Notizen: Conclusions Our major conclusions are that the strong correlation of P2O5 and light REE abundances in basalts does not (a) require residual apatite or whitlockite during partial melting, or (b) imply that P2O5 and REE-rich magmas are derived from more refractory sources than the source of magmas with lower P2O5 and REE contents.

Notizen: Abstract The abundances of Sc, rare earths, Zr, Hf, Ta and Th were determined in five New England granitic plutons. Similar data are reported for separated minerals from three of the units. The granites can be divided into the Massachusetts alkaline group (Cape Ann, Peabody, Quincy) and the Rhode Island subalkaline group (Narragansett Pier, Westerly). Analyses for three samples from each pluton indicate that the Westerly granite is heterogeneous in both major and trace elements. Th abundances vary considerably (factor of 2) in both Rhode Island granites. Zr and Hf are heterogeneously distributed in all the granites while the rare earths are more homogeneous (〈 ± 20% deviation from mean). Eu depletions in all the granites imply that feldspar was involved either as a cumulate during fractional crystallization or as a residual phase during anatexis. Because the Massachusetts granites are associated with syenites and show evidence for low water fugacity and denser rocks at depth, these granites probably developed from basic magmas as a result of extensive feldspar crystallization. Depletion of Tb, Dy, Yb, Lu, Zr, Hf and Ta in the Rhode Island granites suggest participation of zircon or garnet as residues of partial melting or as crystal cumulates. These granites crystallized under nearly water saturated conditions and are characterized by abundant pegmatites. The presence of a water rich phase may also have been important in the depletion of elements which form stable complexes in aqueous solutions.

Notizen: Abstract The extrusive rocks of Hekla are predominantly flows of basaltic andesite and andesite (icelandite) but each eruptive cycle is initiated by production of tephra of andesitic, dacitic, and even rhyolitic composition. The evolution of basaltic andesites to dacites and rhyolites can be explained by crystallization and (presumably gravitative) separation of olivine, titaniferous magnetite, plagioclase, and probably augite. No contamination by sialic crustal material is required. Although basalts are never erupted from Hekla the origin of the basaltic andesites is probably best explained by separation of magnesian olivine, augite, and calcic plagioclase from an olivine tholeiite parent, producing an initial differentiation trend toward a high Fe/Mg ratio. The increase in Fe/Mg ratio is limited by the appearance of magnetite as a liquidus phase. From the Fe/Mg ratios of the lavas and from compositions of the plagioclase phenocrysts the water pressure of the basaltic andesites is estimated to have been between 0.6 and 2.4 kb. Total pressure may have been significantly higher. A best estimate for the water content is approximately 2 1/2 to 6 weight percent. This high water content accounts for the explosive initiation of each eruptive cycle and is consistent with fractional crystallization in a shallow magma chamber.

Notizen: Abstract Surface samples of peridotites and hornblendite mylonites from St. Paul's Rocks, and dredge samples from the flanks of the massif, have been analyzed for Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic ratios and Rb, Sr, and REE concentrations. This data, coupled with previous K and REE data, are used to develop a self-consistent model for the genesis of these ultramafic rocks. This model involves metasomatism of an ocean island-type mantle about 155 m.y. ago by a strongly light-REE-enriched metasomatic fluid, probably derived from the same mantle. This metasomatism produced light-REE-enriched materials which were isotopically homogeneous on a small scale (100 m), and isotopically heterogeneous on a large (km) scale. The geochemical relationships between the peridotites and the hornblendites were established by metamorphic equilibration on a relatively small scale (〈10 m). The “average” mantle produced by these events is characterized by87Sr/86Sr=0.7034,143Nd/144Nd=0.51291,206Pb/204Pb=19.33 and 207/204=15.63. An alkali basalt which postdates the mylon-itization of the ultramafic massif has an isotopic character which is identical to the “average” ultramafic massif; it also lies on the five-dimensional isotopic mantle plane of Zindler et al. (1982). With respect to major elements, trace elements, and Sr, Nd and Pb isotopes, the average ultramafic rock of the St. Paul's massif is an ideal candidate for a mantle source from which alkali basalts can be derived by partial melting; the St. Paul's massif is in fact the first such example of an ultramafic rock which meets all the requirements to be an alkali basalt source.

