    Description: A high-resolution integrated stratigraphy is presented for the Late Quaternary in the southern-eastern Tyrrhenian Sea. It is based on calcareous plankton taxa (planktonic foraminifera and nannoplankton) distribution, d18OGlobigerinoides ruber record, tephrostratigraphy and radiometric dating methods (210Pb and 137Cs, AMS 14C) for a composite sediment core (from the top to the bottom, C90-1m, C90 and C836) from the continental shelf of the Salerno Gulf. High sedimentation rates from ca 1 cm/100 y for the early Holocene, to 3.45 cm/100 y for the middle Holocene to 8.78 cm/100 y from late Holocene and to 20 cm/100 y for the last 600 AD, make this area an ideal marine archive of secular paleoclimate changes. Quantitative distributional trend in planktonic foraminifera identify seven known (1Fe7F) eco-biozones, and several auxiliary bioevents of high potential for Mediterranean biostratigraphic correlation. Recognised were: the acme distribution of Neogloboquadrina pachyderma r.c. between 10.800 0.400 ka BP and 5.500 0.347 ka BP, a strong increase in abundance of Globorotalia truncatulinoides r.c. and l.c. at 5.500 0.347 ka BP and at 4.571 0.96 ka BP, respectively, an acme interval of Globigerinoides quadrilobatus (between 3.702 0.048 ka BP and 2.70 0.048 ka BP) and the acme/paracme intervals of T. quinqueloba (acme between 3.350 0.054 ka BP and 1.492 0.016 ka BP; paracme between 1.492 0.016 ka BP and 0.657 0.025 ka BP; acme beginning 0.657 0.025 ka BP). These results, integrated with trends of selected calcareous nannofossil species (Florisphaera profunda, Brarudosphaera bigelowii, Gephyrocapsa oceanica and Emiliania huxleyi) and d18OG. ruber signature, are consistent with the most important pre-Holocene and early Holocene paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic phases i.e., the BöllingeAllerod, the Younger Dryas and the time interval of Sapropel S1 deposition in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. These features revealed the high potential of this shallow water environment for high-resolution stratigraphy and correlation for the western Mediterranean. In addition, the chemical characterization of seven tephra layers supplied further data about the age and the dispersal area of some well-known Campi Flegrei explosive events, inferring the possible occurrence of explosive activity at Vesuvius around the middle of the 6th century, and contributing to refine the tephrostratigraphic framework for the last 15 ka in the south-eastern Tyrrhenian Sea.

    Description: Continuous marine successions covering the Middle Miocene Climate Transition (MMCT; ∼15–13.7 Ma) are scarce and the lack of a high-resolution magnetobiostratigraphic framework hampers the construction of astronomically tuned age models for this time interval. The La Vedova High Cliff section, exposed along the coast of the Cònero Riviera near Ancona (Italy), is one of the few Mediterranean sections covering the critical time interval of the MMCT. Starting from an initial magnetobiostratigraphic age model, a robust astronomical tuning was constructed for the interval between 14.2 and 13.5 Ma, using geochemical element data and time series analysis. A shift in δ18O of bulk sediment towards heavier values occurs between ∼13.92 and 13.78 Ma and could be related to the Mi3b oxygen isotope event, which reflects the rapid expansion of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet in the middle Miocene. The onset of the CM6 carbon excursion is reflected in the bulk record by a rapid increase in δ13C at 13.86 Ma. Our results confirm the proposition that these events coincide with a 405-kyr minimum in eccentricity and a node in obliquity related to the ∼1.2 Myr cycle. From 13.8 Ma onwards, distinct quadruplet cycles containing sapropelitic sediments were deposited. This may suggest a causal connection between the main middle Miocene cooling step and the onset of sapropel formation in the Mediterranean.

