    Notizen: SUMMARY 1. An image analysis technique was developed for the semiautomatic determination of abundance, size distribution and biomass in Daphnia cultures. This allowed detailed observations of growth, demography and biomass accumulation in live populations, avoiding artifacts caused by subsampling and sampling losses.2. The image analysis method gave fast, non-destructive and reliable individual counts, even in cultures with high density and a large fraction of juveniles.3. In Daphnia, animal width changes with nutritional status and growth within instar, while length changes only at the moult. Thus, estimation of individual biomass using an ellipsoidal model based on animal width gave improved biomass calculations compared to manual counting, sizing, and length : weight regressions.4. The power of the image analysis technique for assessing population growth and size structure was demonstrated in two 40-day experiments, with Daphnia magna feeding on the green algae Selenastrum capricornutum in a two-stage chemostat system.

    Notizen: A dual isotope labelling technique was used to follow the distribution of carbon and phosphorus in plankton microcosms containing autotrophs (Tetraselmis sp.), heterotrophic bacteria and herbivores (Brachionus plicatilis) at eight different total-P concentrations. P:C ratios of algae, bacteria and dissolved matter, as well as the general accumulation of degradable dissolved organic carbon, indicated that both the autotrophs and heterotrophic bacteria were P-limited in all microcosms. According to the theory, such coexistence should only be possible if bacteria have higher predation losses than algae, which was definitely not the case in our experiment. However, data are consistent with the assumption that bacteria are superior in P uptake but have a poor ability to retain acquired P, which would promote coexistence in a patchy P-supply environment resulting from nutrient regeneration by metazoan grazers.

    Notizen: Abstract Three successive metamorphic stages M1, M2 and M3 have been distinguished in polymetamorphic granulite facies quartz-feldspathic gneisses from the Seiland Igneous Province, Caledonides of northern Norway. An early period of contact metamorphism (M1; 750–950°C, ca. 5 kbar) was followed by cooling, accompanied by strong shearing and recrystallization at intermediate-P granulite facies conditions (M2; 700–750°C, 5–6kbar). High-P granulite facies (M3; ca. 700°C, 7–8 kbar) is related to recrystallization in narrow ductile shear zones and secondary growth on M2 minerals. On the basis of composition, fluid inclusions in cordierite, quartz and garnet can be divided into three major types: (1) CO2 inclusions; (2) mixed CO2−N2 inclusions; (3) N2 inclusions. Fluid chronology and mineral assemblages suggest that the earliest inclusions consist of pure CO2 and were trapped at the M1 contact metamorphic episode. A carbonic fluid was also present during the intermediate-P granulite facies M2 metamorphism. The CO2-rich inclusions in M2 garnet can be divided into two generations, an early lower-density and a late higher-density, with isochores crosscutting the P-T box of M2 and M3, respectively. The nitrogen-rich fluids were introduced at a late stage in the fluid evolution during the high-P M3 event. The mixed CO2−N2 inclusions, with density characteristics compatible with M3 conditions, are probably produced from intersection between pre-existing pure CO2 inclusions and N2 fluids introduced during M3. The fluid inclusion data agree with the P-T evolution established from mineral assemblages and mineral chemistry.

    Notizen: Abstract Fluid and solid inclusions have been studied in selected samples from a series of spinel-bearing Crdiopside-and Al-augite-series ultramafic (harzburgites, lherzolites, and olivine-clinopyroxene-rich rocks), and gabbroic xenoliths from Hierro, Canary Islands. In these samples several generations of fluid inclusions and ultramafic-and mafic-glass inclusions may be texturally related to different stages of crystal growth. The fluid inclusions consist of pure, or almost pure, CO2. The solid inclusions in the ultramafic xenoliths comprise early inclusions of devitrified ultramafic glass, sulphide inclusions, as well as polyphase inclusions (spinel+clinopyroxene±glass±other silicates) believed to have formed from trapped basaltic melts. Vitreous basaltic glass±CO2±sulphide±silicates are common as secondary inclusions in the ultramafic xenoliths, and as primary inclusions in the gabbroic xenoliths. Microthermometry gives minimum trapping temperatures of 1110° C for the early ultramafic-and mafic-glass inclusions, and a maximum of 1260–1280° C for late inclusions of host basaltic glass. In most samples the CO2 inclusions show a wide range in homogenization temperatures (-40 to +31° C) as a result of decrepitation during ascent. The lowest homogenization temperatures of about-40° C, recorded in some of the smallest CO2 inclusions, indicate a minimum depth of origin of 35 km (12 kbar) for both the Cr-diopside-and Al-augite-series xenoliths. The gabbroic xenoliths originate from a former magma chamber at a depth of 6–12 km.

