Kurzfassung: The purpose of this article is to present results of a research in which the results of four serological tests were compared for the diagnosis of swine brucellosis in pigs from Brazilian herds in which the outbreak occurred in relation to other brucellosis-free.  Rose Bengal (RBT), complement fixation (CFT), agglutination plus 2-mercaptoethanol test (TAT+ME), and commercial fluorescence polarization assay (FPA) were used to test 333 sera (271 sows and 62 finishing pigs) from a Brucella suis infected swine herd and 1,100 swine sera from brucellosis free pigs taken at a slaughterhouse. Considering infected all the 271 sows from the outbreak, and interpreting results of the FPA according to the manufacturer directions, sensitivities observed were 95.94% for FPA, 94.83% for RBT, 93.73% for CFT, and 92.25% for TAT+ME. Considering infected all the pigs from the infected herd with a positive result in at least one test, sensitivities observed were 98.92% for RBT, 97.13% for CFT, 96.06% for FPA, and 94.98% for TAT+ME. Specificities of the tests were CFT and TAT+ME, 100%; FPA, 99.55%; and RBT 99.27%. Results indicated a good performance of all the tests, and the agreement among them was almost perfect.

Kurzfassung: Leishmaniasis is an endemic disease in Goiás and has high lethality owing to its high zoonotic potential. In dogs, the disease manifests based on the parasitic load, with clinical presentation as the starting for diagnosis. Diagnostic methods are used to confirm the disease, with emphasis on lymph node aspiration cytology, which is a high-standard technique owing to its low cost, ease of performance, and high specificity. The aim of this study was to demonstrate aspiration lymph node cytology as a diagnostic method for canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) in areas containing low-income populations with poor access to molecular tests. Three dogs with suspected CVL were studied at Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Jataí, in which popliteal lymph node cytology was performed, owing to easy access, and screening and confirmatory examinations were undertaken by the Central Public Health Laboratory. The results showed three positive animals in the cytology and only one positive in the other tests; therefore, there was the possibility of the occurrence of false negatives in serological tests given the time required for seroconversion. Thus, cytology is an important diagnostic technique in areas where molecular tests are not available.

Kurzfassung: The purpose of this article is to review the literature on the essential technical aspects of implementing the pulsed Doppler, as part of the teachings to their use in the diagnosis of changes in the canine reproductive system. A narrative review was carried out, using scientific articles, monographs, theses and dissertations published and available in online databases: Periodical Capes (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel), SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online) and Google Scholar, in addition to specific books on the topic. Two-dimensional ultrasound has been widely used in medicine since 1942, leading to advancements in disease identification and subsequent prognosis. In terms of vascular assessment, Doppler ultrasound is used to evaluate the blood flow inside the vessel, its direction, and hemodynamic pattern. Among all types of Doppler ultrasound, the Color Doppler (CD), Power Doppler (PD), and the Pulsed-wave Doppler (PW) are commonly used in the identification of abnormalities through ultrasound flow imaging and the analysis of hemodynamic indices: peak systolic velocity (PSV), end diastolic velocity (EDV), resistance index (RI), and pulsatility index (PI). To accurately estimate these hemodynamic indices, however, it is essential to know the technical adjustments and parameters such as the pulse repetition frequency (PRF), size of the sample volume (Gate), angle of insonation, gain, baseline, and wall filter, which need to be corrected to avoid technician derive artifacts such as aliasing, signal absence, and mirror imaging. In medicine, the use of Doppler Mode in reproductive functions is already well established, but its use in veterinary medicine is still a subject of recent studies.

Kurzfassung: Given the importance of the reproduction field combined with the use of the Pulsed-Wave (PW) ultrasound in the clinical routine, this study aims to review the application of this diagnostic method in the reproductive tract of females and males of the canine species. A narrative review was carried out by using scientific articles, monographs, dissertations and thesis published and available in online databases: Periodical Capes (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel), SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online) and Google Scholar, in addition to specific books on the topic. In female dogs, Doppler ultrasound can be used to evaluate hemodynamic conditions in the estrous cycle (e.g. estimating day of ovulation and fertility, diagnosing early pregnancy, abnormalities, and fetal stress, thus ensuring greater obstetric safety) and identification of diseases, thereby avoiding unnecessary surgical interventions. In male dogs, however, Doppler ultrasound is mainly used in vascular evaluations in order to identify hemodynamic changes due to occurrence of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), most common disease of the prostate and in the assessment of testicular arteries to better understand spermatogenesis and diseases that affect the testicle. In this review, we demonstrate that the use of Doppler mode ultrasound, especially the PW, allows dynamic analysis in clinical examination and complements important information in the diagnosis and treatment of different reproductive disorders in dogs.

Kurzfassung: Neoplasms are among the most impacting disease diagnoses in veterinary medicine and have become increasingly common due to the greater longevity of animals as living conditions improved. The Mongolian gerbil is a small rodent species that has become popular recently. In these animals, the occurrence of neoplastic processes is relatively common, mainly tumors of the ventral gland in males and ovarian tumors in females. This work aims to report an ovarian tumor in a Mongolian gerbil Meriones unguiculatus Milne-Edwards 1867 (Rodentia, Muridae). At the initial presentation, the animal had dyspnea, prostration, and increased abdominal volume in the topography of the right ovary of approximately 2 cm. The animal was submitted to exploratory laparotomy because of the emergency nature of the case and the owners’ refusal of additional exams due to financial restrictions. Thus, an ovariohysterectomy was performed, followed by a histopathological examination. The histopathology revealed an ovarian papillary carcinoma affecting both ovaries and cystic endometrial hyperplasia. With surgical removal and drainage of the thoracic fluid, the animal showed good recovery, with general improvement and return to regular activity, with a life expectancy of two years. Currently, the demand for specialized veterinarians for unconventional pets is increasing. This condition allows owners to raise their animals more properly, favoring greater longevity. Knowledge about the prevalence and incidence of diseases in different species is of enormous relevance in establishing the appropriate therapy, improving life quality, and increasing life expectancy in animals’ lives.