    Description: An integrated magneto-biostratigraphic study, based on calcareous nannofossils, was carried out on the Eocene uppermost marine deposits of the southeastern Pyrenean foreland basin. The study was performed along six sections of the upper portion of Igualada Formation, cropping out in the Vic area. Common late Middle/Upper Eocene nannofossil assemblages allow recognizing, within a normal magnetozone or immediately below, the FO of Istmolithus recurvus, which identifies the base of NP19 Zone, in the Priabonian. This event occurs within C16n.2n magnetozone in several oceanic and Mediterranean sections, which allows the correlation of the normal magnetozone in the Vic area to chron C16n.2n. This challenges previous magnetostratigraphic interpretations in the Vic area that correlated the uppermost marine sediments to chron C17n. The estimated age for the FO of I. recurvus is 36 Ma and collectively with the magnetostratigraphic data indicates that the uppermost marine sediments in the basin are of Priabonian age. The new results indicate that the entire chronology of the marine strata needs reassessment. The thickness of chron C16n.2n varies from 45 m in the Collsuspina area (southern sector) to about 270-290 m in the Sant Bartomeu del Grau area (northern sector), which is indicative of a marked asymmetry in the basin deposition.

    Description: We report on the paleomagnetism of 34 sites from lower Oligocene–middle Miocene sediments exposed in the Tertiary Piedmont Basin (TPB, northern Italy). The TPB is formed by a thick (4000 m) and virtually undeformed sedimentary succession unconformably lying upon Alpine nappes decapitated by extensional exhumation, which in turn are tectonically stacked over the Adriatic foreland. Paleomagnetic directions from 23 (mostly Oligocene) sites were chronologically framed using new biostratigraphic evidence from calcareous nannoplankton. Our data, along with published paleomagnetic results, show that the TPB rotated 50 counterclockwise with respect to Africa in Aquitanian-Serravallian times. The rotation was likely driven by underneath nappe stacking and was synchronous with (further) bending of the Alpine chain. Both the rotation magnitude and its timing are similar to those documented for the Corsica-Sardinia microplate. Therefore the formation of the western Alpine arc (or at least part of its present-day curvature) occurred during the rollback of the Apenninic slab and related back-arc spreading of the Liguro-Provenc¸al Basin and drift of the Corsica-Sardinia block. This suggests a common dynamics driving both the Alpine and the Apennine slab motions. Paleomagnetic data also document that the Adriatic plate has undergone no paleomagnetic rotation since mid-late Miocene times. Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility data suggests that the TPB, an enigmatic basin arising from a controversial tectonic setting, formed in an extensional regime characterized by a stretching direction approximately orthogonal to the main trend of the underlying chain.

    Description: We report a biomonitoring study of air pollution in Rome based on the magnetic properties of tree leaves. In a first step, magnetic properties of leaves from different tree species from the same location were compared. It was observed that leaves of evergreen species, like Quercus ilex, present much higher magnetic intensities than those of deciduous species, like Platanus sp., suggesting that leaves accumulate magnetic pollutants during their whole lifespan. In a second step, leaves from Q. ilex and Platanus sp. trees, both very common in Rome, have been used to monitor traffic emission pollution in two different periods. A Platanus sp. sampling campaign was undertaken in October 2001, at the end of the seasonal vegetational cycle, and 5 Q. ilex monthly sampling campaigns from April to August 2002. The strong difference observed in the magnetic susceptibility from leaves collected in green areas and roads allowed the realization of detailed pollution distribution maps from the south of Rome. Magnetic properties indicate that high concentrations and relatively larger grain-sizes of magnetic particles are observed in trees located along roads with high vehicle traffic and in the vicinity of railways. The decrease in concentration and grain size of magnetic particles with distance from the roadside confirms that magnetic properties of leaves are related to air pollution from vehicle emissions. The results indicate that a magnetic survey of tree leaves, which is relatively rapid and inexpensive, may be used in addition to the classical air quality monitoring systems to identify and delineate high-polluted areas in urban environments.

