Notes: Summary. Initially, techniques for autografting ovaries with or without adnexa were developed but a 30% vascular failure rate was experienced by day 14. Of the technically successful grafts, 50% proved fertile. Single vascularized ovaries with their oviducts were then allografted into bilaterally ovariectomized rabbits by microsurgical techniques and the vascular failure rate was reduced to 5% of 40 grafts. The time-course of rejection in untreated recipients was mapped by histological examination and by 24-h culture of fallopian tubes after autopsy at different times after transplantation. Control allografts were consistently rejected by day 20. Striking prolongation of both types of graft was obtained with a short 17-day course of cyclosporin A at 10 or 15 mg day−1kg−1. Indeed, significant evidence of rejection was found in only two ovaries out of 20 so far examined histologically. Mating behaviour, ovulation, ciliary function and transport of ova appeared normal in 80% of the recipients as long as 18 weeks after stopping cyclosporin A treatment. Only one of the ovarian allografted rabbits has so far been mated and this produced seven normal young 126 days after transplantation. However, none of the five animals mated after being allografted with en bloc adnexa have so far become pregnant.

Notes: Data are presented demonstrating the room-temperature operation of an InP-InGaAs vertical cavity surface-emitting laser. The laser structure has an active region consisting of a 2-μm-thick bulk InGaAs layer and has an emission wavelength of 1.65 μm. Both the front and rear mirrors consist of quarter-wave stacks of four pairs of electron beam evaporated layers of Si and SiO2 which have been optimized for maximum reflectivity. The structures are characterized in the transmission mode using a pump beam from a Nd:YAG laser at 1.06 μm.

Notes: Single-frequency integrated external cavity distributed Bragg reflector lasers emitting near 1.5 μm have been fabricated. The chirp and cw linewidth measurements of these devices show that lasers with long external cavity exhibit lower chirp and lower cw linewidth compared to lasers with short external cavity. The experimental data are explained by using theoretical calculations.

Notes: Ten psoriatic patients were treated with an accelerated PUVA regimen. Nine patients cleared in an average of 13·7 treatments (range 4-24) after an average total UVA dose of 83 J/cm2 (range 18-186). One patient had to withdraw due to pruritus and burning and six others had burning problems. The high incidence of burning may limit the routine use of this irradiation regimen.

Notes: The Foss-Let fat analyser–based on the density measurement of a fat/ tetrachloroethylene extract in a magnetic float cell–has been evaluated on a range of different foods, particularly meat and meat products. It is rapid (6–7 min per determination) and gives results that are reproducible and of acceptable accuracy for quality control work when compared with those obtained by standard methods.

Notes: We report two cases of severe idiopathic solar urticaria treated.1 with plasma exchange therapy. Previous treatment which included antihistamines and. in one patient, desensitization with psoralens and ultraviolet A (PUVA) and narrowband ultraviolet B phototherapy produced only partial benefit. The effect of plasma exchange therapy was assessed using monochromator phototesting and intradermal injection of in vitro irradiated serum. One patient responded but relapsed within 2 weeks. We have failed to demonstrate a lasting benefit from plasma exchange therapy (PExT) in the treatment of two patients with idiopathic solar urticaria.

Notes: Summary Background Most studies investigating steroid allergy have been performed with tixocortol pivalate, hydrocortisone butyrate and budesonide. Betnovate® and Dermovate® are widely prescribed in the U.K. but little is known about the frequency of sensitization to them. Objectives To determine the optimum method to detect contact allergy to betamethasone valerate (BV) and clobetasol propionate (CP). Methods Seven centres tested consecutive patients attending for investigation of suspected allergic contact dermatitis to these steroids at a range of concentrations in different vehicles. Results Of 1562 patients tested, 16 (1%) reacted to either BV or CP. Ten patients (0·7%) reacted to BV and 13 (0·8%) to CP. Two patients of a further centre were included in analysis of dilutions and vehicles. Sixteen of a total of 25 reactions (64%) were identified with a 1% dilution in ethanol. Conclusions Consideration should be given to adding BV and CP to a standard allergy series, given that both are frequently used in the treatment of eczema and that most patients sensitized to them are not identified with currently used markers of steroid allergy. If patch tests to BV and CP are initially negative, but an allergy is suspected, the patient should be further investigated. Further studies are required to identify the ideal patch test material.

Notes: In view of the presence of the polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMN) chemoattractant Leukotriene B4 (LTB4) in the surface scale of the psoriatic lesion and the known therapeutic effect of phototherapy in psoriasis, the photostability of LTB4 was investigated.LTB4 was irradiated with dosages of UVB (290–320 nm) ranging from 100–1500 mJ cm−2 and with dosages of UVA (320–400 nm) ranging from 5–40 J cm−2. Topical application of UVB irradiated LTB4 to the forearm skin of normal volunteers showed a marked reduction in cutaneous erythema, paralleled histologically by reduced transepidermal PMN migration when compared with sites of application of unirradiated and UVA irradiated LTB4. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) demonstrated a dose-dependent photodegradation of LTB4 by UVB irradiation. UVA irradiation produced no such effect. The wavelengths responsible lie within the absorption spectrum of LTB4. In vitro chemotaxis studies, using an under agarose technique, showed a statistically significant reduction in the migration of PMN from both psoriatic and non-psoriatic subjects to the UVB irradiated LTB4 compared with the unirradiated LTB4, whilst UVA irradiated LTB4 produced a normal PMN chemotactic response.