    Notizen: Abstract Three different types of carbonatite magma may be recognized in the Cambrian Fen complex, S.E. Norway: (1) Peralkaline calcite carbonatite magma derived from ijolitic magma; (2) Alkaline magnesian calcite carbonatite magma which yielded biotite-amphibole søvite and dolomite carbonatite; and (3) ferrocarbonatite liquids, related to (2) and/or to alkaline lamprophyre magma (damjernite). Apatite formed during the pre-emplacement evolution of (2) contains inclusions of calcite and dolomite, devitrified mafic silicate glass and aqueous fluid. All of these inclusions have a magmatic origin, and were trapped during a mid-crustal fractionation event (P≥4 kbars, T≥625° C), where apatite and carbonates precipitated from a carbonatite magma which coexisted with a mafic silicate melt. The fluid inclusions contain water, dissolved ionic species (mainly NaCl, with minor polyvalent metal salts) and in some cases CO2. Two main groups of fluid inclusions are recognized: Type A: CO2-bearing inclusions, of approximate molar composition H2O 88–90 CO 27-5 NaCl 5 (d=0.85–0.87 g/ cm3). Type B: CO2-free aqueous inclusions with salinities from 1 to 24 wt% NaCleq and densities betwen 0.7 and 1.0 g/cm3. More strongly saline type B inclusions (salinity ca. 35wt%, d=1.0 to 1.1 g/cm3) contain solid halite at room temperature and occur in overgrowths on apatite. Type A inclusions probably contain the most primitive fluid, from which type B fluids have evolved during fractionation of the magmatic system. Type B inclusions define a continuous trend from low towards higher salinities and densities and formed as a result of cooling and partitioning of alkali chloride components in the carbonatite system into the fluid phase. Available petrological data on the carbonatites show that the fluid evolution in the Fen complex leads from a regime dominated by juvenile CO2 + H2O fluids during the magmatic stage, to groundwater-derived aqueous fluids during post-magmatic reequilibration.

    Notizen: Abstract A survey of 346 Norwegian lakes revealed some consistent patterns with regard to the occurrence of Holopedium gibberum versus Daphnia spp. Both biomass and frequency of Holopedium were negatively correlated with pH and Ca-concentration, and this species rarely occurred at pH 〉 8, or Ca-concentrations 〉 10 mg l−1. On the contrary, the various Daphnia species, although showing different susceptibilities to fish predation and different preferences for lake productivity, were all positively correlated with Ca. Statistical analysis as well as laboratory experiments and biochemical considerations, suggest that Holopedium may be a superior competitor at very low Ca-concentrations, but is replaced by Daphnia at higher pH and increasing Ca-content. High pH in itself is possibly disadvantageous for Holopedium by preventing formation of the muco-polysaccaride mantle.

    Notizen: Abstract The utilization of bacterial phosphorus in zooplankton metabolism was investigated using radio-phosphorus labelled natural bacteria as food source for zooplankton in feeding experiments. Incorporation of labelled bacteria was clearly related to the species' ability to graze on bacteria, with the cladoceran Daphnia reaching the highest biomass-specific activity and the copepod Acanthodiaptomus the lowest. Within Daphnia, juveniles had a higher biomass-specific uptake of phosphorus than adults. This was presumably caused by higher growth rates of the juveniles rather than age-specific differences in the ability to feed on bacteria, supported by the observation that the juveniles had the highest specific P-content. Retention of ingested 32P from labelled particles exceeded 80%, indicating higher assimilation efficiencies on phosphorus compared with carbon. In the investigated humic lake, approximately 75% of the phosphorus in grazable particles was bound in bacterial cells, making bacteria the most important source of P to the bacterivore zooplankton species.

