Notizen: Summary The spatial distribution of light in luminescent mycelia of Armillaria mellea and Panus stipticus grown on agar plates was examined by image intensification microscopy. Although, at any instant of time, not all parts of the mycelia emitted light, all kinds of hyphae—primary, secondary, tertiary, aerial, submersed, or superficial—were observed to emit light sometime during the lifetime of the colony. In the individual hypha, light emission was confined to a segment removed from the growing point. The growing point was dark so long as it remained a growing point.

Notizen: Summary The fission yeast, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, a homothallic haploid strain NCYC 132, was induced to flocculate and conjugate to facilitate the study of the ascosporogenesis. It is found that two nuclei are formed during meiosis I and these nuclei divide again during meiosis II. The forespore membrane emerges at the beginning of meiosis II, elongates without fragmentation to enclose the nucleus and other cytoplasmic organelles, including mitochondria and ER. Meiosis occurs without fragmentation of the nuclear membrane. Immediately after the enclosure of the nucleus, the forespore membrane is resolved into two separate membranes. The inner one appears to become the spore plasmalemma and the outer one, if it persists, becomes a limiting membrane of the spore wall. In some cases, the outer membrane is seen to be ruptured. Spore wall materials deposite in the space between the inner and outer membranes.

Notizen: Abstract Iron catalysts supported on ZSM-5 zeolites of a wide range of silica-to-alumina ratios (29-∞) have been prepared and tested in carbon monoxide hydrogenation. The crystalline phases of the catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction and their acidity by infrared spectroscopy of adsorbed pyridine. The catalytic tests were conducted at 533 K, an overall pressure of 21 bar and a feed ratio CO/H2 close to 1. It was found that the selectivity to light olefins (C2–C4) increases in parallel with the increase of the Si/Al ratio of the zeolite. This was explained in terms of the decrease in Brønsted acidity of the catalysts. As a consequence, very high olefin selectivities can be achieved by decreasing the number of strong acid sites in the zeolite structure, but at the expense of high oxygenate formation.

Notizen: Abstract Carbon monoxide hydrogenation was studied over partially substituted copper-containing LaTi1−xCuxO3 oxides and on copper supported on La2O3. The unsubstituted (x = 0) oxide was weakly active for CO hydrogenation, whereas all the other oxides were more active and exhibited high selectivity to methanol. Particularly, for substitutions x = 0.5–0.6, where the perovskite structure was observed, CO conversions close to 22% and selectivity close to 80% were found. Cu/La2O3 was, however, less active and yielded CO2 and hydrocarbons as the major products. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy it was determined that under reaction conditions copper exists as reduced species. The L3VV X-ray induced Auger transition at 1849.2 eV observed for a representative LaMn0.5Cu0.5O3 catalyst prereduced and used in CO hydrogenation at 573 K, suggests that Cu+ species dominates in spent catalyst. These Cu+ species are believed to be stable under reaction conditions in the perovskite structure, only a slight Cu enrichment occurs on the topmost layer of catalysts.

Notizen: Abstract Homothallic cultures of Schizosaccharomyces pombe, anaerobically grown to stationary phase in broth at 32°C, were induced by aeration to flocculate. Flocculation was followed by copulation, conjugation, zygote formation, meiosis and sporulation. Cultures grown to stationary phase at 32°C and then aerated at 37°C did not sporulate. Grown to stationary phase at 37°C, cultures were not immediately inducible when aerated at 32°C. To identify which events in the developmental sequence were thermosensitive, we grew and induced cultures at 32°C and then shifted them at various times to 37°C. We observed the following events to be thermosensitive: development of respiratory sufficiency, readiness (inducibility of a culture within 1 h), flocculation induction, copulation, conjugation and early sporulation (including meiosis). Respiration, flocculation and spore maturation were thermoresistant. Conjugation-induced lysis and post-developmental deflocculation were enhanced at 37°C.

Notizen: Summary Exposed to iodine vapors, colonies of a homothallic strain of Schizosaccharomyces pombe were of two classes: P, with many black streaks, and d, with scarcely any. Contiguous P and d colonies, but not contiguous P colonies nor contiguous d colonies, gave the iodine junction reaction, a black line along the common boundary of two colonies. Neither class could be purified. On replating, a P colony gave rise to a P plate, which contained mostly P but also d colonies; a d colony gave rise to a d plate, which contained mostly d but also P colonies. The P/d colony ratio of a fresh isolate (if isolated as a P colony) was very high or (if isolated as a d conoly) very low. It fell, if initially high, or rose, if initially low, on subsequent replatings of the same isolate. Maintained for many generations, an isolate attained a fairly constant P/d colony ratio that was less than unity. Tetrad analysis showed 2:2 segregation of the classes. We conclude that a homothallic clone is a mixture of two types of cells: P, which gives rise to a P colony, and d, to a d colony. The two types are sexually complementary and interconvertible. The rate of intercoversion of P to d exceeds that of d to P by a factor of about 2.

Notizen: Experimental binary and ternary equilibrium data for the adsorption of hydrocarbon mixtures of methane, ethane, ethylene, and propylene on activated carbon at 20°C are presented and discussed. Reproduction of binary adsorption equilibria and prediction of ternary adsorption equilibria exclusively with data of binary systems have been carried out using a real adsorbed solution theory, which requires the calculation of the activity coefficients for the components in the adsorbed phase.Predicted equilibrium data are found to be in excellent agreement with experimental values using Wilson and UNIQUAC equations to calculate the activity coefficients. The real absorbed solution theory provides a much more accurate method for predicting multicomponent adsorption equilibria than the ideal adsorbed solution theory.
