    Notes: Abstract. This revision of the classification of unicellular eukaryotes updates that of Levine et al. (1980) for the protozoa and expands it to include other protists. Whereas the previous revision was primarily to incorporate the results of ultrastructural studies, this revision incorporates results from both ultrastructural research since 1980 and molecular phylogenetic studies. We propose a scheme that is based on nameless ranked systematics. The vocabulary of the taxonomy is updated, particularly to clarify the naming of groups that have been repositioned. We recognize six clusters of eukaryotes that may represent the basic groupings similar to traditional “kingdoms.” The multicellular lineages emerged from within monophyletic protist lineages: animals and fungi from Opisthokonta, plants from Archaeplastida, and brown algae from Stramenopiles.

    Notes: . Mitosis and cytokinesis in Katablepharis ovalis, a colorless flagellate, was investigated. Two new flagella are produced prior to prophase, resulting in a motile quadriflagellate cell during mitosis. the inner array of microtubules of the feeding apparatus disappears before prophase begins. the nuclear envelope disperses during prophase, apparently being converted into rough endoplasmic reticulum. the chromatin condenses and the nucleolus disperses with spindle microtubules appearing oriented perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the cell. At metaphase, the chromatin is condensed as a single disc-shaped mass and rough endoplasmic reticulum flanks the chromatin mass on each side. Groups of spindle microtubules pass through tunnels in the rough endoplasmic reticulum and through electron-translucent areas of the chromatin. the spindle microtubules end at a number of minipoles in the cytoplasm. Vesicles, ribosomes, mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum migrate among the spindle microtubules. There is no polar body or any electrondense area associated with the spindle poles. the basal bodies of the flagella remain attached to the axonemes and do not participate in mitosis. In anaphase, the chromatin separates and migrates to the poles. During telophase, the nuclear envelope reforms from the rough endoplasmic reticulum and the nucleoli reappear. the spindle microtubules are persistent during telophase. Cytokinesis occurs by longitudinal fission, starting at the anterior end and progressing posteriorly. Cytokinesis may be driven by elongation of the spindle microtubules since there is no visible structure associated with the furrowing.

    Notes: Ultrastructural evidence indicates that bacteria are routinely incorporated into the Cells Chroomonas Pochmanni. This strain has a specialized vacuole for capturing bacteria and retaining them in this vacuole. Bacteria appear to be drawn into the vacuole through a small opening which becomes occluded by membranes, completely enclosing the Bacteria. On rare occasions, ohter membrane components and intact ejectisomes also become incorporated into this vacuole. Bacteria-like remnants in small vesicles, in other locations in the cell, suggest that bacteria are digested in these vesicles.

    Notes: Summary Photodormant lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) seeds were incubated in mannitol to prevent germination. Under these conditions, red light induced an extensive degradation of protein and a moderate one of lipid in the cortical cells of the radicle 24 h after treatment. It is suggested that the previously reported phytochrome-caused lowering of the water potential in light-treated embryos, which enables these embryos to overcome the resistance of the surrounding layers of the seed, is caused by lowering of the osmotic potential due to degradation of storage compounds in the radicle.

    Notes: Summary Lobocolax deformans Howe was found to be a bacterial gall onPrionitis lanceolata. Rodshaped bacteria were distributed throughout the gall in intercellular locations. Algal cells in the gall area exhibited numerous proplastids and irregular cell walls. Bacterial cells were also found in galls located onPolyneuropsis stolonifera (gen. et sp. nov.). These elongated and sometimes branched bacteria occur primarily in the outer areas of the gall. As inLobocolax the cells contained numerous proplastids, however, a large increase in the amount of ER was also noted.