    Beschreibung: East Antarctica consists of a number of cratonic fragments that amalgamated along distinct orogenic belts in late Neoproterozoic to early Palaeozoic times. These mobile belts include the c. 640 to 500 Ma old East African-Antarctic Orogen (EAAO) and the Kuunga Orogen, which seem to converge in Dronning Maud Land in the Atlantic sector of Antarctica. The polymetamorphic basement of Dronning Maud Land is characterized by rocks with Grenville-age protolith ages of c. 1130 to 1000 Ma in the west and rocks with early Neoproterozoic protolith ages of c. 1000 to 900 Ma in the east. These two provinces are separated by the prominent Forster Magnetic Anomaly, which is therefore interpreted to represent a suture zone. Four joint AWI-BGR international expeditions within the WEGAS (West-East Gondwana Amalgamation and Separation) and GEA (Geodynamic Evolution of East Antarctica) programmes between 2010 and 2015 have provided new combined geological and geophysical data that reveal a complex crustal architecture between central Dronning Maud Land and Lützow-Holm-Bay. The magnetic anomaly pattern changes significantly east of the Forster Magnetic Anomaly with apparently no indication of Maud-type crust. Particularly, the GEA II campaign (2011-12) targeted a series of previously unvisited nunataks in the largely ice- covered Borchgrevink-Isen between central Dronning Maud Land and Sør Rondane from Urna and Sørsteinen in the west to Blåklettane and Bergekongen in the east. This region is characterized by NW-SE trending distinct linear magnetic anomalies. This pattern is referred to as the SE Dronning Maud Land Province and was previously interpreted as a fragment of potentially older cratonic crust south of an Ediacaran to Cambrian mobile belt that crops out in Sør Rondane. New SHRIMP/SIMS U-Pb zircon ages and geochemical analyses, however, indicate that this region consists of Rayner-age (c. 1000 to 900 Ma) juvenile arc and metasedimentary cover rocks, which were intensely reworked by medium- to high-grade metamorphism and felsic melt injections between c. 630 and 520 Ma. The juvenile rocks are very similar to a gabbro-tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (GTTG) suite in the southern SW Terrane of Sør Rondane, which yield crystallization ages of c. 1000 to 920 Ma based on U-Pb zircon geochronology. The juvenile character of this suite suggests a long-lived accretionary setting in early Neoproterozoic times. While the rocks in the Borchgrevink-Isen further west were intensely reworked in Pan-African times, the GTTG complex in Sør Rondane shows evidence of Pan-African up to lower amphibolite-facies thermal overprint, but still contains large domains with apparently only weak deformation. An exception is the northern margin of the GTTG complex where high-strain dextral shear is related to the prominent Main Shear Zone that is estimated to be of latest Ediacaran to early Cambrian age (c. 560 to 530 Ma). This structure, which we interpret as part of a fault system related to NE-directed lateral extrusion of the EAAO, separates the Rayner-age GTTG complex from a series of greenschist- to granulite-facies metasupracrustal rocks of mainly volcano-sedimentary origin. They in turn are separated from the amphibolite- to granulite-facies NE Terrane in the north and north-east by the Main Tectonic Boundary that is postulated by researches of the Japanese National Antarctic Programme. Available literature and our own new geochronological data indicate that peak and retrograde metamorphism in the NE and SW terranes was at c. 640 to 530 Ma. Both terranes were intruded by several granitoid magmatic pulses between c. 650 and 500 Ma. In contrast to “Indo-Antarctic” affinities of the GTTG complex south of the Main Shear Zone and the similar rocks of the SE Dronning Maud Land Province to the west, these units thus appear to have rather “East African” affinities. Furthermore, grey heterogeneous gneisses and augen-gneisses of the aforementioned meta-volcanosedimentary supracrustal rocks of the SW Terrane close to the Main Shear Zone gave zircon crystallization ages of c. 750 Ma. Such ages are unknown from the EAAO in central and western Dronning Maud Land west of the Forster Magnetic Anomaly. Taking all evidence together, we propose that the Forster Magnetic Anomaly separates distinctly different parts of the EAAO. These are (i) a reworked, mainly Grenville-age crust of the Maud Belt to the west representing the overprinted margin of the Kalahari Craton, and (ii) a part of the orogen dominated by early Neoproterozoic accretionary tectonics to the east, which we refer to as Tonian Ocean Arc Super Terrane (TOAST). The contrast between these two crustal units is also reflected in the geochemistry of voluminous late-tectonic granitoids across the whole belt. Based on our new geological and aerogeophysical evidence, the regional crustal structure of eastern Dronning Maud Land as a whole may tentatively be interpreted as reflecting large-scale lateral extrusion of the EAAO post-dating continental collision in the late Neoproterozoic and early Cambrian.
