Notes: A general method for the determination of the resistivity tensor from multiterminal measurements is developed, based on the solution of a Laplace equation for the potential inside the sample with suitable boundary conditions. We have performed the calculation in the general case of an arbitrary contact geometry, with finite width of the contacts on the sample surfaces. The precision and the accuracy of the calculation and of the hypothesis of the model have been checked by means of a self-consistent method based on the reconstruction of voltage measurements. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Several therapeutic modalities have been proposed for the treatment of vitiligo either to achive repigmentation in the lesions or to stabilize the disease. Narrow-band UVB therapy has been shown to be effective and safe for use in the management of vitiligo; its wavelength is not so different from 308 nm XeCl excimer laser radiation. We present an open and uncontrolled pilot study of 24 patients (12 men, 12 women) in whom vitiligous patches were treated twice a week, for 9 months with 308 nm XeCl laser radiation. Seven of the 24 patients showed greater than 75% repigmentation, six patients showed repigmentation of between 25 and 75% and six patients showed less than 25% repigmentation. In five patients no signs of repigmentation were noted. The therapeutic benefit was stable during the 12-month follow-up period. Although these results are promising, treatment has so far been limited to small numbers of patients and a short follow-up period. Other prospective studies are needed to assess the efficacy of this treatment modality.

Notes: A radiologic evaluation of marginal bone loss around single implants ad modum Brånemark and their adjacent teeth was performed: 58 adults with 71 fixtures were followed up to 3 years after crown installation. The following factors were considered: age, cause of tooth loss, vertical relation between fixture and teeth, distance between adjacent teeth, distance between fixture and natural tooth, jaw region. Specified distance were measured as well as marginal bone levels around fixtures and tooth surfaces in magnified standardized intraoral radiographs. The results show a loss of marginal bone support at tooth surfaces adjacent to inserted implants during the interval between preoperative examination and crown installation that exceeds the loss during subsequent years. The largest bone loss was observed when implants were placed next to lateral upper incisors. A strong correlation was found between bone loss at adjacent teeth and the horizontal distance fixture-tooth. With decreasing distance the bone loss increased, especially in the upper incisor region. At present it seems difficult to predict which individual or individual condition may have a higher risk for bone loss, due to large intra- and 1 interindividual variation.

Notes: Abstract  We examined standard niche axes (time, place, and food) for three sympatric teiid lizards in the Amazon rain forest. Activity times during the day were similar among species. Ameiva ameiva were in more open microhabitats and had higher body temperatures compared with the two species of Kentropyx. Microhabitat overlaps were low and not significantly different from simulations based on Monte Carlo analysis. Grasshoppers, crickets, and spiders were important in the diets of all three species and many relatively abundant prey were infrequently eaten (e.g., ants). Dietary overlaps were most similar between the two species of Kentropyx even though microhabitat overlaps were relatively low. A Monte Carlo analysis on prey types revealed that dietary overlaps were higher at all ranks than simulated overlaps indicating that use of prey is not random. Although prey size was correlated with lizard body size, there were no species differences in adjusted prey size. A. ameiva ate more prey items at a given body size than either species of Kentropyx. Body size varies among species, with A. ameiva being the largest and K. altamazonica the smallest. The two species of Kentropyx are most distant morphologically, with A. ameiva intermediate. The most distant species morphologically are the most similar in terms of prey types. A morphological analysis including 15 species from four genera revealed patterns of covariation that reflected phylogenetic affinities (i.e., taxonomic patterns are evident). A cluster analysis revealed that A. ameiva, K. pelviceps, and K. altamazonica were in the same morphological group and that within that group, A. ameiva differed from the rest of the species. In addition, K. pelviceps and K. altamazonica were distinguishable from other species of Kentropyx based on morphology.

Notes: Abstract  The emergence of drug resistance during tumor chemotherapy is one of the main problems associated with cancer treatment, particularly with cisplatin (cis-DDP). In the hope of overcoming this problem, various cis-DDP-derived compounds have been synthesized, and their pharmacological activity was compared with that of cis-DDP. In this paper we report on studies on the cytotoxic activity induced by cis-diamminechloro-[2-(diethylamino)ethyl-4-aminobenzoate, N 4]-chlorideplatinum(II) monohydrochloride monohydrate (DPR), a new complex of platinum containing procaine. All experiments were carried out on murine leukemic cells, which were either sensitive (L1210) or resistant (L1210/DDP) to cis-DDP. A tetrazolium dye (MTT) assay conducted 5 days after a 2-h exposure of cells to both drugs was utilized to determine the resistance factor (RF) of L1210/DDP cells as compared with the sensitive wild-type cells. Drug accumulation and efflux, together with the amount of platinum bound to DNA, were also investigated. The activity of DPR on sensitive cells was not significantly different from that of cis-DDP. Conversely, DPR was 4.3 times more effective than cis-DDP on resistant cells. A decreased drug accumulation is one of the mechanisms of resistance to cis-DDP of L1210/DDP cells. However, DPR accumulation was not significantly different in sensitive and resistant L1210 cells. Under culture conditions that yielded similar intracellular platinum concentrations, treatment with DPR produced significantly greater DNA platination than did treatment with cis-DDP in both cell lines. No difference in efflux was observed between L1210 and L1210/DDP cells exposed to either cis-DDP or DPR. Our results show that in parental cells, DPR is as potent as cis-DDP on a molar basis, and it is also minimally cross-resistant with cis-DDP in L1210/DDP cells. A direct implication of our results is that DPR could be useful in those human tumors showing a mechanism of resistance similar to that of L1210/ DDP cells.

