Notes: Summary Two new species of the genus Heterokrohnia, H. longidentata and H. fragilis, are described and compared with the other three known Heterokrohnia species, H. mirabilis Ritter-Záhony 1911; H. bathybia Marumo and Kitou 1966 and H. involucrum Dawson 1968. The species have been found at great depths (1,000 m–2,000 m) near Elephant Island, north of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Notes: Summary A new bathypelagic species of the genus Heterokrohnia, H. longicaudata, is described and separated from the other five previously described Heterokrohnia species, H. mirabilis Ritter-Záhony 1911, H. bathybia Marumo and Kitou 1966, H. involucrum Dawson 1968, H. longidentata Kapp and Hagen 1985 and H. fragilis Kapp and Hagen 1985. The new specimen has been found at great depths (2,350m–1,000m) near Elephant Island, in the atlantic sector north of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Notes: Abstract The different secretions of the mouth, the vestibular organs, and the vestibular pits of chaetognaths are shown on scanning electron micrographs of the head ofSagitta setosa. The secreting organs are described and the functions of the secretions are discussed. In addition, the secretion under the praeputium, a pit between the two rows of anterior teeth, and the surface structure of the teeth are described.

Notes: Abstract Chaetognaths mainly keep to a preferred depth range by movement and resistance achieved by body shape. Some species, for exampleSagitta lyra andS. hexaptera, developed conspicuous, voluminous, gelatinous inner parts in the lateral fins. These are considered an aid toward buoyancy, as they compensate the increasing density caused by maturing gonads. Probably, the small size of the sexual organs ofS. enflata can also be regarded as a buoyancy adaptation.

Notes: Abstract The genusHeterokrohnia Ritter-Záhony, 1911 is redefined and the speciesH. mirabilis Ritter-Záhony, 1911 redescribed. The redescription is based upon the type specimens from Antarctic waters and additional specimens from Atlantic and Arctic waters. The species is compared to others of the genus. Furthermore, the identity of certain specimens reported asH. mirabilis is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The characters which have been advanced to separateArcheterokrohnia Casanova, 1986, fromHeterokrohnia Ritter-Záhony, 1911, are discussed; they are considered to be insufficient to warrant the erection of a separate genus. A further argument against the separate status ofArcheterokrohnia is the greater similarity ofArcheterokrohnia rubra Casanova, 1986, toHeterokrohnia longicaudata Hagen & Kapp, 1986, than toA. palpifera Casanova, 1986. Various reasons are given for the retention ofH. longicaudata inHeterokrohnia and against its transfer toArcheterokrohnia. The 13 species recognized and assigned toHeterokrohnia are reviewed; all characters used are tabulated and all species figured.
