    Description: Organic carbon flux and community production rates were estimated on Shiraho coral reef (Ishigaki Island, Japan) from 19 to 26 September 1998. The daily net community production (Pn) and respiration rate (R) during the study period were 3 to 79 and 596 mmolC m-2 d-1, respectively. This resulted in a daily gross community production (Pg) of 599 to 675 mmolC m-2 d-1. The variation of Pn associated with the uncertainty of the curve fitting parameters of light response curves for photosynthesis was estimated using an error propagation formula. The averaged Pn ± SE was 36 ± 12 mmolC m-2 d-1 (n = 23), indicating that the Pn was significantly positive (t-test, p 〈 0.05). The apparent fluxes of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) on the reef were estimated as 30 to 36 and 5 to 7 mmolC m-2 d-1, respectively; The sum of which was comparable with the Pn during the study period. The sediment trap study conducted at 1 km off the reef and 40 m depth showed that the vertical flux of POC was 1.0 mmolC m-2 d-1. The results indicated that 6 to 7 % of the Pg was exported to offshore and about 14 to 20% of the POC exported from the reef flat and 0.2% of the Pg reached 1 km off and 40 m depth.

    Description: Monitoring seawater CO2 for a full year with seasonal observations of community metabolism in Ishigaki Island, Japan, revealed seasonal variation and anomalous values owing to the bleaching event in 1998. The daily average pCO2 showed a seasonal pattern on an annual scale, 280 to 320 ?atm in winter and 360 to 400 ?atm in summer, which was determined primarily by the seasonal change in seawater temperature. By contrast, the range in the diel variation in pCO2, 400 to 500 ?atm in summer 200 to 300 ?atm in winter, was attributed to the seasonal variation in community metabolism: Gross primary production (P g ) and respiration (R) were high in summer and low in winter. During the 1998 bleaching event, although P g and R increased, community excess organic production (E) decreased by three quarters compared with the same month in 1999, when the coral community showed high recovery. This change in metabolism led to large diel range and increased average value of pCO2 levels in the seawater on the reef flat. The decrease in the range and increase in the average value of pCO2 were observed by monitoring the Palau barrier reef flat, where overall mortality of corals occurred after the bleaching. All the metabolic parameters, P g , R, E and calcification (G) were reduced by half after the bleaching, which increased the average pCO2 value by 10 ?atm and decreased its diel range from 200-400 ?atm to 100-200 ?atm. Bleaching and resultant mortality of coral reefs led to degradation of their metabolic performance, and thus resulted in the loss of their active interaction with the carbon cycle.

    Notes: Summary The effects of a new calcium antagonist, CD-832, on experimental coronary artery spasms were studied in Göttingen miniature pigs. Pigs underwent endothelial denudation at the left anterior descending coronary artery using a balloon catheter. Changes in the diameter of the denuded and nondenuded site in response to an intracoronary administration of serotonin (10 µg/kg) or histamine (10 µg/kg) were assessed quantitatively by selective coronary arteriography 1 week after endothelial denudation. Percent reductions of the coronary artery diameter induced by serotonin or histamine in the denuded site were significantly greater than those in the nondenuded site (p〈0.01). Coronary artery spasm induced by serotonin or histamine in the denuded site was attenuated in a dose-dependent manner by intravenous infusion of CD-832 (10 and 30 µg/kg/min) or nifedipine (1 and 3 µg/kg/min). The degrees of inhibition of coronary artery spasm by CD-832 were similar to those produced by nifedipine. CD-832 and nifedipine at the high dose caused comparable increases in the basal coronary artery diameter. These results suggest that CD-832 may be a useful drug for the treatment of coronary artery spasm.

    Notes: Abstract Dissolution of membraneous composite ions of copper sulfide precipitate-based ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) has been measured in various ligand solutions by ICP atomic emission spectrometry and atomic absorption spectrometry from the solution side and by X-ray photoelectron spectrometry on the electrode surface. Asymmetric dissolution, amount of copper dissolved is higher than that of sulfur, was generally observed. The copper dissolution is correlated with the potential response as well as conditional stability constants. The results are discussed in terms of the charge separation caused by the asymmetric dissolution and electrostatic interaction of charged ligands with the space charge on the electrode surface in view of microscopic characterization of ISEs in metal buffer solutions in general. The results were also used to clarify the reason for some discrepancies of complex stability constants obtained by precipitate-based ISEs and other methods.

