Notizen: Abstract The interaction of a wetting front with an impervious surface can be described very easily in the early stages of interaction by using a superposition principle. After the time when the superposition principle fails to describe the interaction properly, two flow regimes are analysed. For most of the interaction the profile is only affected by the impervious surface near that surface and in particular the inflow into the soil layer is unchanged. Then, only at the very end of the process is the inflow decreasing because of the impervious surface.

Notizen: Abstract The interaction of a wetting front with an impervious layer is described by adding a reflected solution to the incoming solution for a semi-infinite medium. It is shown and checked by comparison with a numerical solution that the result is accurate during the early times of the interaction between the front and the impervious surface. This superposition principle is quite general and should prove especially useful to initiate numerical schemes by this analytical approximation as in the early times singularities are difficult to describe numerically.

Notizen: Abstract New formulae giving the position of the wetting front and the surface water content during horizontal infiltration when the surface flux is specified are presented. The flux can be any smoothly-varying function of time, though only nonhysteretic flow is modeled. The approximation is in excellent agreement with an exact analytical solution existing for constant boundary flux and a nonlinear Fujita diffusivity. It is also successfully compared with a further exact solution existing for a particular time-varying flux.

Notizen: Abstract An estimate of the sorptivity that requires only the knowledge of simple integrals of the soil-water diffusivity weighted by a power of the water content is present. The result is checked systematically for diffusivity functions with very different behaviours: power law, exponential and the two Fujita diffusivities. In all cases the error is always less than 1% regardless of whether or not the diffusivity increases rapidly with water content.

Beschreibung: Time compression approximation (TCA) is a practical and often quite accurate tool to predict postponding infiltration for field applications. A modified approximation (MTCA) can be used just as easily and, in general, will reduce the error by about 50%. This is based on two results: (1) After ponding, TCA and MTCA predict very close infiltration rates; and (2) MTCA, but not TCA, uses the actual cumulative infiltration up to the ponding time. Thus, TCA has an additional error in its prediction of postponding infiltration. Previously, those results, including the 50% reduction in error, were observed numerically for linear and Burger's soils. They are illustrated here numerically with an actual soil (a Grenoble sand). More importantly, we developed a general analytical approximation for this problem and showed that it can provide a very convenient predictive tool which can then be used for arbitrary soil properties.

Beschreibung: Estimating sapwood area is one of the main sources of error when upscaling point scale sap flow measurements to whole-tree water use. In this study, the potential use of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) to determine the sapwood–heartwood (SW–HW) boundary is investigated for Pinus elliottii Engelm var. elliottii x Pinus caribaea Morelet var. hondurensis growing in a subtropical climate. Specifically, this study investigates: (i) how electrical resistivity is correlated to either wood moisture content, or electrolyte concentration, or both, and (ii) how the SW–HW boundary is defined in terms of electrical resistivity. Tree cross-sections at breast height are analysed using ERT before being felled and the cross-section surface sampled for analysis of major electrolyte concentrations, wood moisture content and density. Electrical resistivity tomography results show patterns with high resistivities occurring in the inner part of the cross-section, with much lower values towards the outside. The high-resistivity areas were generally smaller than the low-resistivity areas. A comparison between ERT and actual SW area measured after felling shows a slope of the linear regression close to unity (=0.96) with a large spread of values ( R 2 = 0.56) mostly due to uncertainties in ERT. Electrolyte concentrations along sampled radial transects (cardinal directions) generally showed no trend from the centre of the tree to the bark. Wood moisture content and density show comparable trends that could explain the resistivity patterns. While this study indicates the potential for application of ERT for estimating SW area, it shows that there remains a need for refinement in locating the SW–HW boundary (e.g., by improvement of the inversion method, or perhaps electrode density) in order to increase the robustness of the method.