Kurzfassung: The Canine Monocytic Ehrlichiosis (CME) is an infectious disease that commonly affects dogs of all breeds and ages. It is caused by the bacterium Ehrlichia canis and is transmitted by the tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus. The disease may pre-sent itself in the acute, subclinical, and chronic forms. The present study reports the case of a 2-year-old male Border Collie with advanced stage CME, attended at the Pet Clinic of the Veterinary Hospital of the University Federal de Jataí, which resul-ted in medullary aplasia. The diagnosis of marrow aplasia was based on the necroscopic and histopathological examinations. At necropsy, the diaphyses of the long bones were filled with diffuse, strongly whitish and pasty tissue, typical of the adipose tissue, also found in the femoral epiphyses. The histopathology showed unilocular adipose tissue as the major constituent of the bone marrow and rare islands of marrow cells. These findings were compatible with severe hypoplasia of the red bone mar-row and hyperplasia of the white bone marrow, affecting hematopoiesis, resulting in the laboratory alterations observed in the hematocrit, WBC, and plateletogram.

Kurzfassung: Tetanus is an infectious disease caused by the toxin of Clostridium tetani, a gram-positive anaerobic bacterium that affect domestic animals and humans. On February 17, 2019, veterinary medical care was requested at a property located in the city of Jataí, Goiás to attend the case of an undefined breed male horse of approximately 15 years of age, chestnut hair, weighing 400 kg. During the consultation, the main complaint was lameness and prolapse of third eyelid. At the clinical examination, the animal showed spasticity, rigid walking, distant hind limbs, third eyelid prolapse, hyperesthesia, extended neck, tail away from the body, mild dyspnea, intense sweating, distended nostrils and erect and immobile ears. Based on the physical examination of the animal, as well as the clinical signs presented, the final diagnosis of tetanus was established and therefore, the treatment was immediately instituted with intravenous anti-tetanus serum and antibiotic therapy. Hence, this paper aims to report a case of tetanus in equine, elucidating the main clinical signs and implemented treatment.

Kurzfassung: Background: Haw’s syndrome results in bilateral projection of the third eyelid, which is caused by a dysfunction of the sympathetic innervation in the region, not accompanied by other ocular changes. It has been mostly seen in cats, under 2-year-old and, it usually shows an acute presentation. It is believed that the disorder may be self-limiting, but several infectious etiologies have been proposed, together with diarrhea. The aim of the study was to report a case of a 2-year-old mixed breed male feline, castrated and diagnosed with Haw’s syndrome, associated with an infectious condition given the presence of Giardia sp.Case: A 2-year-old male, mixed-breed cat and orchiectomized, was admitted and treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Jataí. In the anamnesis, the owner complained that the cat had had pasty brown diarrhea for 4 days and a projection of the third eyelid. He emphasized that the animal used to have some episodes of diarrhea sporadically and the last deworming was carried out 3 months ago from that day. He reported contact with other random street and outdoorcats. On the physical examination, bilateral projection of the third eyelid was observed without any other visible alteration. The third eyelid projection was responsive to the mydriatic and adrenergic [phenylephrine 10%] eye drops instillation test. Complete blood count and serum biochemical evaluation of creatinine, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) concentrations were performed. In addition, abdominal ultrasound and parasitological examination of feces were requested. Complete blood count showed eosinophilia and serum biochemical evaluations were within reference values. The coproparasitological examination detected Giardia sp. On the ultrasound, no significant changes were observed. The recommended treatment was anthelmintic [fenbendazole 50 mg/kg, SID, for 5 days] . However, one week later, the coproparasitological examination still showed Giardia sp. Given this scenario, the chosen treatment was the use of nitazoxanide [25 mg/kg, BID, for 7 days]. Therefore, the patient presented emesis and the treatment with nitazoxanide had to be suspended. Thus, metronidazole [25 mg/kg, BID, for 7 days] was prescribed, in addition to the environmental disinfection and daily litter box cleaning, all performed with quaternary ammonia. After 1 week of treatment with metronidazole, the patient’s clinical improvement and reversal of the third eyelid projection were observed.Discussion: This case proved to be consistent with the data found in the literature, in which cats younger than 2-year-old are affected by Haw’s syndrome and may present concomitant diarrhea. On the physical examination, the parameters evaluated were within normal reference for the cat species and the bilateral projection of the third eyelid was the only alteration found in the patient. The prognosis for the patient with Haw’s syndrome and concomitant giardiasis is favorable, as longas the intestinal infection is treated briefly, in order to prevent the chronicity of the enteroparasitosis. The need of more studies is evident in order to explain the Haw’s syndrome pathology and so, clarify the real cause of this disease. Since the syndrome is mostly, a self-limiting disease, interventions with topical ocular drugs are not necessary. However, in the event of a concomitant disease, infection or underlying cause, it must be treated correctly. Attention is drawn to the need of feces examination through coproparasitological evaluation in cases of diarrhea. Keywords: cat, diarrhea, intestinal parasitosis, nict membrane.
