    Beschreibung: Gaining reliable estimates of how long fish early life stages can survive without feeding and how starvation rate and time until death are influenced by body size, temperature and species is critical to understanding processes controlling mortality in the sea. The present study is an across-species analysis of starvation-induced changes in biochemical condition in early life stages of ninemarine and freshwater fishes. Datawere compiled on changes in body size (dry weight, DW) and biochemical condition (standardized RNA–DNA ratio, sRD) throughout the course of starvation of yolk-sac and feeding larvae and juveniles in the laboratory. In all cases, themean biochemical condition of groups decreased exponentially with starvation time, regardless of initial condition and endogenous yolk reserves. A starvation rate for individuals was estimated from discrete 75th percentiles of sampled populations versus time (degree-days, Dd). The 10th percentile of sRD successfully approximated the lowest, life-stage-specific biochemical condition (the edge of death). Temperature could explain 59% of the variability in time to death whereas DW had no effect. Species and life-stage-specific differences in starvation parameters suggest selective adaptation to food deprivation. Previously published, interspecific functions predicting the relationship between growth rate and sRD in feeding fish larvae do not apply to individuals experiencing prolonged food deprivation. Starvation rate, edge of death, and time to death are viable proxies for the physiological processes under food deprivation of individual fish pre-recruits in the laboratory and provide useful metrics for research on the role of starvation in the sea.

    Notizen: Acute salinity tolerance limits for the estuarine spawning spotted seatrout, Cynoscion nebulosus (Cuvier). were evaluated by examining 18 h survival of larvae in an extensive range of salinity treatments (0 to 56 ppt). Larvae from eggs spawned in two different salinities (24 and 32 ppt) as well as larvae acclimated in hypersaline and brackish waters were compared. Both upper and lower salinity tolerance limits showed an age-linked pattern, decreasing to a minimum tolerance range (6.4 to 42.5 ppt) at age 3 days after hatching (at 28o C) and increasing to the widest range tolerated (1.9 to 49.8 ppt) on the last day tested (age 9 days). Acclimation to hyposaline conditions was demonstrated by larvae spawned at 32 ppt although significant hypersaline acclimation could not be demonstrated. Altered upper limits to the range tolerated by larvae from different spawning salinities indicated parental and/or early acclimation effects are important. Consistently greater vulnerability to both hyper- and hyposaline conditions at age 3 days after hatching was observed in all tests conducted. Exposures related to the onset of feeding at this time are likely explanations for this reduced tolerance.

    Notizen: The yolk and oil depletion of eggs and larvae of spotted seatrout Cynoscion nebulosus, produced by fish collected from two bays with historically different salinity regimes (Matagorda Bay (MB; 18-24%) and Upper Laguna Madre (ULM; 40–50%), Texas, U.S.A. and spawned in salinities of 20, 30 and 40%, differed in their response to both salinity and history. Time to 90% yolk depletion was significantly longer for low salinity bay fish (MB) kept at 20%, but not for high salinity bay fish (ULM) at 20%. The neutral buoyancy salinity of 1 and 2 day old MB 20% larvae was significantly lower than that of MB larvae spawned in 30 or 40%. Overall, eggs and larvae spawned by MB fish were able to hatch out and survive to 3 days post-hatch in lower salinities than those from ULM. Furthermore, the tolerance of eggs and larvae to very low salinities increased with decreasing spawning salinity. The ability of 1–9 day old ULM, but not MB, larvae to survive 18 h exposure to salinities above or below that of spawning exhibited an age-dependent pattern with day 3 being the most sensitive. This study shows that the response of spotted seatrout eggs and larvae to changes in salinity is dependent upon the spawning salinity of the adults and the prevailing salinity regime within the bay.

    Notizen: Juvenile red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus, measuring 40–49 mm s.l. tolerated abrupt transfer from 28%osalinity sea water to fresh water (〈 l%o). A significant shift in blood osmolality from a level of about 350 mosmol l−1 in sea water to a new level of about 311 mosmol l−1 was experienced by fish after 48 h in fresh water. The shift was followed by a slight reduction in blood osmolality to a sustained level of 300 mosmol l−1 after 96 h exposure to fresh water. The overall effect of increased environmental calcium on blood osmotic pressure of young red drum was not significant at the level tested.

    Notizen: Abstract.  Visual censusing was used to characterize fish assemblages on artificial and natural reefs located within the boundaries of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary (FGBNMS) in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. Emphasis was placed on determining spatial and temporal patterns in habitat utilization by fishes on an offshore artificial reef (Mobil Platform HI-A389A). Overall, 43 species were observed during diurnal surveys in the upper 24 m of the artificial reef. Midwater pelagic fishes (i.e., carangids and scombrids) accounted for over 50% of all taxa enumerated on the artificial reef; however, these taxa were transient members of the assemblage and were observed infrequently. Labrids, pomacentrids, and serranids were the dominant reef-dependent taxa. Distinct trends in vertical, diel, and seasonal abundances were observed for juvenile and adult fishes. Of the three designated depth zones (upper 1.5–9.0, middle 9.0–16.5; lower 16.5–24.0 m), abundance and species diversity were lowest in the upper zone. Nocturnal counts were characterized by a marked reduction or complete absence of most species, due in part to twilight cover-seeking and movement activities. Seasonal variation in community composition and species abundance (May versus September) was primarily due to recruitment of juveniles (0-age fishes) to the artificial reef in late summer. Increases in total fish abundance (all taxa combined) coincided with both increasing habitat rugosity and degree of fouling. Species richness on natural coral reefs in the FGBNMS was higher than on the artificial reef. Unlike the artificial reef, fish assemblages on the natural reefs were dominated by a single family (Pomacentridae) which accounted for over 50% of all individuals observed.

