Notizen: Abstract We present a relation between the Bessel potential spaces and the Riesz potential spaces. The ideas of the proof are to characterize each potential spaces and to give a correspondence between individual Bessel potentials and Riesz potentials.

Notizen: Summary The authors have attempted to establish a practical technique for recording human and animal spinal cord action potentials evoked by epidural electrical stimulation and to correlate the findings with both clinically occurring and experimentally produced spinal cord lesions. Examples of the clinical and per-operative applications of the technique are described.

Notizen: Summary Experimentally produced rapid and slowly progressive compression of the cervical spinal cord in cats demonstrated two very different patterns of damage, with disturbance of nerve cells and microvasculature. The spinal cord suffered less damage even from more severe pressure if this was applied slowly. The histological and microangiographic results provide confirmation of phenomena observed clinically.

Notizen: Summary This paper reports on Mietens' syndrome which is characterized by mental retardation, growth failure, flexion contracture of the elbows, dislocation of the radius, abnormally short ulna and radius, bilateral corneal opacity, horizontal and rotational nystagmus, strabismus and a small pointed nose with depressed root. This is the second report on the Mietens' syndrome.

Notizen: Abstract Insulin has been shown to stimulate bone formation, and there is a high incidence of obesity and disturbance in the glucose metabolism of patients with paravertebral ligamentous ossification (PVLO). In an effort to clarify whether there is any alteration in insulin status in PVLO patients, and whether such changes play any role in the development of PVLO, glucose metabolism and serum insulin levels are examined in 11 PVLO patients and compared with 6 control patients of similar age and activities of daily living. More than half of the patients with PVLO exceed 110% of ideal body weight, and their fasting serum immunoreactive insulin (IRI) levels are significantly higher than those of control patients. In addition, there is a significant correlation between fasting IRI and % ideal body weight in PVLO patients. These results indicate that hyperinsulinism is present in many patients with PVLO, and that obesity further aggravates the hyperinsulinism in this disorder. Thus, it is suggested that hyperinsulinism is involved in the development or aggravation of ectopic ossification in PVLO patients. The relationship between hyperinsulinism and the other factors such as genetic and physical factors as well as the changes in calcium metabolism in the development of PVLO remains to be clarified.

Notizen: Involvement of tyrosine phosphorylation in osteoclastic bone resorption was examined using osteoclast-like multinucleated cells prepared from co-cultures of mouse osteoblastic cells and bone marrow cells in the presence of 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3. When osteoclast-like cells were plated on culture dishes in the presence of 10% fetal bovine serum, they were sharply stained in their peripheral region by anti-phosphotyrosine antibody. Western blot analysis revealed that 115-to 130-kD proteins were tyrosine-phosphorylated in osteoclast-like cells. Using immunoprecipitation and immunoblotting, one of the proteins with 115-130 kD was identified as focal adhesion kinase (p125FAK), a tyrosine kinase, which is localized in focal adhesions. Immunostaining with anti-p 125FAK antibody revealed that p125FAK was mainly localized at the periphery of osteoclast-like cells. Herbimycin A, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, not only suppressed tyrosine phosphorylation of p125FAK but also changed the intracellular localization of p125FAK and disrupted a ringed structure of F-actin-containing podosomes in osteoclast-like cells. Antisense oligodeoxynucleotides to p125FAK inhibited dentine resorption by osteoclast-like cells, whereas sense oligodeoxynucleotides did not. These results suggest that p125FAK is involved in osteoclastic bone resorption and that tyrosine phosphorylation of p125FAK is critical for regulating osteoclast function.