Notizen: Abstract Basalts from 5 Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) sites in the northwest Indian Ocean (Somali Basin and Arabian Sea) have general geochemical features consistent with a spreading origin at the ancient Carlsberg Ridge. However, compared to most MORBS from other oceans they have low normative olivine, TiO2, and Zr contents. There is no evidence that the mantle source of these northwest Indian Ocean basalts was enriched in incompatible elements relative to the Atlantic and Pacific ocean mantles. In detail, incompatible element abundances in these DSDP basalts establish that they evolved from several compositionally distinct parental magmas. In particular, basalts from site 236 in the Somali Basin have relatively high SiO2 and low Na, P, Ti, and Zr contents. These compositional features along with low normative olivine contents are similar to those proposed for melts derived by two-stage (or dynamic) melting. Published data also indicate there is no enrichment in incompatible elements at the southwest Indian Ocean triple junction, although southwest Indian Ocean basalts have slightly higher 87Sr/86Sr than “normal” Atlantic MORB. The data suggest that there are significant subtle geochemical variations in the Indian Ocean mantle sources, but are insufficient to show whether these variations have a systematic temporal or geographic distribution.

Notizen: Abstract The Pliocene and Quaternary Patagonian alkali basalts of southernmost South America can be divided into two groups. The “cratonic” basalts erupted in areas of Cenozoic plateau volcanism and continental sedimentation and show considerable variation in 87Sr/86Sr (0.70316 to 0.70512), 143Nd/144Nd (ɛNd) and 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, and 208Pb/204Pb ratios (18.26 to 19.38, 15.53 to 15.68, and 38.30 to 39.23, respectively). These isotopic values are within the range of oceanic island basalts, as are the Ba/La, Ba/Nb, La/Nb, K/Rb, and Cs/Rb ratios of the “cratonic” basalts. In contrast, the “transitional” basalts, erupted along the western edge of the outcrop belt of the Pliocene and Quaternary plateau lavas in areas that were the locus of earlier Cenozoic Andean orogenic arc colcanism, have a much more restricted range of isotopic composition which can be approximated by 87Sr/86Sr=0.7039±0.0004, ɛNd, 206Pb/204Pb=18.60±0.08, 207Pb/204Pb=15.60±0.01, and 208Pb/204Pb=38.50±0.10. These isotopic values are similar to those of Andean orogenic are basalts and, compared to the “cratonic” basalts, are displaced to higher 87Sr/86Sr at a given 143Nd/144Nd and to higher 207Pb/204Pb at a given 208Pb/204Pb. The “transitional” basalts also have Ba/La, Ba/Nb, La/Nb, and Cs/Rb ratios higher than the “cratonic” and oceanic island basalts, although not as high as Andean orogenic are basalts. In contrast to the radiogenic isotopes, δ18O values for both groups of the Patagonian alkali basalts are indistinguishable and are more restricted than the range reported for Andean orogenic are basalts. Whole rock δ18O values calculated from mineral separates for both groups range from 5.3 to 6.5, while measured whole rock δ18O values range from 5.1 to 7.8. The trace element and isotopic data suggest that decreasing degrees of partial melting in association with lessened significance of subducted slabderived components are fundamental factors in the west to east transition from arc to back-arc volcanism in southern South America. The “cratonic” basalts do not contain the slab-derived components that impart the higher Ba/La, Ba/Nb, La/Nb, Cs/Rb, 87Sr/86Sr at a given 143Nd/144Nd, 207Pb/204Pb at a given 208Pb/204Pb, and δ18O to Andean orogenic arc basalts. Instead, these basalts are formed by relatively low degrees of partial melting of heterogeneous lower continental lithosphere and/or asthenosphere, probably due to thermal and mechanical pertubation of the mantle in response to subduction of oceanic lithosphere below the western margin of the continent. The “transitional” basalts do contain components added to their source region by either (1) active input of slab-derived components in amounts smaller than the contribution to the mantle below the arc and/or with lower Ba/La, Ba/Nb, La/Nb, and Cs/Rb ratios than below the arc due to progressive downdip dehydration of the subducted slab; or (2) subarc source region contamination processes which affected the mantle source of the “transitional” basalts earlier in the Cenozoic.

