    Notizen: Abstract Chromosome preparations from gill tissue of the Australian flat oyster Ostrea angasi Sowerby were studied with conventional Giemsa staining, C-banding and silver staining techniques. A diploid complement of 2n = 20 was observed, consisting of five metacentric, three submetacentric and two subtelocentric pairs. Constitutive heterochromatin was distributed as large centromeric blocks in Chromosome Pairs 3, 6, 8, 9 and 10. The nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) were located terminally on long arms of Chromosome Pairs 9 and 10. This allowed the identification of homologous chromosomes in submetacentric and subtelocentric pairs. Intraspecific variability in NOR pattern as revealed by differences in the number of silver-stained NORs (Ag-NORs) per cell was found to be very common. Comparison of the patterns of karyotype, C-band and Ag-NORs between species of the larviparous oysters for which data have been published demonstrate that the chromosomal structure of the endemic Australian and New Zealand species O. angasi shows little similarity to the Southern Hemisphere oysters O. (Eostrea)puelchana Orbigny and Tiostrea chilensis (Philippi) and the Indo-West Pacific oyster O. denselamellosa, but very high resemblance to the European species O. edulis.

    Beschreibung: Ocean acidification, as a consequence of increasing marine pCO2, may have severe effects on the physiology of marine organisms. However, experimental studies remain scarce, in particular concerning fish. While adults will most likely remain relatively unaffected by changes in seawater pH, early life-history stages are potentially more sensitive – particularly the critical stage of fertilization, in which sperm motility plays a central role. In this study, the effects of ocean acidification (decrease of pHT to 7.55) on sperm motility of Baltic cod, Gadus morhua, were assessed. We found no significant effect of decreased pH on sperm speed, rate of change of direction or percent motility for the population of cod analyzed. We predict that future ocean acidification will probably not pose a problem for sperm behavior, and hence fertilization success, of Baltic cod.

Larval development of the barnacle Amphibalanus improvisus responds variably but robustly to near-future ocean acidification. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 70: 805–811. Increasing atmospheric CO 2 decreases seawater pH in a phenomenon known as ocean acidification. In two separate experiments we found that larval development of the barnacle Amphibalanus (Balanus) improvisus was not significantly affected by the level of reduced pH that has been projected for the next 150 years. After 3 and 6 days of incubation, we found no consistent effects of reduced pH on developmental speed or larval size at pH 7.8 compared with the control pH of 8.1. After 10 days of incubation, there were no net changes in survival or overall development of larvae raised at pH 7.8 or 7.6 compared with the control pH of 8.0. In all cases, however, there was significant variation in responses between replicate batches (parental genotypes) of larvae, with some batches responding positively to reduced pH. Our results suggest that the non-calcifying larval stages of A. improvisus are generally tolerant to near-future levels of ocean acidification. This result is in line with findings for other barnacle species and suggests that barnacles do not show the greater sensitivity to ocean acidification in early life history reported for other invertebrate species. Substantial genetic variability in response to low pH may confer adaptive benefits under future ocean acidification.

    Beschreibung: Shallow coastal waters are characterized by substantial diurnal fluctuations in pH, especially in nearshore environments. The biological effects of ocean acidification in combination with these natural fluctuations have received relatively little attention to date. We exposed multiple batches ( different genotypes) of newly settled barnacles, Balanus improvisus , to constant pH under "control" (pH = 8.1) or "stable acidified" (pH = 7.7) conditions, as well as a treatment that simulated the maximum diurnal pH fluctuations seen in the nearshore habitats where this barnacle lives (±0.2 pH units), superimposed on the stable acidified treatment ("fluctuating acidified"; 7.5 ≤ pH ≤ 7.9). We found that fluctuating acidification had no effect on mean response in growth and shell mineralogy, but caused an ~20-fold increase in variance of responses, compared with stable acidification. In contrast to these results, we found no effect of fluctuating acidification on variances of response ratios for barnacle survival and shell strength. Similarly, mean survival did not vary significantly with pH. However, we observed a strong negative effect of stable and fluctuating acidification on mean shell strength. Our finding that barnacles respond differently to fluctuating pH than to stable low pH indicate the importance of including fluctuating acidification treatments when studying species that live in variable environments. Importantly, because phenotypic variance is the raw material for natural selection, and thus lays at the heart of evolutionary responses to environmental variability and change, our findings also highlight the need to study changes in variance of—as well as mean—responses to changing ocean climates.
