Beschreibung: On the basis of aerial photographs of sea ice floes in the marginal ice zone (MIZ) of Prydz Bay acquired from December 2004 to February 2005 during the 21st Chinese National Antarctic Research Expedition, image processing techniques are employed to extract some geometric parameters of floes from two merged transects covering the whole MIZ. Variations of these parameters with the distance into the MIZ are then obtained. Different parameters of floe size, namely area, perimeter, and mean caliper diameter (MCD), follow three similar stages of increasing, flat and increasing again, with distance from the open ocean. Floe shape parameters (roundness and the ratio of perimeter to MCD), however, have less significant variations than that of floe size. Then, to modify the deviation of the cumulative floe size distribution from the ideal power law, an upper truncated power-law function and a Weibull function are used, and four calculated parameters of the above functions are found to be important descriptors of the evolution of floe size distribution in the MIZ. Among them, Lr of the upper truncated power-law function indicates the upper limit of floe size and roughly equals the maximum floe size in each square sample area. L0 in the Weibull distribution shows an increasing proportion of larger floes in squares farther from the open ocean and roughly equals the mean floe size. D in the upper truncated power-law function is closely associated with the degree of confinement during ice breakup. Its decrease with the distance into MIZ indicates the weakening of confinement conditions on floes owing to wave attenuation. The gamma of the Weibull distribution characterizes the degree of homogeneity in a data set. It also decreases with distance into MIZ, implying that floe size distributes increase in range. Finally, a statistical test on floe size is performed to divide the whole MIZ into three distinct zones made up of floes of quite different characteristics. This zonal structure of floe size also agrees well with the trends of floe shape and floe size distribution, and is believed to be a straightforward result of wave-ice interaction in the MIZ.

Notizen: We study a soliton-like distortion in a quasi-one-dimensional conjugated carbon chain with a single side radical, which contains an unpaired electron, by taking into account the electron–phonon interaction, an extended Hubbard term due to on-site electron–electron interactions and intersite e–e interactions, and the ferromagnetic correlation between itinerant π-electrons and the unpaired radical electron. It is shown that a critical value of hopping integral exists between the side radical and the main chain, at which a transition from a single soliton-like distorted structure to a pair of soliton-like distortions occurs along the main chain. In addition, the spin density at the dangling site is transferred to the main chain due to the hopping interaction between the main chain and the side radical, and the spin density at the side radical is decreased to zero when the hopping integral is larger than the critical value. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract We have studied the energy spectra and the electronic states of a soliton in the weakly coupled electron-phonon systems using an extension of SSH model that includes non-nearest neighbor hopping interactions. The results show that: (1) the electron-hole symmetry of the energy band structure implied by SSH model is broken, and the energy gap 2Δ increases. (2) for a negative charged soliton, only two bound states have been found, one of them is the midgap state, another is a new shallow state near the bottom of the conduction band; for a neutral soliton, all three bound states exist as in the SSH model, but their localizations are strengthened; for a positive charged soliton, four bound states have been found, one of which is an additional state near the top of the conduction band.

Notizen: Abstract The gradient diffusion parameterization of the Reynolds stress is modified by adding a bulk momentum transport term. Comparisons to available data indicate that this term accounts for the gusts or ‘downsweeps’ of higher momentum fluid into the canopy and ejections of lower momentum fluid out of the canopy. This term results in realistic mean wind speed profiles.

Notizen: Abstract We have studied the effects of electron-electron interaction on the 2D localized modes of a soliton using the two-dimensional model that includes the bond-bending term and pinning effects in the photoexcited samples. The result shows that seven localized modes always exist, but the frequencies slightly move for different parameter λ and their localization are strengthened.

Notizen: Abstract Starting from the extended SSH model that includes an external Coulomb potential arising from interchain charged solitons and counterions, the intrachain e-e interaction and the next neighbor hopping interactions, eight localized vibrational modes around the soliton lattice have been found for the doping levels from 3.33 at.% to 13.33 at.%. Among them three are infrared active and they can be used to interpret the three observed infrared absorption lines at 487, 1284 and 1362 cm−1. Furthermore, the frequencies of localized modes are decreased and their localizations are weakened when the dopant concentrations increase.