    Description: The Montalbano Jonico (MJ) section, cropping out in Southern Italy, represents a potential candidate to define the Lower/Middle Pleistocene boundary and it has been proposed as a suitable Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) of the Ionian Stage (Middle Pleistocene). The MJ section is the only continuous benthic and planktonic δ18O on-land reference in the Mediterranean area for the Mid-Pleistocene transition, spanning an interval between about 1240 and 645 ka. Combined biostratigraphy and sapropel chronology, tephra stratigraphy and complete high-resolution benthic and planktonic foraminiferal stable oxygen isotope records already provide a firm chronostratigraphic framework for the MJ section. However, magnetostratigraphy was still required to precisely locate the Brunhes-Matuyama transition and to mark the GSSP for the Ionian stage. We carried out a palaeomagnetic study of a subsection (Ideale section) of the MJ composite section, sampling 61 oriented cores from 56 stratigraphic levels spread over a ca. 80-m-thick stratigraphic interval that correlates to the oxygen isotopic stage 19 and should therefore include the Brunhes-Matuyama reversal. The palaeomagnetic data indicate a stable and almost single-component natural remanent magnetization (NRM). A characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM) was clearly identified by stepwise demagnetization of the NRM. The ChRM declination values vary around 0◦ and the ChRM inclination around the expected value (59◦) for a geocentric axial dipole field at the sampling locality. This result indicates that the section has been remagnetized during the Brunhes Chron. A preliminary study of 27 additional not azimuthally oriented hand samples, collected at various levels from other parts of the MJ composite section, indicates that all the samples are of normal polarity and demonstrates that the remagnetization is widespread across the whole exposed stratigraphic sequence. A series of specific rock magnetic techniques were then applied to investigate the nature of the main magnetic carrier in the study sediments, and they suggest that the main magnetic mineral in the MJ section is the iron sulphide greigite (Fe3S4). Scanning electron microscope observations and elemental microanalysis reveal that greigite occurs both as individual euhedral crystals and in iron sulphides aggregates filling voids in the clay matrix. Therefore, we infer that the remagnetization of the section is due to the late-diagenetic growth of greigite under reducing conditions, most likely resulting in the almost complete dissolution of the original magnetic minerals. Iron sulphide formation in the MJ section can be linked to migration of mineralized fluids. Our inferred timing of the remagnetization associated with greigite growth represents the longest remanence acquisition delay documented in greigite-bearing clays of the Italian peninsula so far.

    Description: This paper is aimed to give new insights useful to enlighten the relationships between the Alpine Units (Alpine Corsica Auctt.) outcropping in the NE sector of Corsica and hence helpful to reconstruct the geodynamic history of this sector of the alpine belt. In Corsica, the Alpine Units consists of a stack of (frequently laminated) oceanic and continental units which overlying the Variscan hasement (Hercynian Corsica Auctt.) of the Corso-European foreland. In some areas, the pile of the Alpine Units is still a puzzle and both lithostratigraphy and age of some units are still debatable. In the Omessa area, between Corte and Ponte Leccia, the tectonic pile includes the Tenda Unit (cfr. Tenda Massif Auctt.), the Caporalino-Sant'Angelo Unit, the Santa Lucia Nappe and the Schistes lustrks s.1. Among these units, the type of deposit and the age of the succession assigned to the Caporalino-Sant'Angelo Unit is still matter of debate. Earliest geologist consider the Caporalino-Sant'Angelo unit as a continuous sedimentary succession which spans in age from Lower Jurassic to Eocene. Later, some of these authors confirmed the continuity of the sedimentation of the Lower Jurassic to Eocene deposits assigned to the Caporalino-Sant'Angelo Unit and interpret the Caporalino limestone as a shallow-water platform deposit or a pelagic succession characterized by carbonate platform input. In contrast with this interpretation, the Caporalino-Sant'Angelo Unit was considered as coarse grained deposits with huge olistoliths sedimented in a distinct Eocene basin. Aim of this paper is to improve the lithoshatigraphy and the biostratigraphy of the Caporalino-S.Angelo Unit in order to the make clear the type of deposit and the age of this (Alpine) unit and to suggest the palaeogeographic location of its sedimentary basin. Based on a new geological mapping of the Corte-Pontee Leccia area and the lithostratigraphy of the three key composite. sections, the Caporalino-Sant'Angelo Unit consists of three coarse-grained clastic intervals and eight levels. The lower interval is composed of hreccias conglomerates and sandstones. The middle interval mainly consists of hreccias conglomerates and olithosliths (e.g. Caporalino Limestone); in the upper part of this interval are mark and breccias with clasts of Caporalino Limestone. Fine-grained sandstones with pelitic intercalation and rare conglomeratic beds characterize the upper interval. According to the recovered microfossil (calcareous nannofossils and foraminifera) assemblages the entire Caporalino-Sant'Angelo Unit is Early to Middle Eocene in age. Consequently, the previous model of a continuous Jurassic- Eocene stratigraphic succession is no longer valid and thj following scenario could he outlined: 1) during the Early-Middle Eocene the Caporalino-S.Angeh unit settled in an siliciclastic basin which received coarse graineb deposits such as breccias and conglomerates, olistoshomes and olistoliths (mainly composed by Upper Jurassic platform limestones) and sandstones and intercalation of silty mark and conglomerates, 2) the coarse-grained clastic sediments and the Upper Jurassic calcareous olistoliths , could have an inner place of origin (they probably represent the remnants of a carbonate platform emplaced over the Corso hasement); 3) consequently the Caporalino Sant'Angelo Unit was a foredeep basin, situated between the outer margin represented by the European foreland, and the inner margin, constituted yet by the corso hasement and its calcareous cover, 4) later the Santa Lucia Nappe and the Schistes lushb were thrusted on the Caporalino-S.Angelo basin.

