    Notes: Abstract A radionuclide technique was developed to obtain reproducible measurements of cerebrospinal fluid flow in Rickham-Holter type shunt systems. In attempting to reproduce previously described radionuclide procedures, we found that different flow rate measurements can be obtained simply by chaning the radiotracer injection technique or the method of analysis of the time activity curves which are generated. The importance of these technical pitfalls cannot be over-emphasized, since there is no gold standard to evaluate cerebrospinal fluid flow in vivo. An experimental model with a calibrated Harvard pump and a shunt system filled with normal saline was constructed. Aliquots of 500 μCi of pertechnetate in 0.05 ml of saline were injected serially into the center of the Rickham reservoir using a size 28 needle. Time-activity curves were obtained after waiting five min to reach equilibrium, and standard curves of radiotracer clearance vs actual flow for each system used clinically in our institution were generated. In addition, a technique to quantify and thus correct for the small but significant leak of radiotracer which occurs at the site of injection in the reservoir is described. Excellent correlation was obtained between our results and the clinical and radiological findings in a preliminary clinical evaluation.

    Notes: Abstract A case of bronchobiliary fistula diagnosed by 99mTc-HIDA cholescintigraphy is presented. The fistula caused by a stenosing tumor of the left hepatic duct would probably have been missed without the use of delayed views and body fluids counting which increased the specificity of scintigraphic findings.

    Description: The Builth Inlier of central Wales exposes a highly fossiliferous Middle to Late Ordovician (Darriwilian to basal Sandbian) siliciclastic succession in a volcanic, back-arc basin setting. Articulated echinoderm faunas are preserved in a range of paleoenvironments, together with widespread, dissociated ossicles. These have enabled a reconstruction of the distributions of echinoderm groups across a range of noncarbonate facies. The oldest echinoderm assemblages are from sandstone and siltstone deposits, and have yielded only the crinoid Iocrinus pauli and rare asteroids. The most diverse echinoderm assemblages are from a nearshore siliciclastic facies at Llandegley Rocks and equivalent sites. These are dominated by crinoids, together with rare asteroids, caryocystitid rhombiferans, echinozoans, and possible mitrate stylophorans. Deeper-water environments were dominated by the mitrate stylophoran Anatifopsis , associated with variable numbers of holothurians, cornutes, solutans, and rare cystoids (rhombiferans and undetermined blastozoans). The ecological distribution of echinoderms in the area can be summarized as follows: (1) high-diversity faunas in the shallowest environments, composed primarily of large crinoids, with asterozoans and other groups; (2) low-diversity faunas in intermediate water depths, with crinoids (one species) and asterozoans; (3) moderately diverse faunas in deep-water communities with generally small taxa, dominated by stylophorans. These results agree with previous interpretations of environmental preferences among the different groups of echinoderms, but also indicate a separation of dominantly Cambrian-type classes in offshore sediments and Ordovician-type taxa in shallow water. Based on assessments of functional morphology and previously published data, the environmental distributions of these taxa are likely to have been controlled by a complex of factors including sediment type, flow regime, nutrient availability, and temperature. Shallow-water siliciclastic settings may have been crucial environments for echinoderm diversification during the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event.

    Description: Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacter cloacae complex isolates submitted to a reference laboratory from 2010 to 2015 were screened by PCR for seven common carbapenemase gene groups, namely, KPC, NDM, OXA-48, VIM, IMP, GES, and NMC-A/IMI. Nineteen of the submitted isolates (1.7%) were found to harbor Ambler class A bla NMC-A or bla IMI -type carbapenemases. All 19 isolates were resistant to at least one carbapenem but susceptible to aminoglycosides, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, tigecycline, and ciprofloxacin. Most isolates (17/19) gave positive results with the Carba-NP test for phenotypic carbapenemase detection. Isolates were genetically diverse by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis macrorestriction analysis, multilocus sequence typing, and hsp60 gene analysis. The genes were found in various Enterobacter cloacae complex species; however, bla NMC-A was highly associated with Enterobacter ludwigii . Whole-genome sequencing and bioinformatics analysis revealed that all NMC-A ( n = 10), IMI-1 ( n = 5), and IMI-9 ( n = 2) producers harbored the carbapenemase gene on EludIMEX-1-like integrative mobile elements (EcloIMEXs) located in the identical chromosomal locus. Two novel genes, bla IMI-5 and bla IMI-6 , were harbored on different IncFII-type plasmids. Enterobacter cloacae complex isolates harboring bla NMC-A/IMI -type carbapenemases are relatively rare in Canada. Though mostly found integrated into the chromosome, some variants are located on plasmids that may enhance their mobility potential.