    Notizen: Abstract RNA:DNA ratios of larval and juvenile red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) collected from nursery habitats in the Aransas Estuary, Texas, in 1994 were quantified using a highly sensitive ethidium-bromide fluorometric technique. RNA:DNA ratios of wild red drum were evaluated by comparing individual values to a linear regression model derived for starved laboratory-reared red drum. Wild red drum were in relatively good condition with 〈5% of the RNA:DNA ratios within or below the 95% prediction interval of 4 to 5 d starved red drum. A multiple-regression model explained 54% of the variability in the RNA:DNA ratio of wild red drum, and identified length and water temperature (midday) as significant factors. RNA:DNA ratios increased with fish length [≃1.1 mm−1, over the size range investigated (5␣to 20 mm)]. The effect of temperature on the RNA: DNA ratio was assessed on different sampling trips, and ratios increased with increasing temperature. Abundance of larval and juvenile red drum in the Aransas Estuary varied as a function of both habitat (shoal grass Halodule wrightii, turtle grass Thalassia testudinum) and site (Aransas Bay, Redfish Bay); however, no differences in RNA:DNA ratios were detected between habitats or between sites. It is postulated that the nutritional condition of newly settled red drum from the Aransas Estuary in 1994 was relatively high, and that starvation was of minor importance.

    Notizen: Abstract Eggs from two separate spawning stocks of the red drum Sciaenops ocellatus (Linnaeus) were hatched, and the larvae were reared in the laboratory for 2 wk under closely controlled conditions. Total RNA, DNA, and soluble protein were measured in each population daily in triplicate pooled samples of larvae from each of three tanks. Growth rate in mm d-1 was determined for each population at 2 d intervals. Growth rate explained 72 and 95% of the variation in the RNA:DNA ratios of the two populations individually, and 86% of the variation in the RNA:DNA ratio when data from the two populations were combined. The RNA:DNA ratio appeared to be most effective as an indicator of growth in rapidly growing larvae, and to lose some resolution when growth was intermittent. The rates of deposition of RNA, DNA, and protein into tissue were all highly correlated with growth rate and with each other. Mean population RNA:DNA ratios of red drum yolk-sac larvae decreased from Day 1 post-hatch until larvae initiated successful feeding behavior, and then increased steadily throghout the remainder of the experimental period. This pattern of change in the RNA:DNA ratios during the yolk-sac stage appears to be an intrinsic developmental pattern of red drum ontogeny. The lowest values for the RNA:DNA ratio were observed just prior to the initiation of feeding or during the “critical period”, indicating that red drum larvae experience a decrease in capacity for protein synthesis as they initiate feeding. Intrinsic variation in the RNA:DNA ratio during development suggests that caution be used when comparing the RNA:DNA ratios of yolk-sac larvae to a “critical ratio” calculated from Buckley's general model.

    Notizen: Abstract We conducted predation experiments to evaluate the vulnerability of red drum Sciaenops ocellatus (Linnaeus) larvae and early juveniles to pinfish Lagodon rhomboides (Linnaeus) predators. Experiments were designed to analyze the effects of habitat complexity, prey size, and rearing condition on prey vulnerability. Three structurally different habitats [unvegetated (substrate only), shoal grass Halodule wrightii (Aschers) and turtle grass Thalassia testudinum (Bank ex König)] were simulated in experimental mesocosms. Instantaneous hourly mortality rates (Z h−1 predator−1) for hatchery-reared red drum were significantly higher in the unvegetated habitat (0.189) than in either shoal grass (0.069) or turtle grass (0.046). A similar trend in predation mortality was observed for wild-caught red drum; instantaneous hourly mortality rates were 0.166, 0.047, and 0.021 in unvegetated, shoal grass, and turtle grass habitats, respectively. Mortality rates (adjusted means) for hatchery red drum were higher than for wild individuals in all three habitats; however, the differences were not significant. Predation mortality decreased with increasing prey size (3 to 9% decrease in Z per mm increase in length), suggesting that small red drum (i.e. new settlers) were most vulnerable to predators. We conclude that habitat complexity is critical to the survival of newly settled red drum, and changes in the complexity or areal coverage of natural seagrass meadows may affect early-life survival and possibly recruitment levels.

    Notizen: Abstract Simultaneous hermaphroditism with outcrossing, a previously unconfirmed sexual system in decapod crustaceans, is documented in the shrimp Lysmata wurdemanni (Gibbes), using time-lapse video observations on mating in pairs of “female-phase” (FP) individuals. Copulations between FPs resulted in successful spawning and development of embryos. However, female-phase hermaphrodites maintained in isolation were unable to self-fertilize spawned eggs. All smaller individuals possessed characters typical of caridean males, including male gonopores, appendices masculinae, ejaculatory ducts, and cincinnuli on the first pleopods. However, the gonad of these male-phase (MP) individuals was an ovotestis with an undeveloped ovarian portion. FPs, which spawn eggs and incubate embryos, also had male gonopores and an ovotestis terminating in ejaculatory ducts containing sperm. In FPs, male pleopod characters were absent or reduced, and a female incubatory character, expanded pleopod flanges, showed a greater relative size. Smaller size classes of the population were composed only of MPs while larger size classes consisted of both MPs and FPs. “Transitionals,” individuals with MP characters but an ovotestis containing vitellogenic oocytes, were rare and overlapped completely in size with FP and larger MP individuals. It is suggested that not all MPs transform into FP hermaphrodites. Social interactions may mediate MP change into FP hermaphrodites in L. wurdemanni. The social system of L. wurdemanni and other Lysmata spp. may determine the exact form of the sexual system in these species.
