Abstract:
The minimal nutritional requirements of 94 thermophilic strains of the species Bacillus stearothermophilus and B. coagulans, grown at 55 °C, were determined. Most strains had an absolute methionine requirement. Some strains synthesized methionine by means of a methyl donor (choline, betaine), a methyl acceptor (homocystine), and a methyl activator (vitamin B 12 ). The effects of temperature as inducing variations in nutritional requirements are briefly discussed.
