage were significantly improved by introduction of O2 surfactant gas on the Ta-seed-layer surface, which increased TMR ratios of the MTJ with low resistance area (RA) products of less than 10 Ω μm2. Furthermore, it was found that avoidance of Ni oxidation and Co oxidation at the tunnel barrier interface is essential to obtaining high TMR ratios, and that a good Al coverage and Fe–oxide formation may enhance TMR ratios when Fe-rich magnetic materials are used. For the top-type and bottom-type structures, a TMR ratio of 12%–17% with RA products of 6–7 Ω μm2 was obtained, which provides sufficient performance for read heads. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: There is great interest in the cosmetic field in improving the shape of the face, which is determined by the amount of bone, muscle and subcutaneous fat. We examined the amount of facial subcutaneous fat in healthy women by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and investigated the distribution of fat in relation to the body shape. A total of 38 healthy women; 10 lean, 18 normal and 10 obese subjects, were examined by cephalometric MRI to obtain T1-weighted images, by which fat regions can be clearly observed. The area of subcutaneous fat was greater in obese subjects than in normal subjects, and was decreased in lean subjects. At 45 measured points, the thickness of subcutaneous fat was greater in the cheek near the nose independently of the body shape, and the surface of the masseter muscle and lower jaw increased according to the body mass index (BMI). This research suggested that there are two types of regions, one type maintains fat mass and the other type increases with BMI.

    Notes: In this study, age-associated changes in facial skin, cosmetologically critical factors, were studied in terms of local subcutaneous fat tissue. The subjects were 98 Japanese females evenly chosen from their teens to 70s. On each subject, the thickness of subcutaneous tissue was determined by the ultrasonic B mode method on four facial sites, forehead, orbit, cheek, and mandible. Age-association of the tissue thickness was facial site-dependent. In the orbit, the subcutaneous tissue became thicker with age, whereas it showed a tendency of thinning in the forehead. No clear age-association was observed in the cheek or the mandible. To analyze the age-association further, the data were stratified into ‘lean group’ and ‘obese group’ based on their BMI, and subjected to multiple regression analysis. The age-association in the orbit was much more distinctive in the lean group than in the obese group.

    Notes: Five heterogeneous IgA-immunodeficient patients were analysed for expression of the α-chain gene. The number of surface IgA-bearing B cells was low in four patients Southern blot analysis indicated no deletion of immunoglobulin structural genes coding for Cα or α switching-region genes. The number of surface IgM and IgA double-bearing B cells increased in some patients. Addition of recombinant tnterieukin 4 (rIL-4). rIL.-5. and rIL-6 to the normal B cells enhanced IgA production. However. B cells of the patients showed no or one-third lower IgA production in response to these lymphokines, even though there was proliferation ill 4, rIL -5, and rIL-6 induced low or no expression of α mRNA of the patients B cells These results suggested that the patients lacked B cells able to produce transcripts for the IgA heavy chain, and that some patients’B cells might be defective at the switch-recombination process from u to a or from μ to α or from μ and α to α.

    Notes: An epidermoid cyst of the sole was studied immunohistochemically and ultrastructurally. Papillomavirus particles were present in the horny layer and in the upper layers of the epidermis of the cyst and within the acrosyringeal epithelium overlying the cyst. Thickened basal lamina-like structures similar to those found in the eccrine sweat duct tumors such as in cylindroma and eccrine spiroadenoma existed at the epidermal-dermal junction of the cyst wall. Carcinoembryonic antigen was immunohistochemically demonstrated in the center of the epidermoid cyst and the DAB reaction products took the shape of a circle resembling that of the sweat ducts in the horny layer.

    Notes: Elastic fibers were found in the amyloid islands of primary systemic amyloidosis heredo-familial amyloid polyneuropathy, macular amyloidosis and amyloidosis cutis nadularis atraphicans. In macular amyloidosis, the elaunin fibers in amyloid islands were loosely arranged, waved and twisted. In systemic amyloidosis and arm. loidosis cutis nodularis atrophicans, amyloid fibers did not deposit in homogeneous electron-lucent material of elastic fiber, but were located close to the elastic fiber where the peripheral microfibrils were present.
