Notizen: The taxonomic placement of Spanish isolates of Gremmeniella abietina var. abietina (Gaa) (race and biotype) was determined, for the first time, using RAPD markers and comparison of RAPD patterns for Spanish isolates and those originating from different regions of Europe and North America. Fifteen Spanish isolates of Gaa were isolated from recently dead shoots of 10 Pinus halepensis trees. Additionally, 17 isolates of Gaa from Canada, Finland, Switzerland and the USA, previously characterized according to race and biotype, were used. Five primers, previously reported to yield readable, reproducible and polymorphic fragments, were used in PCR reactions. The results showed that the Spanish isolates represent the European race and not the Alpine or northern biotypes. Spanish isolates appear to be clearly separated from all other biotypes within the EU race and preliminary data suggest that Spanish isolates have low genetic variability.

Notizen: Summary Multiple shoots were induced from nodal segments of mature trees of Ulmus pumila L. on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with benzyladenine (BA). Further multiple shoots were obtained from nodal segments taken from in vitro proliferated shoots when cultured in MS medium containing 0.5 mg.l−1 BA. Rooting of the shoots was achieved on half or full strength MS medium or in MS medium supplemented with 0.1 mg.l−1 naphtaleneacetic acid (NAA). Rooted plantlets were able to resume independent growth after a short period of acclimatization.

Notizen: Summary Cell suspension cultures of a Ceratocystis ulmi-resistant (Ulmus pumila) and a -susceptible elm (U.campestris) were established from leaf callus tissue. Treatment of cultures with spores of C.ulmi induced a large increase in the activity of phenylalanine ammonialyase, only in the cells of the resistant species U.pumila with a maximum after 24 h. Inoculated U.pumila cells also excreted a red unidentified chemical into the culture medium. Neither responses were induced in inoculated U.campestris cultures. The results are discussed in relation to the development of the elm cell culture system as a model for studying the differential biochemical mechanisms of disease resistance in elms.

Notizen: Abstract Two small estuaries, the Eden Estuary of eastern Scotland and the Ria de Foz of north west Spain, are compared. The former was glaciated during the Pleistocene, the latter was not. These water bodies are macrotidal, of similar size, entrance morphology and advanced state of sedimentary infill. There are, however, major differences in their sedimentary dynamics partly as a result of anthropogenic interference. A training wall partially confines the main channel of the Ria de Foz, whereas the Eden Estuary lacks comparable structures. Prior to the extension of the Foz wall, the rate of migration of a spit at the mouth of the ria was up to one order of magnitude greater than that of a similar spit in the Eden Estuary. Following completion of the wall, the rate of spit erosion in the Ria de Foz increased to two orders of magnitude greater than that of natural processes in the Eden. A beach nourishment scheme at Foz, relocating sediment deposited within the Ria, has succeeded in stabilising the spit and substantially reducing erosion. Relative stability of land and sea may have existed over the last 5,000 years at Foz but not at the mouth of the Eden, where isostatic uplift has exceeded sea level rise. The requisite stability for complete sedimentary infill at Foz may not exist owing to the predicted worldwide rise of sea level due to global warming. The rise of sea and land levels around the Eden Estuary are now believed to be counterbalanced, providing the necessary geological conditions for complete sedimentary infill.

Beschreibung: In the framework of the OECD/NEA project on Benchmark for Uncertainty Analysis in Modeling (UAM) for Design, Operation, and Safety Analysis of LWRs, several approaches and codes are being used to deal with the exercises proposed in Phase I, “Specifications and Support Data for Neutronics Cases.” At UPM, our research group treats these exercises with sensitivity calculations and the “sandwich formula” to propagate cross-section uncertainties. Two different codes are employed to calculate the sensitivity coefficients of to cross sections in criticality calculations: MCNPX-2.7e and SCALE-6.1. The former uses the Differential Operator Technique and the latter uses the Adjoint-Weighted Technique. In this paper, the main results for exercise I-2 “Lattice Physics” are presented for the criticality calculations of PWR. These criticality calculations are done for a TMI fuel assembly at four different states: HZP-Unrodded, HZP-Rodded, HFP-Unrodded, and HFP-Rodded. The results of the two different codes above are presented and compared. The comparison proves a good agreement between SCALE-6.1 and MCNPX-2.7e in uncertainty that comes from the sensitivity coefficients calculated by both codes. Differences are found when the sensitivity profiles are analysed, but they do not lead to differences in the uncertainty.

Beschreibung: Background The management of advanced neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) has recently changed. We assessed the activity of pazopanib after failure of other systemic treatments in advanced NETs. Methods This was a multicenter, open-label, phase II study evaluating pazopanib as a single agent in advanced NETs (PAZONET study). The clinical benefit rate (CBR) at 6 months was the primary end point. Translational correlation of radiological response and progression-free survival (PFS) with circulating and tissue biomarkers was also evaluated. Results A total of 44 patients were enrolled. Twenty-five patients (59.5%) were progression-free at 6 months (4 partial responses, 21 stable diseases) with a median PFS of 9.5 months [95% confidence interval (CI) 4.8–14.1]. The CBR varied according to prior therapy received, with 73%, 60% and 25% in patients treated with prior multitarget inhibitors, prior mTOR inhibitors and both agents, respectively. A nonsignificant increase in PFS was observed in patients presenting lower baseline circulating tumor cell (CTC) counts (9.1 versus 5.8 months; P = 0.22) and in those with decreased levels of soluble-vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (sVEGFR-2) (12.6 versus 9.1 months; P = 0.067). A trend toward reduced survival was documented in patients with VEGFR3 rs307821 and rs307826 missense polymorphisms [hazard ratio (HR): 12.3; 95% CI 1.09–139.2; P = 0.042 and HR: 6.9; 95% CI 0.96–49.9; P = 0.055, respectively]. Conclusions Pazopanib showed clinical activity in patients with advanced NETs regardless of previous treatments. Additionally, CTCs, soluble-s VEFGR-2 and VEGFR3 gene polymorphisms constitute potential biomarkers for selecting patients for pazopanib (NCT01280201). Clinical trial number NCT01280201.
