Notes: The feeding strategy of dab Limanda limanda was investigated within a predefined research area in the southern North Sea for 2 years. The aims were: 1) to establish the relationship between prey availability and dab abundance, distribution, body condition and prey selection, and 2) to determine the underlying functional processes of prey choice in dab. Temporal and spatial trends of prey availability in relation to dab abundances, distribution, condition and prey selection were analysed. Temporal trends in dab condition, percentage of empty stomachs and numbers of ingested prey were apparent. In particular in the winter period 2000–2001 dab were in poor condition and prey items were only rarely found in stomachs. Similarly prey availability decreased in the environment while the abundance of dab increased. Thus, temporal changes in the nutritive state were partly thought to be attributed to density-dependent effects. The stomach composition of dab during the two consecutive summers was mainly dominated by Pariambus typicus and Ophiura albida while in the winter period only O. albida made a significant contribution to the stomach content. Analysis of prey characteristics indicated that only prey densities in the environment significantly influenced prey choice in dab, while other characteristics such as the position of the prey in the habitat, its palatability or mobility did not have significant effects. The feeding strategy of dab thus was highly opportunistic, although trends were apparent that suggested that buried living fauna was less likely to be ingested, which was also observed in previous studies.

Notes: Summary In the Wadden Sea, in total, 93 species of macrofaunal benthic invertebrates are threatened in at least one subregion. Of these, 72 species are threatened in the entire area and are therefore placed on the trilateral Red List. 7 species are (probably) extinct in the entire Wadden Sea area. The status of 9 species of macrofaunal invertebrates is critical, 13 species are (probably) endangered, the status of 25 species is (probably) vulnerable and of 17 species (probably) susceptible.

Notes: Abstract This paper is a review of the present state of knowledge about the ecology of the Dogger Bank, a shallow area in the central southern North Sea. The biological situation in this region is different from other regions in the North Sea; phytoplankton production occurs throughout the year, connected with low periodicity in macrofaunal abundance and condition of fish. Against prevailing opinions, the Dogger Bank, an offshore region, seems to be affected by eutrophication and pollution.

Notes: Abstract As part of an interdisciplinary research programme, lead contents were measured in the polychaeteNephtys spp. and in the sea-urchinEchinocardium cordatum as well as in the respective sediment fractions 〈20 μm taken from the Dogger Bank proper and the eastern coastal North Sea. A lower lead content was generally observed in the organisms taken from the German Bight than in those from the Dogger Bank, especially from its northeastern part. It is possible to divide both areas according to the slope found in the linear regression of lead versus total organic carbon contents in sediments, which is twice as steep for the Dogger Bank as for the eastern North Sea. This criterium points to a difference in sediment quality with regard to toxic metal contamination. The sediment quality of the Dogger Bank seems to be twice as bad compared with that of the eastern North Sea. This is in good agreement with the differences found in lead contamination of the sediment-dwelling polychaetes from both areas. The results indicate that lead is primarily accumulated by food ingestion.

Notes: Abstract Macrofaunal communities of the western Eurasian Arctic Ocean were studied along a transect from the North Pole, across the Amundsen Basin and Gakkel Ridge towards the Morris Jesup Rise and the Yermak Plateau. Samples were collected during autumn 1991, from depths of 560–4411 m, using a box corer. Macrofaunal species numbers varied from 1 to 11 per 0.02 m2 in the basins approaching the Morris Jesup Rise and from 44 to 81 per 0.25 m2 at the Yermak Plateau. Abundances increased from 1 to 31 per 0.02 m2 in the basin and on the Morris Jesup Rise to 24–60 per 0.02 m2 on the Yermak Plateau. Biomass was low in the basin and at the Morris Jesup Rise (0.5–68.9 mg per 0.02 m2) but increased to 116.64 mg per 0.02 m2 at the Yermak Plateau. A total of 108 taxa were recorded. The results contradict the hypothesis that diversity decreases with increasing latitude, and the high species richness at low abundance at intermediate depths was comparable with that observed in Antarctic and tropical regions.

Description: This paper is chapter 5.2 of the ICES CRR “Structure and dynamics of the North Sea benthos” (ICES 2007) compiled by the ICES Study Group on the North Sea Benthos Project 2000. The North Sea Benthos Project 2000 (NSBP) was initiated as a follow-up to the earlier 1986 ICES North Sea Benthos Survey (NSBS). One major aim of the NSBP 2000 was to compare the outcome with that of the 1986 NSBS, in order to identify any significant changes in the community structure and their likely causes. In general, the spatial distribution of the macrofaunal communities in 2000 was rather similar to that in 1986. But changes were found within communities which were addressed to changes in the hydroclimate caused by changes in the North Atlantic Oscillation influencing changes in currents and sediment structure as well as food availability.

Description: Coastal German waters contain about 1.6 million tons of dumped munition, mostly left after World Wars. This study investigated the benthic macrofauna around the 'Kolberger Heide' munition dumpsite (Baltic Sea). A total of 93 macrofauna grab samples were obtained in the proximity of the munition dumpsite and in reference areas. Environmental variables analysed included the latitude/longitude, depth, terrain ruggedness, sediment grainsize distribution, TNT concentration in the bottom water and distance to the centre of munition dumpsite. The overall abundance, biomass and diversity varied among these groups, though demonstrated no clear differences regarding the proximity to munition and modelled near-bottom dissolved TNT. Among individual taxa, however, a total of 16 species demonstrated significant correlation with TNT concentration. Moreover, TNT may serve as a predictor for the distribution of three species: molluscs Retusa truncatula, Varicorbula gibba and polychaete Spio goniocephala. Possible reasons for the species distribution including their biological traits are discussed.

Description: The state and development of coastal marine systems and an understanding of the interaction of organisms, sea floor, water column, and biochemical and physical processes can only be obtained by a combination of long-term monitoring and modelling approaches of different complexity. A need for the development and evaluation of monitoring strategies is driven by a framework of different European and German regulations. The research project WIMO (Scientific Monitoring Concepts for the German Bight) has developed concepts and methods that aim at a fundamental scientific understanding of marine systems and also meet monitoring requirements of European legislation and regulations like the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive. In this final report examples of common descriptors of ecosystem state like seabed integrity, eutrophication, and biodiversity are discussed. It has been assessed to what extent established measuring procedures used to survey the characteristics of the sea floor, and newly developed technologies are eligible for governmental monitoring. The significance of integrative modelling for linking and visualising results of measurements and models is illustrated. It is shown how new concepts have been implemented into governmental monitoring in the form of web based data sheets. These insights enable continuous analyses and developments in the future.
