Notizen: Summary Structural and functional relationships between oocytes and their envelopes were studied by means of electron microscopy in several teleost species after injection of live fish with horseradish peroxidase. The marker first appeared in the capillaries and the pericapillary spaces of the ovarian stroma. It then entered the collagen-filled spaces between the granulosa and theca cells; these spaces are in direct connection with the pericapillary spaces. The marker penetrated between the follicle cells and into the channels of the zona radiata surrounding the microvilli which traverse these channels. The marker was never found inside the microvilli or in the follicle cells; finally, it reached the surface of the oocytes and was internalized via micropinocytosis. Six stages in the course of folliculogenesis were observed, determined by (1) the formation of follicular and thecal cellular layers and a collagen-filled space between them, (2) the development of microvilli of oocytal and follicular origin, (3) the differentiation of the vitelline envelope and the pore channels, (4) pinocytotic activity of the oocytes, and (5) rapid growth of the oocyte and its envelopes during vitellogenesis.

Notizen: During early vitellogenesis of the oocytes of Silurus glanis, the follicular cells proliferate, their epithelial organization becomes disrupted, and they transform into an irregularly structured large mass of cells engaged in intensive secretory activity. They contain nuclei, rough endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi bodies, and secretory inclusions termed “acorn bodies,” which are synthesized in the cytoplasm. The acorn bodies have two components: an electron-dense cap and a moderately electron-dense body. As development proceeds, the acorn bodies become modified into spherules of mucous material, the mucosomes. The electron-dense part persists as a small calotte or crescent often irregularly structured at the periphery of the mucosome, and fragments of it are dispersed into the interior of the mucosomal body. The mucosomes are membrane-bound and contain small granules, 55 nm in diameter. At the end of vitellogenesis, the follicle cells are filled with mucosomes, and cytoplasmic residua can only sparingly be observed among them. Oocytic microvilli extend through the zona radiata and intermingle with follicular cell processes in the cleft between the zona radiata and the belt of mucosomes during growth of the oocyte. Capillaries develop in connective tissue of the theca layer as vitellogenesis proceeds. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notizen: Summary Extravascular circulation in the pituitary of Mugil cephalus was investigated by injecting live fish with horseradish peroxidase and studying the distribution of the enzyme in the gland. The principal components of the extravascular circulatory system are the pericapillary spaces, and, arising from them, the interlobular and circumhypophyseal spaces. Extensions of these spaces penetrate the glandular parenchyma of the pars distalis, where they merge with pericellular spaces. In the neurohypophysis, pericapillary spaces are connected to the periaxonal spaces. Capillaries penetrating from the proximal neurohypophysis into the pars distalis are accompanied by neurosecretory axons. These axons form a mass of tissue which is limited near the capillaries by the pericapillary spaces and near the adenohypophysis by the interlobular spaces. Toward the interior of the adenohypophysis the amount of nervous tissue accompanying the capillaries progressively diminishes, thus reducing the distance between pericapillary and interlobular spaces. Within the pars distalis, the neurosecretory axons accompanying the capillaries are sparse, and the secretory and stellate cells are mostly located directly adjacent to the pericapillary spaces. In the neuro-intermediate lobe, interlobular spaces outline the neuro-adenohypophyseal boundary. The relationship between extravascular spaces and hormone-secreting cells varies in the different regions of the adenohypophysis depending upon the type of neurosecretory innervation in the respective region. In the regions of prolactin and gonadotropin cells, where neurosecretory axons are in direct contact with the secretory cells, the hormone-secreting and stellate cells are adjacent to the pericapillary spaces. In the regions of ACTH and STH cells, secretory and stellate cells are found adjacent to the interlobular spaces, which are interposed between the cells and the neurosecretory axons.

Beschreibung: The present study experimentally tested the influence of water temperature on the inclusion of 15 elements into juvenile European eel (Anguilla anguilla) otoliths in freshwater. It should be investigated (1) if temperature effects on otolith Sr/Ca might impair the interpretation of migration studies and (2) if the elemental composition of otoliths can be used to reconstruct experienced temperature histories of eels. Therefore, eels were kept under full experimental conditions at three different water temperatures (14 °C, 19 °C and 24 °C) for 105 days. Thereafter, laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICPMS) was conducted on the outer edge of their otoliths. Our analyses revealed significant temperature effects on otolith Na/Ca, Sr/Ca, Mg/Ca, Mn/Ca, Ba/Ca, Zr/Ca and Y/Ca ratios. Variations of Sr/Ca caused by temperature were far below those used to detect eel movements between waters of different salinities and will therefore not affect the interpretation of migration studies. Elemental fingerprints of Sr/Ca, Mg/Ca, Mn/Ca and Ba/Ca ratios resulted in clearly separated groups according to temperature treatments, indicating that changes in water temperature might lead to characteristic changes in otolith element composition. However, the successful application of elemental fingerprints to reconstruct moderate changes of water temperature seems doubtful because the influence of somatic growth on otolith microchemistry still remains unclear, and temperature-induced variations could be overlaid by changes of water element concentrations during growth periods. Nevertheless, our results contribute to the completion of knowledge about factors influencing element incorporation and help to explain variations in element composition of fish otoliths.
