    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung. Die intestinale neuronale Dysplasie (IND) ist eine ursprünglich bei Kindern beschriebene Entwicklungsstörung des Plexus submucosus. In den letzten Jahren ließ sich diese Anomalie auch beim Erwachsenen mit chronischer Obstipation beobachten. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit bestand in einer morphometrischen Objektivierung dieses Krankheitsbildes. Die Untersuchung wurde vergleichend an Biopsien von 10 Erwachsenen mit IND und 10 Kontrollprobanden durchgeführt. Als bester diagnostischer Indikator einer IND erwies sich der Nachweis von 6–10 Riesenganglien mit mehr als 7 Nervenzellen in 15 Biopsieschnitten. Die IND stellt eine interessante histologisch verifizierbare Ursache einer chronischen Obstipation des Erwachsenen dar.
    Notes: Summary. Intestinal neuronal dysplasia (IND) was initially described as a developmental abnormality of the submucous plexus in children. In recent years this abnormality has also been observed in adults with chronic constipation. The aim of this study was a morphometric characterization of this disease. The investigation was performed with 10 adults with IND, compared with 10 healthy control probands. The best diagnostic indicator of IND proved to be the detection of 6–10 giant ganglia with more than 7 nerve cells in 15 biopsy sections. IND is an interesting cause of chronic constipation which can be histologically verified.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Wasserhaltiges Antimonpentoxid mit ausgezeichneten chemischen und mechanischen Eigenschaften läßt sich durch einen zweistufigen Trocknungsprozeß aus einer wäßrigen Suspension von Antimon-V-säure herstellen. Entscheidend für die Vortrocknung ist, daß die Verbindung kristalline Struktur annimmt. Dies ist die erste Bedingung für den Retentionseffekt gegenüber Na-Ionen. Die Nachtrocknung führt zur Abnahme der Auswaschbarkeit dieser Ionen. Daneben erfolgt eine Herabsetzung der Gitterkonstante und des Wassergehaltes der Produkte.
    Notes: Summary Hydrated antimony pentoxide with favourable chemical and mechanical properties could be produced from an aqueous suspension of antimonic acid by a two stage drying process. A decisive factor for the pre-drying is that the compound should be given the chance to form crystalline structure, the existence of which is the primary condition for the retentive effect of HAP on Na+-ions. The post-drying leads to a decrease of elutability of Na+-ions. This is accompanied by a reduction of the lattice constant and the water content of the products.

    Notes: Abstract The selectivity of Na+ separation on especially prepared hydrated antimony pentoxide (HAP) was studied with respect to trace elements. For this purpose NaCl samples, doped with 0.5 μg each of altogether 21 selected elements in form of suitable neutron activated compounds, were in relation to practice subjected to column experiments. In some cases trace elements were used in different oxidation states. Considered were elements which are of particular interest for neutron activation analysis. With simultaneous retention of Na+ (DK≥108) Cs, Ba, Sc, La, Ce, Eu, Cr, Mo, Mn, Co, Cu, Ag, Au, Zn, Cd, Hg, and Sb are completely eluted from the HAP column, using 7.5N HCl, whereby Cs and to some extent Ba and Sc in comparison to the elements mentioned above required a higher elution volume. Rb, Se and As on the contrary were almost quantitatively retained on HAP column, W partly as WO 4 2− . The scope of validity of the results will be discussed.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Ausgehend von der Problematik der modernen Elementspurenanalytik von Meerwasser wird aufgezeigt, daß die Neutronenaktivierungsanalyse auf Grund ihrer inneren Struktur zur Überprüfung von anderen Meerwasser-Analysenverfahren — insbesondere von solchen, die an Bord von Forschungsschiffen zum Einsatz kommen — geeignet ist. Dazu ist allerdings die Lösung bestimmter Probleme notwendig. An Hand der bei der Aktivierung von Meersalz auftretenden Matrixeffekte wird gezeigt, daß die rein instrumentelle Anwendung der Neutronenaktivierungsanalyse in dem hier betrachteten Zusammenhang für eine begrenzte Anzahl von Elementen durchaus imstande ist, wertvolle Dienste zu leisten. Für eine Erweiterung des Spektrums der erfaßbaren Elemente ist allerdings die frühzeitige Abtrennung der von den Matrixelementen herrührenden Aktivitäten erforderlich. Hierzu wird ein