Description: The influence of the exceptionally strong typhoon Mangkhut on the availability of nutrients and changes in primary production were studied in the northern South China Sea in September 2018. A tight station grid was sampled to analyze major nutrients, chlorophyll_a, particulate and dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen. Based on interpolated profiles, nutrients and organic matter budgets were determined for the upper 100 m of the water column prior to and after Mangkhut's passage. An upper layer of 100 m was found to reflect the important changes by the typhoon. Considerable differences between the on‐shelf, shelf edge and the deep‐sea stations were determined. Nitrate and phosphate increased by about 80% and 36% on the shelf, respectively, and both by almost 40% at the shelf edge. The open deep‐sea part of the study area reflects some deviating results that may be caused by just displacement of water or by mixing water of different origin. However, right on Mangkhut's track on the shelf even contact between surface waters and bottom waters was enabled, increasing phosphate and silicate, but declining nitrate. The inventory of organic carbon of the upper 100 m of the study area (138,000 km2) of 92 Gmol had increased within a few days after the typhoon's passage by 5 Gmol on the shelf and about 2 Gmol in the shelf edge area. Chlorophyll_a doubled during our stay and might have reached a factor of 3 increase in the subsequent time by nitrate supply and excess phosphate.
Description: Plain Language Summary: The influence of the super typhoon Mangkhut on the waters of the northern South China Sea was studied in September 2018. Nutrients and organic material were measured on 63 stations from the Chinese research vessel HAI YANG DI ZHI SHI HAO. Amounts of nutrients and biogenic matter were calculated for the on‐shelf, shelf edge and deep‐sea stations for the pre‐ and post‐Mangkhut period. An important finding was that the stations of the different areas, on‐shelf, shelf edge and the deep‐sea appeared to be differently impacted by Mangkhut. Even differences between the stations right on its track and in the other parts of the study area were found. In general, nutrients were supplied in enormous amounts and caused immediate algae growth. Moreover, enough nutrients were supplied to support algae growth for a couple of weeks. In summary, it was found that Manghut's upper water column mixing and shifting caused an almost tripling of primary production compared to the normal situation.
Description: Key Points: The typhoon Mangkhut clearly impacted the water column differently on the continental shelf, at the shelf edge and in the deep sea. On Mangkhut's track a maximum nitrate supply of 162 mmol m−2 was caused by induced upwelling at the shelf edge. The chlorophyll inventory of 2.8 Gg was almost tripled by contributing 4.7 Gg estimated from an additional nutrient supply.

Description: ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The article summarizes the hydrographic-hydrochemical conditions in the western and central Baltic Sea in 2017. Based on meteorological conditions, the horizontal and vertical distribution of temperature, salinity, oxygen/hydrogen sulphide and nutrients are described on a seasonal scale. For the southern Baltic Sea area, the “cold sum” of the air temperature of 31.7 Kd in Warnemünde amounted to a mild winter in 2014/15 and ranks as 15th warmest winter since the beginning of the record in 1948. The summer “heat sum” of 159.5 Kd ranks on 28th position of the warmest summers over the past 70 years and is slightly above the long-term average of 153.4 Kd. Based on satellite derived Sea Surface Temperature (SST) 2017 was the eleventh-warmest year since 1990 and with 0.24 K slightly above the long-term SST average. March, April and October - December contributed to the average by their positive anomalies. July and August were characterized by negative anomalies. The anomalies reached maximum values of +2 K and -3 K. The situation in the deep basins of the Baltic Sea was mainly coined by beginning stagnation at bottom-near water depths of the eastern Gotland Basin and ongoing ventilation of the upper part 5 of the deep-water above 150 m as a consequence of weak inflows. For the first time within this phase of intensified inflow activity, starting in 2014, the ventilation of the Farö Deep at the Northern Central Basin was registered at the beginning of the year. In the course of 2017 two weak inflows showing total volumes of 210 km^³ (February) and 188 km^³ (October) were registered. In conclusion, the impact of the observed phase of intensified water exchange processes with subsequent consequences for the biogeochemical cycles is weakening.GERMAN ABSTRACT: Die Arbeit beschreibt die hydrographisch-hydrochemischen Bedingungen in der westlichen und zentralen Ostsee für das Jahr 2017.