    Notes: Summary Experimental and clinical studies suggest that X-irradiation to the coronary artery may enhance vasoconstrictive response. This study aimed to clarify the effect of X-irradiation on the vasomotor response of porcine coronary artery. X-ray (15 Gy) was selectively irradiated to the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) in 14 Göttingen miniature pigs. The coronary vasomotor responses to serotonin at the irradiated site (LAD) and the control site (the left circumflex artery; LCX) were assessed by quantitative arteriography before and 1 h and 1, 2, and 4 weeks after X-irradiation. At 2 weeks, endothelium-dependent vasodilation in response to substance P was also evaluated arteriographically in vivo. At 2 weeks, isometric tension studies were performed to evaluate the constrictive responses of medial muscle strips and endothelium-dependent relaxation. Coronary vasoconstriction in response to serotonin was enhanced 1 week after, and further augmentation was noted 2 and 4 weeks after X-irradiation. Endothelium-dependent vasodilation in response to substance P in vivo was preserved 2 weeks after X-irradiation. Coronary arteriography showed no organic stenosis at the irradiated site. In vitro studies demonstrated that medial muscle strips of the irradiated site showed hypercontraction in response to serotonin and that endothelium-dependent relaxation in response to serotonin and substance P was preserved at the irradiated site. A histological study revealed no appreciable changes of the endothelial cells or intimal thickening. These results suggest that coronary vasoconstriction in response to serotonin was enhanced 1 week after X-irradiation, and that this hyperconstriction was caused by the increased constrictive response of medial smooth muscle, but not by impaired endothelium-dependent relaxation or by a geometric effect due to intimal thickening.

    Description: Background: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a well-known molecule mediating neuronal survival and angiogenesis. However, its clinical significance in ischemic stroke is still controversial. The goal of this study was to examine the temporal profile of plasma VEGF value and its clinical significance in ischemic stroke with taking its subtypes into consideration. Methods: We prospectively enrolled 171 patients with ischemic stroke and age- and gender-matched healthy subjects. The stroke patients were divided into 4 subtypes: atherothrombotic infarction (ATBI, n = 34), lacunar infarction (LAC, n = 45), cardioembolic infarction (CE, n = 49) and other types (OT, n = 43). Plasma VEGF values were measured as a part of multiplex immunoassay (Human MAP v1.6) and we obtained clinical information at 5 time points (days 0, 3, 7, 14 and 90) after the stroke onset. Results: Plasma VEGF values were significantly higher in all stroke subtypes but OT than those in the controls throughout 90 days after stroke onset. There was no significant difference in the average VEGF values among ATBI, LAC, and CE. VEGF values were positively associated with neurological severity in CE patients, while a negative association was found in ATBI patients. After adjustment for possible confounding factors, plasma VEGF value was an independent predictor of poor functional outcome in CE patients. Conclusions: Although plasma VEGF value increases immediately after the stroke onset equally in all stroke subtypes, its significance in functional outcome may be different among the stroke subtypes.

    Description: Background: Vesicourethral anastomotic stricture (VAS) is a rare but serious complication following radical prostatectomy (RP), and various types of managements for VAS have been proposed. We investigated the efficacy of transurethral balloon dilation in the management of VAS after RP. Methods: A total of 128 consecutive patients underwent open RP at our hospital between 2008 and 2013; of these, 10 patients (7.8 %) developed VAS. Transurethral balloon dilation was performed in all 10 patients, using a high pressure balloon catheter under fluoroscopic and endoscopic guidance. Follow-up endoscopy was performed, and patients in whom the stricture had recurred underwent repeat dilation. We retrospectively evaluated the management of VAS and short-term efficacy of high pressure balloon dilation. Results: The mean time from RP to diagnosis of VAS was 9 months (2–40 months); eight patients (80 %) were diagnosed within 6 months of RP. Balloon dilation of VAS was technically successful in all patients, and no perioperative complications were recorded. The median follow-up after balloon dilation was 24 months (7–67 months). There was no recurrence of VAS in eight patients (80 %) after the first balloon dilation, and all patients were controlled within the twice. Conclusion: High pressure balloon dilation is a highly effective and minimally invasive procedure for treating VAS.
