    Description: In the context of global warming, the present study aimed to identify at which stages the embryos of the holobenthic species Octopus maya are the most sensitive to temperature. We used temperature as a tool to induce minimum (TIMR-min: 11°C) and maximum metabolic rates (TIMR-max: 30°C) on embryos that came from three wild females caught off Sisal harbor (21°10'N, 90°02'W; Yucatán, Mexico) in March 2016. Higher metabolic rate values were recorded at stages XV and XVI, when the three hearts start beating, compared to stage X, when organogenesis begins. The factorial metabolic scope (FMS = TIMR-max ? TIMR-min) was higher at stages XV and XVI than the more mature stages, establishing stage XVII as the most vulnerable. High temperature exposure applied only during the earliest developmental stages (until stage XV) could have adaptive advantages if spawning occurs during hot waves in tropical coastal zones where the embryos are incubated or used for aquaculture purposes by shortening the time before hatching without physiological costs.

    Description: The damselfish Neopomacentrus cyanomos were collected twice under an oil-loading platform 1.5 km from the Cayo Arcas reef (20.21°N, −91.98°W), in August 2016 (n = 16) and August 2017 (n = 30). All fish sampled in August 2016 were submitted to an acute-thermal-decline protocol (−4 °C over a period of 1 h, and maintaining the temperature for 23 h), while the ones collected in August were acclimated 45 days at 18, 20, 22, and 26 °C. Finally, half of the acclimated fish were submitted to a high temperature challenge to assess the effect of cold thermal acclimation on heat tolerance scope. Data of routine metabolic rates, blood metabolites and biochemical stress indicators from each fish are provided in this data set.

    Notes: The present study investigated whether the ‘psychological threat’ induced by sensory contact with an aggressive conspecific would be a sufficient factor in inducing behavioural and physiological disturbances. Repeated sensory contact with an aggressive mouse (social threat) in a partitioned cage was compared with repeated exposure to a novel partitioned cage in male NMRI mice. We first examined parameters of stress responsiveness (body weight, plasma corticosterone levels, frequency of self-grooming and defecation). The temperature and physical activity responses to stress were also recorded during and after the 4 weeks of stress using radiotelemetry. Finally, cognitivo-emotional performance was assessed after acute stress and 2 and 4 weeks of stress by measuring decision making, sequential alternation performance and behaviour in the elevated T-maze. Social threat had a greater impact than novel cage exposure on most parameters of stress responsiveness, although mice did not habituate to either stressor. Social threat rapidly led to an anticipatory rise in core body temperature and physical activity before the scheduled stress sessions. Such anticipation developed within the first week and persisted for 9 days after ending the stress procedure. Some memory impairment in the sequential alternation test was found in stressed mice, independent of the stressor. After 4 weeks of stress, inhibitory avoidance in the elevated T-maze was enhanced in socially stressed mice and reduced in novel cage mice. The sustained anticipation of stress in the social threat group preceded aversive responding. It remains to be established whether anticipation contributes to the development of aversive responses.

    Notes: Summary Copolymers containing vinyltrimethylsilane and vinyltrimethoxysilane with N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone at different compositions were synthesized and characterized. The reactivity ratios was estimated by using the classical Fineman-Ross and Kelen Tüdos linear fitting procedures. These parameters were also estimated through a computer program based on nonlinear minimization algorithm, starting from the r1 and r2 values obtained by the former procedures. The analysis of the results allow us to interpret the reactivity behaviour of these polymers in terms of the relative reactivity of the substiuents. The effect of the chemical structure of the polymer side group is discussed in terms of the different contributions to the stabilization of the radical intermediates.

    Notes: Abstract Parvovirus B19 has been associated with different diseases. However, hepatic involvement has rarely been reported in adult patients with parvovirus B19 infection. Herein, we report two adult patients with hepatic dysfunction associated with acute parvovirus B19 infection. We believe that hepatic involvement in the setting of parvovirus B19 infection is more common than suspected, and that antibodies against this agent should be routinely measured in patients with hepatic dysfunction of unclear etiology.

    Notes: Abstract The present study was undertaken to ascertain the role of smooth muscles and pericytes in the microcirculation during hyperperfusion and hypoperfusion following ischemia in rats. Paired external carotids, the pterygopalatine branch of the internal carotids and the basilar artery were exposed and divided. Reversible inflatable occluders were placed around the common carotids. After 24 h, the unanesthetized rat underwent 10-min ischemia by inflating the occluders. Continuous cortical cerebral blood flow (c-CBF) was monitored by laser Doppler flowmetry. The measured c-CBF was below 20% of control (P 〈 0.001) during ischemia. A c-CBF of 227.5 ± 54.1% (P 〈 0.001) was obtained during reperfusion hyperemia. A c-CBF of 59.7 ± 8.8% (P 〈 0.001) occurred at the nadir of postischemic hypoperfusion, and this was followed by a second hyperemia. The cytoarchitecture of the vascular smooth muscles and pericytes was assessed by scanning electron microscopy. Samples were prepared using a KOH-collagenase digestion method. In control rats, arteriolar muscle cells showed smooth surfaces. Capillary pericytes were closely apposed to the endothelium. Immediately after reperfusion, transverse membrane creases were observed on the smooth muscle surfaces. During maximal hyperemia the creases disappeared. When c-CBF started to decrease the creases became visible again. Throughout the postischemic hypoperfusion the creases remained. Capillary endothelial walls became tortuous in the late phase of hypoperfusion. During the second hyperemia most arteriolar muscle cells showed smooth surfaces. Some pericytes appeared to have migrated from the vascular wall. The morphological changes of smooth muscle membranes suggest that they are related to specific perfusional disturbances during ischemia and reperfusion.

    Notes: Abstract A 52-year-old man sought medical advice for sudden onset of intermittent claudication of the left lower limb after 50 meters walking. Aortography documented a dissecting aneurysm limited to the left common iliac artery. After resection, a prosthetic graft was inserted. Pathology showed that the cause of the dissection was atheroma. Spontaneous dissecting aneurysm of the common iliac artery is rare. Rupture represents the principal hazard. A high index of suspicion should lead to diagnosis as soon as signs of lower limb ischemia, occasionally transient, appear.
