Description / Table of Contents: The Principles of Ion Selective Electrodes and of Membrane Transport is a collection of research works on the theory, principles, and fundamentals of ion-selective electrodes and of membrane transport. This book is organized into two parts encompassing 15 chapters that highlight the application of the membrane model. Part A is a general discussion of membrane potentials and membrane transport. This part describes the formulations of the interfacial potential contribution due to phase boundaries. This part also explores the diffusion potential, the nonideality of diffusion layers or membrane phases, the liquid-junction potential arising in conventional potentiometric measuring cells. Other topics covered in this part include the practical solution for the membrane potential; the ion-transport and the electrical properties of bulk membranes; and the characteristics of lipid bilayer membranes. Part B considers the fundamentals of ion-selective electrodes. This part begins with discussions of the principles, response behavior, ion selectivity, and detection limits of solid-state membrane electrodes. This part also examines several important extensions and modifications of the Sandblom-Eisenman-Walker theory; the characteristics of neutral carrier membrane electrodes; and the theory of glass electrodes.

Notes: Summary Silicone rubber is a universal membrane matrix for neutral carrier based ion-selective electrodes. Carrier antibiotics as well as synthetic ionophores yield sensors with selectivities that are comparable or even higher than those of corresponding poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane systems. The permeability of silicone rubber membranes for gas molecules is about ten times higher than the permeability of PVC membranes. In contrast, the electrical conductivity is by a factor of 10–100 lower.

Notes: Summary A simplified theoretical analysis of the kinetic behavior of immobilized enzymes is presented. The theory permits easy characterization and intercomparison of the performance of enzyme electrodes, and of enzyme reactors coupled to potentiometric sensors. The basic parameters governing the steady-state- and the dynamic response of enzyme electrodes as well as the conversion efficiency of enzyme reactors are elucidated. The theoretical results are compared with earlier approaches and with experimental data.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Eine Reihe von 15 anionenselektiven Membranen, beruhend auf unterschiedlichen quaternären Ammoniumionen und auf verschiedenen Weichmachern, führt auch bei voneinander abweichenden Membranzusammensetzungen durchwegs zur Selektivitätssequenz: $$ClO_4 - 〉 SCN - 〉 I - 〉 NO_3 - 〉 Br - 〉 Cl - 〉 HCO_3 - \sim OAc - \sim SO_4 ^2 - \sim HPO_4 ^2 - .$$ .
Notes: Summary A series of 15 anion-selective membranes, based on quaternary ammonium compounds of different constitution and on a variety of plasticizers in different compositions of the solvent polymeric membranes, lead throughout to the selectivity sequence $$ClO_4 - 〉 SCN - 〉 I - 〉 NO_3 - 〉 Br - 〉 Cl - 〉 HCO_3 - \sim OAc - \sim SO_4 ^2 - \sim HPO_4 ^2 - .$$ . A detailed analysis demonstrates that the selectivity pattern of such systems may be drastically modified only if a) a mobile, positively charged site with a sufficiently strong and specific interaction with anions is chosen and/or b) an electrically neutral anion-selective membrane component is used.

Notes: Summary A system consisting of a miniaturized enzyme reactor and a novel ammonium-selective minielectrode was designed for urea determinations in 10-μl samples. A discontinuous technique was devised in view of a high measurement reproducibility. The parameters of the measuring procedure were carefully optimized. The applicability of the urea analyzer was tested using 122 blood serum samples from patients. The results of the enzymatic/potentiometric method agreed favorably with the reference values determined by the diacetyl monoxime method. The relative residual standard deviation found for such linear correlations (slope 1.0) was ±6% over the 1 to 45 mM urea range.

Notes: Summary The key results of a theoretical model of immobilized-enzyme reactors and enzyme electrodes are summarized, and the applicability of the theory is discussed. The model was used to analyze the performance of a miniaturized urease reactor (coupled to an ionselective electrode cell). For the freshly prepared reactor a substrate-conversion efficiency of ∼100% was established. Aging of the reactor was quantitatively studied by fitting theoretical curves to experimental response data and evaluation of the kinetic parameters. The life time turned out to be limited by an exponential decay of enzyme activity.