    Description: The primitive blastozoan Felbabkacystis luckae n. gen. n. sp. is described from the Drumian Jince Formation, Barrandian area (Czech Republic) from eleven fairly well-preserved specimens. Its unique body plan organization is composed of a relatively long, stalk-like imbricate structure directly connected to the aboral imbricate cup of the test and of an adoral vaulted tessellate test supporting the ambulacral and brachiolar systems. Its bipartite test, called prototheca, highlights the evolution of the body wall among blastozoans. Felbabkacystis n. gen. shows the combination of plesiomorphic (imbricate stalk-like appendage) and derived features (highly domed peristome, elongate epispires). The new genus is interpreted as a transitional form between calyx-bearing and theca-bearing blastozoans, and is attributed to the new family Felbabkacystidae. The lithology, the associated fauna, and the possession of a long stalk suggest that Felbabkacystis was probably a low-level suspension feeder living in relatively deep settings.

    Description: Moroccodiscus smithi represents a new cyclocystoid genus and species based on moldic specimens from the Middle Ordovician Taddrist Formation (Darriwilian) of SE Morocco. This represents the earliest articulated member of the Cyclocystoidea and is the first complete cyclocystoid described from the Ordovician of Gondwana, as well as the first cyclocystoid ever recorded from Africa. The anatomy and morphology of this new species were studied using a combination of conventional paleontological methods and nondestructive X-ray computed tomography. Because Moroccodiscus differs from other cyclocystoids, in particular by lacking cupules attached to the marginal ossicles, it is assigned to the new family Moroccodiscidae. This new taxon illustrates the relatively poorly known early diversification of these enigmatic extinct echinoderms and sheds light on the mode of life of cyclocystoids, including injuries to plate circlets during early ontogeny and folding of these disk-like specimens at the time of death. The overall thecal shape was very similar in cyclocystoids and many domal edrioasteroids, probably because they were both sessile or attached, benthic, suspension feeders. However, many oral surface, ambulacral, and marginal ring features had become very different, indicating that these two groups had either converged because of similar life modes or were only distantly related sister groups.

    Description: The genus Rhopalocystis (Eocrinoidea, Blastozoa) is characterized by both a short stratigraphic range (Fezouata Shale, middle Tremadocian to middle Floian, Lower Ordovician) and a reduced geographic extension (Agdz-Zagora area, central Anti-Atlas, Morocco). Since the original description of its type species ( R. destombesi Ubaghs, 1963), three successive revisions of the genus Rhopalocystis have led to the erection of nine additional species. The morphological disparity within this genus is here critically reassessed on the basis of both historical material and new recently collected samples. The detailed examination of all specimens, coupled with morphometric and cladistic analyses, points toward a relatively strong support for five morphotypes. A systematic revision of Rhopalocystis is thus suggested, with only five valid taxa: R. destombesi, R. fraga Chauvel, 1971 , R. grandis Chauvel, 1971 , R. havliceki Chauvel, 1978, and R. zagoraensis Chauvel, 1971. The five others are considered as junior synonyms ( R. dehirensis Chauvel and Régnault, 1986, R. lehmani Chauvel and Régnault, 1986, R . sp. A, R . sp. B, and R . sp. C).
