Schlagwort(e): Urban runoff -- Management -- Cost effectiveness. ; Environmental economics. ; Electronic books.
Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Addressing a huge knowledge gap from a policy perspective, this volume focuses on the economic tools available for stormwater runoff control. It addresses the true costs and benefits of stormwater management practices and examines the incentives that can be used to encourage their adoption. The book provides case studies demonstrating the application of various incentives, such as tradable allowances and fees with rebate. It also presents the theory behind the different mechanisms used and illustrates successes and potential obstacles to implementation. The contributors are primarily concerned with the sociodemographic and economic aspects of people's participation in stormwater runoff control.

Schlagwort(e): Watershed management -- Economic aspects. ; Watershed restoration -- Economic aspects. ; Electronic books.
Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Whether addressing pollution problems or helping protect a specific use, watershed associations are finding that the competition for funds is getting harder. While we can grasp the value of our streams for fishing or kayaking and other services, or their cultural value, or their value to an ecosystem, putting a dollar value on those benefits is not an easy task, but it is sometimes a necessary one. A handbook for advocates and stakeholders, Environmental Economics for Watershed Restoration provides guidance to those who are interested in understanding and incorporating economic valuation in project prioritization and other decision-making aspects of stream or watershed restoration. It provides background on the types of ecological goods and services that are often valued and details the types of questions that must be asked in watershed project analysis. The book allows those who are not economists to be comfortable discussing things like contingent valuation, marginal costs, nonmarket goods, and other terms needed to satisfy the economic analysis requirements often needed to secure funding for projects. In some cases, economic analysis does require input from a trained economist, but in many cases the analysis needed to get a grip on the problem can be tackled by someone familiar with the situation, as long as he or she has access to essential economic guidance. Environmental Economics for Watershed Restoration can provide that guidance.

Beschreibung: 1. A deep chlorophyll maximum dominated by Cryptomonas phaseolus, Cryptomonas undulata and often also by Cryptomonas rostratiformis was observed near the summer chemocline of the dimictic, meso-eutrophic lake Schlachtensee from 1990 to 1996.2. The cryptophyte populations occupied a stratified water column of about 2 m thickness just below the oxycline. They were never observed in the summer epilimnion. In their habitat, oxygen concentration was always lower than 1 mg l-1 and light was growth-limiting, whereas nitrogen and phosphorus were available at high concentrations.3. A very large portion of the populations stayed in the anaerobic, sulphide-containing water layer. Below the chemocline purple and green sulphur bacteria coexisted.4. The cryptophyte populations were maintained by in situ growth due to low-light adapted photosynthesis and not due to phagotrophy.5. Short-term changes in the light climate near the chemocline could explain the coexistence of different cryptophyte species.

Notizen: An interesting series of high molecular weight thermoplastic polymers, based on dihydric phenols and epichlorohydrin, have been prepared. The polymers have, in common, a structure which can be represented by the general repeating unit where E is a radical residuum from a dihydric phenol. Certain properties appear characteristic of this class of polymers. All contain some chain branching through the secondary hydroxyl group. They are amorphous, noncrystallizable, transparent, tough, and thermally stable. They show two glassy state transitions, a minor transition at about -70°C. and a major transition at a considerably higher temperature. This family of polymers provides an excellent means for studying structure-property correlations. Data are reported showing the effect of the structure of the dihydric phenol moiety (E) on the major glass transition temperature and on certain barrier properties of a series of these polymers. The polymer prepared from 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane, bisphenol A, is considered typical of this series; its mechanical and physical properties are described in somewhat more detail and compared with properties of certain commercial polymers.
