Notes: Comparative electron polarization measurement with a helium electron polarimeter and a high-precision Mott detector are presented. For these measurements the helium electron polarimeter was calibrated according to theory, whereas the Mott detector was calibrated independently with an improved auxiliary-target method. The comparison of the experimental results reveals various problems inherent in helium electron polarimetry, such as poor efficiency and problems occurring in precise light polarization measurements. At present, a high-precision Mott detector is therefore clearly superior to a helium polarimeter with respect to efficiency and accuracy. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The accuracy of the calibration of a Mott polarimeter with a recently suggested method that uses an auxiliary target is compared with the accuracy obtained with the classical double-scattering experiment in its improved form. It turns out that the former method is affected by depolarization of the polarized incident beam in the auxiliary target. This systematic error source can, however, be eliminated by performing an additional asymmetry measurement.

Notes: The dispersion behavior of surface plasmons on silver gratings in the center of the first Brillouin zone is determined by measurements of the reflected light as a function of amplitude and of the profile of the gratings. We studied the dispersion relation of sinusoidal gratings, rectangular gratings, and incoherent gratings. We found a strict relationship between the profile of the grating and the dispersion relation of the surface plasmons. Our experiments showed at small amplitudes a crossing of the dispersion branches without a gap. For higher amplitudes a frequency or a momentum gap occurred depending on whether the profile had higher Fourier components or not. The experimental results are in accordance with numerical simulations.

Notes: The constant photocurrent spectra (CPM) have been measured in a series of undoped a-Si:H/a-Si1−xCx:H multilayers with different thickness (db) of the a-Si1−xCx:H barrier layers from 5 to 100 A(ring). It is found that the apparent defect absorption and the apparent Urbach energy in the CPM spectra increase monotonically with db. These results show that the interface properties are strongly affected by the barrier layer thickness. The interface defect density, as evaluated from the CPM spectra, increases from 5×109 to 9×1011 cm−2 with db. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract – In contrast to the anticipated increase in dental caries following the cessation of water fluoridation in the cities Chemnitz (formerly Karl-Marx-Stadt) and Plauen, a significant fall in caries prevalence was observed. This trend corresponded to the national caries decline and appeared to be a new population-wide phenomenon. Additional surveys (N=1017) carried out in the formerly-fluoridated towns of Spremberg (N=9042) and Zittau (N=6232) were carried out in order to support this unexpected epidemiological finding. Pupils from these towns, aged 8/9-, 12/13- and 15/16-years, have been examined repeatedly over the last 20 years using standardised caries-methodological procedures. While the data provided additional support for the established fact of a caries reduction brought about by the fluoridation of drinking water (48 % on average), it has also provided further support for the contention that caries prevalence may continue to fall after the reduction of fluoride concentration in the water supply from about 1 ppm to below 0.2 ppm F. Caries levels for the 12-year-olds of both towns significantly decreased during the years 1993–96, following the cessation of water fluoridation. In Spremberg, DMFT fell from 2.36 to 1.45 (38.5 %) and in Zittau from 2.47 to 1.96 (20.6%). These findings have therefore supported the previously observed change in the caries trend of Chemnitz and Plauen. The mean of 1.81 DMFT for the 12-year-olds, computed from data of the four towns, is the lowest observed in East Germany during the past 40 years. The causes for the changed caries trend were seen on the one hand in improvements in attitudes towards oral health behaviour and, on the other hand, to the broader availabilty and application of preventive measures (F-salt, F-toothpastes, fissure sealants etc.). There is, however, still no definitive explanation for the current pattern and further analysis of future caries trends in the formerly fluoridated towns would therefore seem to be necessary.

Notes: Objective:  To investigate whether application of allergic patch tests with transparent semi-occlusive adhesive plastic foils yields higher test sensitivity than when tapes are used. To study whether such foils compared to tapes allow a shorter application time of tests. Methods:  We applied different doses of budesonide printed on polyester squares and vehicle control squares to budesonide allergic subjects for 4 days. Each subject was tested with a set of tests both with a tape and a foil. We assessed all tests when they had been detached and additionally those applied with foils at earlier time points. All assessments were performed both visually and with a laser Doppler perfusion imaging technique. Results:  Test sensitivity is higher with foil applications than when tapes are used and the perfusion is higher with the foils in many cases. The foils allow detachment of visually positive tests before 48 hours in some subjects, regardless of dose. Conclusions:  Test applications with transparent semi-occlusive adhesive plastic foils is sensitive and should be considered for application of patch tests when a short application time is important as when tests are carried out with occupationally hazardous allergens or when test substances containing allergens are expected to be irritating.

Notes: Proper design, construction, testing and maintenance of Class 1 (hazardous waste) injection wells can guarantee that all waste is delivered to the injection zone. To assess the effects of waste injection, analytical models were developed which predict waste movement and pressure increases within the injection zone, and describe upward permeation through confining layers.A basic plume model was used to track waste from several injection wells with varied injection history at DuPont's Victoria Texas site. To determine the maxi-mum distance that any portion of the waste might travel, special purpose models were employed to account for (1) density differences between the waste and the native formation brine, and (2) layered permeability variation within the injection zone. The results were generalized to a “multiplying factor concept,” which facilitates development of a worst-case scenario.A pressure distribution model based on the Theis (1935) equation for radial flow was applied to the Victoria site, with modifications to account for multiple wells, injection history and geological complexities.Permeation into an intact confining layer was investigated by a new technique based on the Hantush and Jacob (1955) “leaky aquifer” theory. The model defines the maximum permeation distance, taking into account post-injection pressure decay.Defects within confining layers, such as faults, fractures and abandoned wells, have been considered. Studies to evaluate their detailed characteristics are continuing. Initial results indicate that faults and fractures are not likely to provide conductive pathways in Gulf Coast settings, and site-specific evaluations are required to assess the impact of abandoned wells.

Notes: A new type of Gm genetic marker combination in an IgG1 immunoglobulin, Gm(z) together with a non-a marker, is here described. This indicates the presence of a new gene, Gmz,non-a, which most likely originated on the basis of an intragenic recombination at the IgG1 cistron. Immunochemical and immunogenetic studies showed that no other IgG1 Gm markers were expressed by the unusual gene, and there was no evidence for deletions or duplications at the IgG1 cistron.