spurenanalytisch bewertetes Trennverfahren vorgestellt, das die selektive Abtrennung der störenden Matrixaktivitäten erlaubt. Nach dem Abklingen von 38Cl werden 24Na/42K durch Adsorption an speziell hergestelltem, hydratisierten Sb2O5 (HAP) mit hohen Dekontaminationsfaktoren separiert. Als problematisch erwies sich die anzuschließende 80/82Br-Dekontamination auf der Basis einer Extraktion mit CCl4. Während der Bestrahlung reagieren die im Meersalz vorliegenden Bromide mit organischem Material zu schwer extrahierbaren Species, so daß dadurch die 80/82Br-Dekontamination unbefriedigend bleibt und die Nachweisgrenze der Elementspuren limitiert wird. Ein Zusatz von I− vor der Bestrahlung unterbindet diese Reaktion und führt auch für 80/82Br zu den erforderlichen Dekontaminationsfaktoren. Die mit dem entwickelten Verfahren zu erreichenden Nachweisgrenzen für die neutronenaktivierungsanalytische Bestimmung der Elementspuren wurden experimentell ermittelt und hinsichtlich der geplanten Anwendung in einer heißen Zelle für effektivere Bestrahlungsbedingungen hochgerechnet. Eine Gegenüberstellung dieser Daten mit Elementspurengehalten in Meerwasser verdeutlicht die Leistungsfähigkeit des Verfahrens.
    Notes: Summary Starting from the problematic situation of modern trace element analysis of sea water it is outlined that neutron activation analysis because of its immanent structure is qualified for testing other analytical methods for sea water, especially those which are used on board of research vessels. In this context the solution of certain problems is required. By means of matrix effects which are connected with the neutron activation of sea salt it is shown, that instrumental neutron activation analysis is quite a powerful tool for the determination of a limited number of elements. In order to enlarge this number of elements the early separation of matrix activities is necessary. In this context a radiochemical procedure is presented by which a selective separation of the interfering matrix activities can be performed. After the decay of 38Cl the isotopes 24Na and 42K are separated with high decontamination factors on a HAP-column. The subsequent 80/82Br-decontamination by means of a CCl4-extraction proved to be problematic. During the irradiation some part of the bromide present in sea salt reacts with organic material and in this way forms hardly extractible Br-compounds. Thus the 80/82Brdecontamination remained unsatisfactory and the limits of detection for the trace elements were still limited. Addition of I− before irradiation prevents the interfering reaction of bromide and leads to the 80/82Brdecontamination factor required. The detection limits for trace elements in sea water obtained by this method were investigated experimentally and extrapolated to the more effective irradiation conditions for the intended application in a hot cell. A comparison of these detection limits with the average content of trace elements in sea water illustrates the efficiency of the described procedure.

    Description: Physiological mechano-acoustic signals, often with frequencies and intensities that are beyond those associated with the audible range, provide information of great clinical utility. Stethoscopes and digital accelerometers in conventional packages can capture some relevant data, but neither is suitable for use in a continuous, wearable mode, and both have shortcomings associated with mechanical transduction of signals through the skin. We report a soft, conformal class of device configured specifically for mechano-acoustic recording from the skin, capable of being used on nearly any part of the body, in forms that maximize detectable signals and allow for multimodal operation, such as electrophysiological recording. Experimental and computational studies highlight the key roles of low effective modulus and low areal mass density for effective operation in this type of measurement mode on the skin. Demonstrations involving seismocardiography and heart murmur detection in a series of cardiac patients illustrate utility in advanced clinical diagnostics. Monitoring of pump thrombosis in ventricular assist devices provides an example in characterization of mechanical implants. Speech recognition and human-machine interfaces represent additional demonstrated applications. These and other possibilities suggest broad-ranging uses for soft, skin-integrated digital technologies that can capture human body acoustics.
