    Notizen: The chloromercurate(II) salts of 2-, 3- and 4-chloropyridine display a variety of anion stoichiometries and structures, including the rare [Hg3Cl10]4− stoichiometry. 2-Chloropyridinium trichloromercurate(II), (I), (C5H5ClN)[HgCl3], monoclinic, P21/n, a = 9.094 (8), b = 18.143 (4), c = 12.902 (3) Å, β = 106.13 (4)° with Z = 8, has the [HgCl3]− stoichiometry, but the anions are infinite chains composed of [HgCl3]−, HgCl2 and Cl− moieties linked by longer Hg...Cl contacts. Hydrogen bonds link the cations to the formal Cl− ions. Tetrakis(3-chloropyridinium) decachlorotrimercurate(II), (II), (C5H5ClN)4[Hg3Cl10], monoclinic, P21/n, a = 7.522 (2), b = 28.046 (3), c = 9.165 (2) Å, β = 105.78 (2)° with Z = 2, has the rare [Hg3Cl10]4− stoichiometry and contains infinite one-dimensional double-stranded {([HgCl4]2−)2 [HgCl2]}n anionic chains made up of linear HgCl2 and distorted [HgCl4]2− entities linked together by longer Hg...Cl contacts. The HgCl2 moieties are joined by double [HgCl4]2− bridges. Hydrogen bonds link the cations to the sides of the anionic columns. Tetrakis(4-chloropyridinium) decachlorotrimercurate(II), (III), (C5H5ClN)4[Hg3Cl10], triclinic, P1¯, a = 9.907 (3), b = 13.226 (2), c = 7.282 (2) Å, α = 84.41 (2), β = 74.81 (2), γ = 87.34 (2)° with Z = 1, also has the [Hg3Cl10]4− stoichiometry and the same type of {([HgCl4]2−)2[HgCl2]}n anionic chains that were found in compound (II), but the formal HgCl2 and [HgCl4]2− moieties are more discrete with much weaker contacts linking the individual units. Bifurcated hydrogen bonds with the cations cross-link the anionic chains to form an infinite two-dimensional network. Second forms of the 3- and 4-chloropyridinium salts were also obtained. 3-Chloropyridinium trichloromercurate(II), (IV), (C5H5ClN)[HgCl3], monoclinic, P21/c, a = 7.243 (5), b = 22.145 (8), c = 12.320 (3) Å, β = 99.52 (3)° with Z = 8, has the [HgCl3]− stoichiometry, but the anions are infinite chains composed of distorted [Hg2Cl6]2− moieties. Bifurcated hydrogen bonds from the cations cross-link the anionic chains to form infinite two-dimensional layers. Bis(4-chloropyridinium) hexachlorodimercurate(II), (V), (C5H5ClN)2[Hg2Cl6], monoclinic, C2/m, a = 13.447 (3), b = 7.534 (2), c = 9.939 (2) Å, β = 97.48 (2)° with Z = 2, contains highly symmetrical discrete [Hg2Cl6]2−anions. Bifurcated hydrogen bonds from the cations interconnect the anions to form infinite one-dimensional chains.

Notizen: Summary X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) of the Ni(2 p3/2, 1/2), N(1s) and Cl(2p) core levels for seven nickel(II) tetraaza macrocyclic complexes and three related macrocycles of the basic cyclam and corrin ring structures are reported. Relative satellite intensities for the Ni(2p3/2) level are also reported, where observed. The binding energy data for the core levels are interpreted in terms of structural features of these complexes, such as: (i) the conformation of the macrocyclic ring and the concomitant isomerism possibilities, (ii) the existence of “cluster-ions”, formed as a consequence of hydrogen bonding between macrocyclic cation and counter-ion, and (iii) the coordination number of nickel in these complexes. Additional information of chemical significance, which is derived from the binding energy data, concerns the magnetic properties of the complexes and an estimate of the degree of metal-ligand covalency.

Notizen: Abstract Infrared spectra of K3H(SeO4)2 obtained at 300 and 77 K, conform to the pattern expected for a very strong O-H ⋯ O hydrogen bond. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and electrical conductivity measurements indicate the presence of a phase transition at 388 K to a state having high protonic conductivity.

Notizen: Some lanthanide fluoride (LnF3, Ln = Ce, Nd, Sm) crystals have been grown, and fluoride ion-selective electrodes (F-ISE) have been constructed using these and some commercial LaF3, single crystal membranes. Aspects of crystal growing, particularly the high-temperature dimorphism of SmF3, are addressed, and the effects on the electrode resistance and response characteristics of crystal quality, doping and membrane geometric dimensions are studied. The results show that, while doping is effective in increasing the membrane conductivity, membrane geometric dimensions also affect the electrical resistance substantially. Undoped membranes have noise-free Nernstian response to F- solutions, provided appropriate geometric dimensions are chosen. The crystal orientation of the membrane does not have noticeable effect on the performance. The crystal quality also affects the membrane resistance and performance. Single crystal membranes with minor and localized visual defects show little difference in conductivity and no difference in performance compared with a ‘perfect’ single crystal membrane. Membranes grown from lower grade starting materials do not show poorer performance although these membranes were slightly cloudy. Membranes with severe visual defects have much lower conductivity, and deteriorated performance.

Notizen: A study of the response characteristics of some fluoride selective electrodes based on three lanthanide fluoride single crystal membranes (LnF3; Ln = La, Ce and Nd) is reported. There is little difference between the response of these three membranes in buffered fluoride solutions except that CeF3 shows a slightly faster response and a slightly lower detection limit. The effect of the hydroxide ion on the response to fluoride is examined and is shown to be particularly severe for the CeF3 membrane. It is demonstrated that hydroxide ion interference on these membranes is due to the formation of hydroxo-complexes which form within a gel layer at the membrane surface. A mechanism is proposed for the response of the electrodes to the hydroxide ion.

Notizen: The fluoride ion-selective electrode has been used in continuous flow analysis to determine the fluoride concentration in aqueous solution. The varying electrode potentials, E(t), were collected in the first 60 s by an interfacing computer, and the equilibrium potential of the electrode was predicted using an extrapolation method. This value agrees to within ±0.5 mV of the comparative value obtained by allowing sufficient time for the electrode to reach a steady state. Like flow-injection (FI), continuous flow (CF) analysis with this extrapolation method significantly shortens the time required for routine fluoride concentration measurements, but it also achieves a higher sensitivity than FI. The method has been applied to the determination of fluoride in city tap water.
