    Notizen: A new method utilizing an acoustic levitation technique is introduced to measure liquid surface tension. During the measurement a small drop of test liquid is acoustically levitated in air, and its static shape is gauged with the variation of its altitude location. The experimental data are matched with theoretical calculations giving an estimation of liquid surface tension. Due to its noncontact manipulation and requirement for a small amount of test sample, this method can be applied in many special situations. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A novel processing approach and experimental design to achieve as-cast bulk amorphous materials are investigated. By sudden decompression of a melt that is seeded with a volatile liquid, the dispersed "foaming'' liquid vaporizes, taking its latent heat of vaporization from the melt, thereby homogeneously cooling the melt. Due to a high decompression rate, a sufficient cooling rate may be produced to yield an amorphous solid foam. The resulting "foam glass'' is expected to be an open solid bulk structure that may possess glass properties and low density. These foam glass materials should be free of structural defects, and may have many potential applications. The ultimate goal for this form glass processing is to produce bulk amorphous metallic solids. This approach differs from other processes used in the production of metals with a porous structure. A description of the approach, the processing design and techniques, as well as some evaluation of foam processing with the organic p-terphenyl as a sample material are presented. Foam (p-terphenyl) is an open, porous, and yet interconnected structure, and can be made with a density as low as 12% of the original density of p-terphenyl. Extension of this principle to foam metallic glass processing is anticipated. Design of a more sophisticated apparatus for metal processing, currently in progress, is discussed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A theoretical analysis is presented for the shape oscillations of drops suspended in air. For drops of surfactant solution, the oscillation frequency is basically determined by the surface tension; the free-damping constant depends on the surface viscoelasticities. Different types of surfactant mass transfer at the droplet surface produce different surface rheological behaviors. Analytical approximate solutions for free-oscillation frequency and damping constant are derived by a perturbation method as functions of surface compositional elasticity, surface dilatational viscosity, and surface shear viscosity. These solutions are verified with exact numerical solutions. The existence of a second oscillation mode due to surface elasticity is illustrated. The phase relationships between the external driving forces and the droplet shapes for forced oscillations are discussed. It is found that at the 90° phase shift, the driving frequency and the slope of the phase diagram are equivalent to the free-oscillation frequency and damping constant. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The oscillations of an axially symmetric liquid drop in an acoustic standing wave field in air have been studied using the boundary integral method. The interaction between the drop oscillation and sound field has been included in this analysis. Our computations focus on the frequency shift of small-amplitude oscillations of an acoustically deformed drop typical of a drop levitated in air. In the presence or absence of gravity, the trend and the magnitude of the frequency shift have been given in terms of drop size, drop deformation, and the strength of the sound field. Our calculations are compared with experiments performed on the United States Microgravity Laboratory (USML-1) and with ground-based measurements, and are found to be in good agreement within the accuracy of the experimental data. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The flattening and breakup of an axially symmetric liquid drop in an acoustic standing wave field in air have been studied using a boundary integral method. The interaction between the drop and sound field are crucial to this approach. Our computations are focused on the threshold beyond which the drop loses its static equilibrium, and on the dynamic behavior after it loses its equilibrium up to the point when it breaks up. The numerical results are given in terms of drop size and the strength of sound field and are found to be in good agreement with the measurements of others. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