    Description: An integrated high-resolution magnetobiocyclostratigraphy including radioisotopic dating and astronomical tuning is presented for the interval between 15.29 and 14.17 Ma in the marine La Vedova section in northern Italy. The natural remanent magnetization is carried by the iron sulphide greigite and the resultant magnetostratigraphy can be correlated straightforwardly to the interval ranging from C5Bn.2n to C5ADn in the Astronomically Tuned Neogene Time Scale (ATNTS2004). Spectral analysis on high-resolution magnetic susceptibility and geochemical proxy records in the depth domain and, using our magnetobiostratigraphic age model, in the time domain demonstrate that the various scales of cyclicity in the section are related to astronomical climate forcing. Starting from our initial age model, larger-scale cycles were first tuned to eccentricity. This first-order tuning was followed by tuning the basic cycle to precession and boreal summer insolation using inferred phase relations between maxima in Ca/Al, redox-sensitive elements and Ba, and minima in magnetic susceptibility, and maxima in precession and minima in obliquity and boreal summer insolation. Our astronomical ages for reversal boundaries are supported by analysis of sea floor spreading rates and should replace the existing ages in the ATNTS2004 lacking direct astronomical control. Two major steps in the geochemical proxy records, astronomically dated at 15.074 and 14.489 Ma, coincide with abrupt changes in sedimentation rate, and are the result of the combined effect of the ∼400-kyr eccentricity cycle superimposed upon a longer-term climatic or tectonic induced trend.

    Description: We propose a revision of the calcareous plankton biostratigraphy of the upper Burdigalian/early Langhian interval (Early/MiddleMiocene) of theDSDPHole 608 succession (northeastern Atlantic Ocean), one of themost complete open-ocean Miocene sequence. We detected a set of calcareous plankton events through a 26m thick succession (320-346 mbsf), spanning the interval from 14.969 to 17.268 Ma, chronologically constrained through paleomagnetic and astrochronological data. “Standard” bioevents were tested and in some cases they resulted poorly applicable to the investigated succession. Conversely, the quantitative biostratigraphic analysis highlighted additional biohorizons (Helicosphaera ampliaperta Last CommonOccurrence, Sphenolithus heteromorphus Paracme Interval, Paragloborotalia siakensisAcme “a”) considered till now restricted to theMediterranean region. This results in a better applicability of Mediterranean zonal schemes, providing a higher biostratigraphic resolution. Our results point out strict affinity between Atlantic and Mediterranean successions in Early/MiddleMiocene. Thus, in the perspective of establishing the Langhian GSSP, that according to the historical criterion must be located in the Mediterranean region, our results provide significant correlation tools between Mediterranean and open-ocean successions.