Notizen: Abstract The Vestmannaeyjar archipelago is composed of alkalic lavas erupted at the southern end of the active, southward propagating, Eastern Volcanic Zone. Recent eruptions include the most primitive (Surtsey) and most evolved (Eldfell) compositions found in this area. We studied time-stratigraphic sample suites from both eruptions to characterize the magmatic environment of Vestmannacyjar. All samples are nearly homogeneous in radiogenic isotopic ratios (87Sr/86Sr 0.70304 to 0.70327;143Nd/144Nd 0.51301 to 0.50307;206Pb/204Pb 18.96 to 19.18;207Pb/204Pb 15.50 to 15.53;208Pb/204Pb 38.47 to 38.76; KH Park and A Zindler, in preparation). Compositional trends of lavas from the two eruptions are not consistent with fractionation in a near-surface environment, but indicate rather moderate pressure evolution of small magma batches. At Eldfell, mugearite lavas can be modeled by 30% closed-system fractional crystallization of olivine+plagioclase+clinopyroxene+Fe−Ti oxides from parental hawaiite. The phase proportions are consistent with an experimentally determined moderate pressure (8 kbar) cotectic in mildly alkaline systems (Mahood and Baker 1986). Compositional variations of Surtsey lavas can be modeled by crystallization of clinopyroxene+olivine+plagioclase+minor Fe−Ti oxides. The presence of sodic plagioclase megacrysts and clinopyroxene with ∼8 wt% Al2O3 in xenoliths from Surtsey lavas are consistent with a moderate pressure fractionation event. Based on major-element and REE data the most primitive Surtsey lavas formed by small degrees of melting of a lherzolite source. The alkaline nature of Vestmannaeyjar lavas is not the result of assimilation of lower crustal melts (cf. Oskarsson et al. 1985; Steinthorsson et al. 1985).

Notizen: Abstract Gough Island is composed of an alkaline olivine basalt-trachyte series. A fractional crystallization model for the development of these rocks has been evaluated by correlating the geochemical trends of major and trace elements. Beginning with an alkali olivine basalt parent the major element abundances were used to determine the varying proportions of crystallizing minerals required to generate the various residual liquids. A least-squares computer model was used for this calculation. The modal proportions of cumulative minerals and trace element distribution coefficients were used to predict the trace element abundances in each rock type. Three significant trace element trends are observed in Gough Island rocks: (1) increasing rare earth (RE) abundance and relative light RE enrichment with increasing major element differentiation, (2) marked Eu, Sr, and Ba depletions in late stage trachytes, (3) Cr and M enrichment in picrite basalt. The trace element abundances predicted by the fractional crystallization model are in good agreement with these observed trends. A fractional crystallization process involving olivine, pyroxene, feldspar, and apatite accounts for all the significant major and trace element trends observed in Gough Island rocks.

Notizen: Abstract Crustal xenoliths in the 1961 andesite flow of Calbuco Volcano, in the southern Southern Volcanic Zone (SSVZ) of the Andes, consist predominantly of pyroxene granulites and hornblende gabbronorites. The granulites contain plagioclase+pyroxene+magnetite± amphibole, and have pronounced granoblastic textures. Small amounts of relict amphibole surrounded by pyroxene-plagioclase-magnetite-glass symplectites are found in some specimens. These and similar textures in the gabbronorites are interpreted as evidence of dehydration melting. Mineral and bulk rock geochemical data indicate that the granulites are derived from an incompatible trace element depleted basaltic protolith that underwent two stages of metamorphism: a moderate pressure, high temperature stage accompanied by melting and melt extraction from some samples, followed by thermal metamorphism after entrainment in the Calbuco andesite lavas. High ɛNd T values (+4.0 to +8.6), Nd-isotope model ages of 1.7–2.0 Ga, and trace element characteristics like chondrite normalized La/Yb 〈1 and La/Nb ≤1 indicate that the protoliths were oceanic basalts. Similar oceanic metabasalts of greenschist to amphibolite facies are found in the Paleozoic metamorphic belt that underlies the Chilean coastal ranges. Mineral and bulk rock compositions of the gabbronorite xenoliths indicate that they are cognate, crystallizing from the basaltic andesite magma at Calbuco. Crystallization pressures for the gabbros based on total Al contents in amphibole are 6–8 kbar. These pressures point to middle to lower crustal storage of the Calbuco magma. Neither granulite nor gabbro xenoliths have the appropriate geochemical characteristics to be contaminants of Calbuco andesites, although an ancient sedimentary contaminant is indicated by the lava compositions. The presence of oceanic metabasaltic xenoliths, together with the sedimentary isotopic imprint, suggests that the lower crust beneath the volcano is analogous to the coastal metamorphic belt, which is an accretionary complex of intercalated basalts and sediments that formed along the Paleozoic Gondwanan margin. If this is the case, the geochemical composition of the lower and middle crust beneath the SSVZ is significantly different from that of most recent SSVZ volcanic rocks.
