Description: The Climatological Database for the Worlds Oceans: 17501854 (CLIWOC) project, which concluded in 2004, abstracted more than 280,000 daily weather observations from ships logbooks from British, Dutch, French, and Spanish naval vessels engaged in imperial business in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. These data, now compiled into a database, provide valuable information for the reconstruction of oceanic wind field patterns for this key period that precedes the time in which anthropogenic influences on climate became evident. These reconstructions, in turn, provide evidence for such phenomena as the El NiñoSouthern Oscillation and the North Atlantic Oscillation. Of equal importance is the finding that the CLIWOC databasethe first coordinated attempt to harness the scientific potential of this resource [García-Herrera et al., 2005]represents less than 10 percent of the volume of data currently known to reside in this important but hitherto neglected source.

Notes: Primary immunization with a single inoculum of either micelles or iscoms containing influenza A virus glycoproteins failed to induce either B or cytotoxic T (Tc) cell responses. In contrast, immunization with two inocula of iscoms, but not micelles, resulted in the appearance of influenza virus-specific antibody-secreting cells (ASC) but not Tc cells in the lung. There was a 10-fold increase in Tc cell precursor frequency and an increase in ASC generated by secondary in vitro stimulation of lung cell cultures obtained from mice primed with iscoms but not micelles. In mice primed with infectious virus, secondary immunization with either micelles or iscoms increased the number of ASC in the lung and elicited virus-specific Tc cell responses. In contrast homologous virus challenge failed to induce detectable secondary B or Tc cell responses.

Notes: The Mersey Estuary has suffered a legacy of abuse and neglect since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. The discharge of effluents from manufacturing processes, together with wastewater from the burgeoning centres of population, resulted in the estuary gaining the unenviable reputation of being one of the most polluted rivers in Europe. As a result of the long-awaited remedial action which has been implemented over the last fifteen years, there is now unequivocal evidence that the water quality of the river and the biology of the system have improved significantly and will continue to do so as further planned alleviation schemes are completed. This paper reviews the achievements which have been made at the half-way stage in the 25-year multi-billion pound ‘clean-up’campaign.

Notes: A permanent pasture was ploughed, 5 rates of potassium were incorporated in the seed-bed and a timothy/white-clover seed mixture was sown direct without a companion crop. Plant counts were taken during the fourth week of establishment. The highest rate of potash increased the size and number of timothy/white-clover plants considerably, without altering the timothy/white-clover ratio. Half the plots were cut once during the seeding year and the other half twice. Increasing rates of K increased dry-matter yields, particularly on the plots cut 7 weeks after sowing. Botanical analysis in the following year showed that, under both cutting systems, increasing rates of K tended to increase the proportion of white clover and decrease that of unsown species.

Notes: Two experiments were established to compare the effect on the yield of continuously cut herbage of varying amounts of potassium fertilizer applied either in one large dose to the seedbed, or as 3 equal dressings applied to the seedbed and in the summer of the 2 following years. Responses in dry–matter yield were recorded up to the higher rates of potassium fertilizer applied. Establishment and yield in the first 12 months were improved by seedbed applications of up to 4 cwt/ac of muriate of potash (60% K2O). Although total yields over the whole period were similar, whether the potassium was applied to the seedbed only or in annual dressings, yields from “all–in–seedbed” dressings declined towards the end of the period. Soil analysis indicated that annual dressings left behind higher residues of K.

Notes: [Auszug] To minimize the effect of differing altitude and Aspect, temperatures were calculated as anomalies from a reference period with good data coverage. For the Northern Hemisphere the reference period 1946-60 was used and for the Antarctic it was 1957-75. Before 1957 there were not enough recording ...

Notes: [Auszug] Although much has been published on the climatic effects of increasing CO2, few studies have considered the impact on water resources. Revelle and Waggoner3 used empirical relationships to study the effect on water supplies in the western United States of a 10% reduction in precipitation and a 2 C ...

Notes: [Auszug] Recent homogenized near-surface temperature data over the land and oceans of both hemispheres during the past 130 years are combined to produce the first comprehensive estimates of global mean temperature. The results show little trend in the nineteenth century, marked warming to 1940, relatively ...