Description: Long-term observations of the deep ocean particle flux from three sites in the northeast Atlantic (33 degrees N, 22 degrees W; 47 degrees N, 20 degrees W; 54 degrees N, 20 degrees W) provide the basis for comparison and characterization of the biogeochemical provinces in terms of sedimentation pattern. Deep ocean particle flux data (2000 in) for fluxes of total mass and the flux composition are presented and compared to published sediment trap data from this area to consider regional-scale variations in the quantity and composition of settling material. The observations show that in the northeast Atlantic gradient of decreasing mass flux from North to South, exists consistent with known changes of biological productivity in surface waters. This gradient is associated with similar trends in opal and particulate organic carbon, whereas calcium carbonate shows trend in the opposite direction. The changes in the composition of the settling material found along the transect are indicating that the calcium carbonate flux is critical in removing organic matter from the upper ocean to the deeper sink. Its role declines from the subtropical ocean (60-80% of the particle flux) towards North (〈 40%) reflecting the decreasing importance of coccolithophorid/foraminiferal blooms for particle flux from the subtropical to the subpolar North Atlantic. In contrast, the role of biogenic silica (opal) in regard to the ballasting effect increases towards North. The northern sites have much higher percentage of biogenic silica than the sites in the South, because of the deep winter mixing and the seasonality of phytoplankton dominated by diatom blooms during spring and summer. The comparison of the seasonal pattern of particle flux with the seasonal pattern of surface chlorophyll a concentrations from SeaWiFS together with the similarity of the pattern observed in calcium carbonate and opal leads to the conclusion that the particle flux at two positions (33 degrees N, 22 degrees W; 47 degrees N, 20 degrees W) is fast and directly coupled to the phytoplankton dynamics in the overlying euphotic zone.

Description: Particle flux data from 27 sites in the Atlantic Ocean have been compiled in order to determine regional variations in the strength and efficiency of the biological pump and to quantify carbon fluxes over the ocean basin, thus estimating the potential oceanic sequestration of atmospheric CO2. An algorithm is derived relating annual particulate organic carbon (POC) flux to primary production and depth that yields variations in the export ratio (ER = POC flux/primary production) at 125 m of between 0.08 and 0.38 over the range of production from 50 to 400 g C m−2 yr−1. Significant regional differences in changes of the export ratio with depth are related to the temporal stability of flux. Sites with more pulsed export have higher export ratios at 125 m but show more rapid decreases of POC flux with depth, resulting in little geographic variation in fluxes below ∼3000 m. The opposing effects of organic carbon production and calcification on ΔpCO2 of surface seawater are considered to calculate an “effective carbon flux” at the depth of the euphotic zone and at the base of the winter mixed layer. POC flux at the base of the euphotic zone integrated over the Atlantic Ocean between 65°N and 65°S amounts to 3.14 Gt C yr−1. Of this, 5.7% is remineralized above the winter mixed layer and thus does not contribute to CO2 sequestration on climatically relevant timescales. The effective carbon flux, termed Jeff, amounts to 2.47 Gt C yr−1 and is a measure of the potential sequestration of atmospheric CO2 for the area considered. A shift in the composition of sedimenting particles (seen in a decrease of the opal:carbonate ratio) is seen across the entire North Atlantic, indicating a basin-wide phenomenon that may be related to large-scale changes in climatic forcing.

Description: Bottom-tethered sediment traps deployed in the deep eastern North Atlantic between 54°N 20°W and 33°N 20°W (L1, L2, L3), at the European continental margin at 49°N (OMEX) and off the Canary Islands (ESTOC) were investigated for the determination of 230Th trapping efficiencies. The ratios of 230Th flux measured in the traps (Fa) to the expected 230Th flux from the production rate of 230Th in the overlying water column (Fp) ranged between 0.09 and 1.26. For the traps with deployment periods 〉300 days the interannual variation of Fa/Fp ratios (different years but same location and water depth) were up to 10%, suggesting that the average 230Th flux to the sediment traps did not vary significantly. The influence of lateral advection on the 230Th flux was taken into account either by applying a mass balance of 230Th and 231Pa or by assuming a constant removal rate of 230Th from the water column, an assumption based on similar 230Th concentration-depth profiles observed at most locations investigated. 230Th trapping efficiencies were between 9 and 143%, showing a trend of increasing efficiencies with increasing water depth. No relation was found between current velocities and 230Th trapping efficiencies. Our investigations suggest that the observation of constant or even increasing particle flux rates with increasing water depths in several sediment trap arrays investigated may be a result of sediment trap biases. The correction for the trapping biases is important for the understanding of the regional differences in the particle flux in the eastern North Atlantic.

Description: During Polarstern cruise ANT-XXV/5 in April/May 2009, the marine atmosphere was sampled via PTFE (Polytetrafluorethylen) tubing extending from the front of the upper deck to labs on the main deck of r/v Polarstern and then analyzed for elemental mercury in air (Hg0-air) using the same Tekran 2537A as for Hg0-water measurements. The time interval of Hg0-air measurements was 5-min with gaps of about 20 min each hour because of intermittent Hg0-water measurements. The data were checked for potential contamination during tailwind situations (relative wind speed and direction) and doubtful values were removed. The detection limit was 0.1 ng L-1 (on ANT-XXV/5: 5 times the Hg0-air values were below the detection limit).