Notes: Abstract Background: Multiple-phase helical computed tomography (CT) has been regarded as the method of choice in the evaluation of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treated by nonsurgical procedures. The aim of this article was to report our experience in the assessment of nodular and parenchymal changes recognizable after various percutaneous ablation therapies. Methods: We reviewed the studies of 116 consecutive patients with HCC treated with multisession percutaneous ethanol injection (56 patients, 98 nodules), single-session percutaneous ethanol injection (14 patients, 31 nodules), radiofrequency thermal ablation (32 patients, 48 nodules), and interstitial laser photocoagulation (14 patients, 25 nodules). CT had been performed 3–28 days after the last session (mean = 18 days) with unenhanced helical acquisition and with contrast-enhanced double- or triple-phase helical acquisition. Results: Persisting neoplastic tissue was identified within 54.5% of the nodules. It was located centrally in 4.5% of these nodules, peripherally in 11%, and eccentrically in 84.5%, and its shape was crescent in 58%, globular in 24.5%, and other in 16%. On arterial phase scans, viable tumor was hyperdense in 97% of the lesions and isodense in 3%; on portal phase scans, the tumor was hyperdense in 20%, isodense in 28%, and hypodense in 52%; on delayed phase scans, the tumor was consistently hypodense. Tumor necrosis was always hypodense on contrast-enhanced scans. On unenhanced images, 7.4% of the nodules were undetectable. Nodule diameter appeared as unchanged in 53% of the nodules and as larger in 47%; its shape was unchanged in 54% and modified in 46%; its margins were unchanged in 36% and modified in 64%. A rim of granulation tissue was detected around 15% of the nodules, and a perilesional transient attenuation difference was detected in 21%. Perihepatic effusion was seen in 13% of the patients, segmental biliary duct dilation and local atrophy each in 9%, arterioportal fistula in 6%, portal vein thrombosis, subcapsular collection and pleural effusion each in 7%, hepatic infarction in 5%, and inferior vena cava thrombosis in 2%. Conclusion: Percutaneous ablation of HCC may cause several changes. Knowledge of their CT appearance is mandatory to correctly assess and manage this tumor.
Notes: Abstract Thermotropic mesophases can be detected by the light scattering properties of these phases. This article deals with a rapid scan technique for the detection and characterization of these mesophases by measuring light scattering as a function of temperature. From the number of compounds studied it is apparent that the method allows for a rapid and reasonably precise determination of transition temperatures. In addition, the method is found to be useful in the characterization of mesophases, in particular the nematic phase.

Notes: Abstract Background: Cisplatin (DDP) and carboplatin (CBDCA) are two of the mosteffective drugs in a locoregional approach. Since simultaneous combinedtreatment with intrapleural DDP and CBDCA has not been reported in humans, weinvestigated its use in patients with malignant effusions, focusing onpharmacokinetics. Patients and methods: The pharmacokinetics of DDP and CBDCA were studiedin 10 patients with malignant pleural effusion treated intrapleurally with acombination of DDP (60 mg/m2) and CBDCA (270mg/m2) and in additional patients who received the same dosesof drugs administered intravenously as single agents or in combination.Platinum (Pt) species originating from DDP (metabolites plus unchanged DDP)and intact CBDCA in plasma and pleural fluid ultrafiltrates were measured bymeans of high performance liquid chromatography and atomic absorptionspectrometry. Results: Both in the plasma and pleural fluid, the total levels of free Ptrepresented the additive result of the individual concentrations of CBDCA andPt-species derived from DDP. After intrapleural combination, highpleural-plasma ratios of the peak concentrations and AUCs were observed bothfor CBDCA and DDP-derived Pt species, highlighting a distinct localpharmacological advantage. However, the Pt species originating from DDP wereabsorbed more rapidly from the pleural cavity than CBDCA (Ka= 86 × 10-3 vs. 37 ×10-3 min-1, P 〈 0.05).Intrapleural combination of CBDCA and DDP produced therapeutic plasma levelsof reactive (free) DDP species and increased the extent of their residencetime (MRT) compared with single intravenous DDP treatment [peak concentration:1.1 ± 0.1 (SD) vs. 1.6 ± 0.2 µg/ml; MRT: 5.2 ± 1.9vs. 0.5 ± 0.06 h]. Furthermore, the plasma AUC of free CBDCA afterintrapleural combined treatment (2.1 ± 0.5 mg/ml × min) wassimilar to that after intravenous administration of CBDCA alone (2.1 ±0.2 mg/ml × min). The intrapleural treatment was well tolerated by allpatients. Toxicity consisted of mild nausea and vomiting (grade 1–2according to the WHO scale) in four patients. Myelosuppression (grade1–2) was remarkable only in two heavily pretreated patients. No evidenceof recurrence of the pleural effusion was observed in six patients (completeresponse), while an asymptomatic minimal fluid reaccumulation not requiringdrainage (partial response) was observed in four patients. Conclusions: The pharmacologic results seem to exclude a pharmacokineticinteraction between CBDCA and DDP and suggest that a dose of CBDCA 2-foldhigher than that used in this study associated intrapleurally with 60mg/m2 DDP could induce an acceptable and predictablemyelosuppresion.
