    Notes: Abstract  Ninety-six F2.F3 bulked sampled plots of Upland cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., from the cross of HS46×MARCABUCAG8US-1-88, were analyzed with 129 probe/enzyme combinations resulting in 138 RFLP loci. Of the 84 loci that segregated as co-dominant, 76 of these fit a normal 1 :  2 : 1 ratio (non-significant chi square at P=0.05). Of the 54 loci that segregated as dominant genotypes, 50 of these fit a normal 3: 1 ratio (non-significant chi square at P=0.05). These 138 loci were analyzed with the MAPMAKER∖ EXP program to determine linkage relationships among them. There were 120 loci arranged into 31 linkage groups. These covered 865 cM, or an estimated 18.6% of the cotton genome. The linkage groups ranged from two to ten loci each and ranged in size from 0.5 to 107 cM. Eighteen loci were not linked.

    Notes: Abstract Newlywed spouses (N=215 couples) were tested on 21 tests of specific cognitive abilities and responded to a questionnaire on their educational and socioeconomic (SES) background. A comparison of the present spouse correlations with those of long-standing marriages suggests that spouses resemble each other in abilities from the start and that the degree of resemblance changes little over time. The low spouse correlations for SES of origin (their parents) suggests that education is the chief SES variable by which spouse selection takes place. Spouse resemblance in education and parental SES could explain almost all of the spouse correlations in perceptual speed and spatial ability. However, a small but significant degree of spouse similarity in verbal and reasoning abilities was independent of education and SES.

    Notes: Abstract A number of studies have lent support to the sex-linked major gene theory of spatial ability. Expectations arising from this theory (although not necessarily unique to it) are that spatial ability can be measured in children, that it is the same as spatial ability in adults, and that an individual's position in a distribution of spatial ability remains unchanged over time. Results of a longitudinal experiment utilizing test scores of 76 high school students and their earlier test scores provide confirmatory evidence for these expectations.

    Description: BACKGROUND The objective of this study was to determine the effects of postoperative radiation therapy (PORT) and lymph node dissection (LND) on survival in patients with pancreatic cancer. METHODS The 2004 to 2008 Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database was analyzed to identify patients with pancreatic cancer who underwent surgery and received chemotherapy and to evaluate the correlation between overall survival (OS), PORT, and LND. RESULTS In total, 2966 patients were identified who underwent pancreatic resection (1842 PORT, 1124 no PORT). Median survival, 1-year OS, and 3-year OS were 21 months, 77%, and 28%, respectively, with PORT versus 20 months, 70%, and 25%, respectively, without PORT ( P  = .02). Subset analysis revealed that the benefit of PORT was limited to lymph node-positive (N1) patients. Median survival, 1-year OS, and 3-year OS for patients with N1 disease were 19 months, 73%, and 25%, respectively, for those who received PORT versus 18 months, 67%, and 20%, respectively, for those who did not receive PORT ( P  〈 .01). An increasing lymph node count was associated with increased survival on multivariate analysis in all patients and in patients with N1 disease (both P  〈 .001). Significant cutoff points for OS based on LND in patients with N1 disease were identified for those who had ≥8, ≥10, ≥12, ≥15, and ≥20 lymph nodes resected. Multivariate analysis for OS revealed that increasing age, T3 and T4 tumors, N1 stage, and moderately and poorly differentiated grade were prognostic for increased mortality, while female gender, PORT, and LND were prognostic for decreased mortality. In patients with N1 disease, other than patient age, all of these factors remained significant. In patients with N0 disease, only T1 and T2 tumor classification and having a tumor that was less than high grade were associated with survival benefit. CONCLUSIONS This SEER analysis demonstrated an associated survival benefit of PORT and LND in patients with N1, surgically resected pancreatic cancer who received chemotherapy.     Description: Sedimentary hydrocarbon remnants of eukaryotic C26–C30 sterols can be used to reconstruct early algal evo- lution. Enhanced C29 sterol abundances provide algal cell membranes a density advantage in large temperature fluctuations. Here, we combined a literature review with new analyses to generate a comprehensive inventory of unambiguously syngenetic steranes in Neoproterozoic rocks. Our results show that the capacity for C29 24- ethyl-sterol biosynthesis emerged in the Cryogenian, that is, between 720 and 635 million years ago during the Neoproterozoic Snowball Earth glaciations, which were an evolutionary stimulant, not a bottleneck. This bio- chemical innovation heralded the rise of green algae to global dominance of marine ecosystems and highlights the environmental drivers for the evolution of sterol biosynthesis. The Cryogenian emergence of C29 sterol biosynthesis places a benchmark for verifying older sterane signatures and sets a new framework for our understanding of early algal evolution.
