    Description: We present a revised 87Sr/86Sr-curve for marine-Sr in the interval 2.5-4.5 Ma using analysis of Orbulina universa from the Middle Pliocene type section in Sicily (Punta Piccola section) and a mixed assemblage of planktonic foraminifera from ODP Site 758A and B. The new calibration is used, together with new 87Sr/86Sr analysis of pectenid calcite from Cockburn Island, Antarctica, to confirm an age of 4.7 Ma for the pectenids of the Cockburn Island Formation (formerly the Pecten Conglomerate), a unit important in marking a period of warmth and possible glacial retreat in Antarctica. Finally, to aid interlaboratory comparison of 87Sr/86Sr data, we calibrate a value of 0.709174 for EN-1 against a value of NIST 987 of 0.709248.

    Description: The calcareous nannofossil assemblages recovered from Site 677A range in age from latest Miocene (NN11) to latest Pleistocene. The consistently high sediment-accumulation rate (mean of 48 m/m.y.) coupled with little dissolution of carbonate has ensured that generally rich, well-preserved coccolith assemblages occur at this site. Exceptions are the Pliocene/Pleistocene boundary sediments, which show evidence of dissolution, and upper Miocene basement sediments, which show evidence of diagenetic overgrowths. The apparent paradox of the occurrence of large numbers of the cool-water species Coccolithus pelagicus together with subtropical and tropical nannofossil species is thought to represent increased seasonality in the degree of upwelling in the Panama Basin. Seasonal upwelling was particularly intense during the late Miocene, when common C. pelagicus occurred with Thalassionema diatoms. Populations of C. pelagicus probably bloomed during a winter period of upwelling that was associated with a shallow thermocline and depressed surface-water temperatures.

    Description: Forty-three core-catcher samples from the upper Miocene to uppermost Pleistocene of ODP Site 677 were examined for planktonic foraminifers. Range charts were compiled for Holes 677A and 677B, and zonal markers and datum planes are correlated with the most recently published time scale. The absence of key species such as Globorotalia truncatulinoides, Globorotalia tosaensis, Globorotalia miocenica, and Globorotalia margaritae prohibits the use of any of the standard tropical zonal schemes. The zonal scheme used here was devised for this area on DSDP Leg 9.
