Abstract: The semiconductor tracker (SCT) is one of the tracking systems for charged particles in the ATLAS detector. It consists of 4088 silicon strip sensor modules. During Run 2 (2015–2018) the Large Hadron Collider delivered an integrated luminosity of 156 fb -1 to the ATLAS experiment at a centre-of-mass proton-proton collision energy of 13 TeV. The instantaneous luminosity and pile-up conditions were far in excess of those assumed in the original design of the SCT detector. Due to improvements to the data acquisition system, the SCT operated stably throughout Run 2. It was available for 99.9% of the integrated luminosity and achieved a data-quality efficiency of 99.85%. Detailed studies have been made of the leakage current in SCT modules and the evolution of the full depletion voltage, which are used to study the impact of radiation damage to the modules.

Abstract: In recent years it has been realized that pre-BBN decays of moduli can be a significant source of dark matter production, giving a "nonthermal WIMP miracle" and substantially reduced fine-tuning in cosmological axion physics. We study moduli masses and sharpen the claim that moduli dominated the pre-BBN universe. We conjecture that in any string theory with stabilized moduli there will be at least one modulus field whose mass is of order (or less than) the gravitino mass. Cosmology then generically requires the gravitino mass not be less than about 30 TeV and the cosmological history of the universe is nonthermal prior to BBN. Stable LSP's produced in these decays can account for the observed dark matter if they are "wino-like." We briefly consider implications for the LHC, rare decays, and dark matter direct detection and point out that these results could prove challenging for models attempting to realize gauge mediation in string theory.

Abstract: By fibering the duality between the E 8 × E 8 heterotic string on T 3 and M-theory on K3, we study heterotic duals of M-theory compactified on G 2 orbifolds of the form T 7 / $$ {\mathbb{Z}}_2^3 $$ ℤ 2 3 . While the heterotic compactification space is straightforward, the description of the gauge bundle is subtle, involving the physics of point-like instantons on orbifold singularities. By comparing the gauge groups of the dual theories, we deduce behavior of a “half- G 2 ” limit, which is the M-theory analog of the stable degeneration limit of F-theory. The heterotic backgrounds exhibit point-like instantons that are localized on pairs of orbifold loci, similar to the “gauge-locking” phenomenon seen in Hořava-Witten compactifications. In this way, the geometry of the G 2 orbifold is translated to bundle data in the heterotic background. While the instanton configuration looks surprising from the perspective of the E 8 × E 8 heterotic string, it may be understood as T-dual Spin(32)/ℤ 2 instantons along with winding shifts originating in a dual Type I compactification.

Abstract: We first describe the low energy dynamics of ten dimensional heterotic supergravity compactified on the smooth, flat 3-manifold $$ \mathbbm{T} $$ T 3 /ℤ 2 , without supersymmetry, and explain how it arises from flat heterotic gauge fields. The semi-classical theory has both Coulomb and Higgs branches of non-supersymmetric vacua. We then give an exact worldsheet description as asymmetric orbifolds of $$ \mathbbm{T} $$ T 3 , where the orbifold generator involves a Nikulin non-symplectic involution θ of the even self-dual lattice Γ (19 , 3) . Along the way we briefly compare our findings with M-theory on K3 /θ . Our construction gives a novel CFT description of the semi-classical field theory moduli space. In particular, the Wilson line parameters in the lattice I ⊂ Γ (19 , 3) of signature (19 − s, 1) which is invariant under θ , and in its orthogonal complement N , correspond respectively to Coulomb and Higgs branch moduli. There is a rich pattern of transitions amongst Higgs and Coulomb branches which we describe using the worldsheet theory.

Abstract: We describe a class of compact G 2 orbifolds constructed from non-symplectic involutions of K3 surfaces. Within this class, we identify a model for which there are infinitely many associative submanifolds contributing to the effective superpotential of M -theory compactifications. Under a chain of dualities, these can be mapped to F -theory on a Calabi-Yau fourfold, and we find that they are dual to an example studied by Donagi, Grassi and Witten. Finally, we give two different descriptions of our main example and the associative submanifolds as a twisted connected sum.

Abstract: In recent years it has been realized that in string/M theories compactified to four dimensions which satisfy cosmological constraints, it is possible to make some generic predictions for particle physics and dark matter: a nonthermal cosmological history before primordial nucleosynthesis, a scale of supersymmetry breaking which is "high" as in gravity mediation, scalar superpartners too heavy to be produced at the LHC (although gluino production is expected in many cases), and a significant fraction of dark matter in the form of axions. When the matter and gauge spectrum below the compactification scale is that of the MSSM, a robust prediction of about 125 GeV for the Higgs boson mass, predictions for various aspects of dark matter physics, as well as predictions for future precision measurements, can be made. As a prototypical example, M theory compactified on a manifold of G 2 holonomy leads to a good candidate for our "string vacuum," with the TeV scale emerging from the Planck scale, a de Sitter vacuum, robust electroweak symmetry breaking, and solutions of the weak and strong CP problems. In this article we review how these and other results were derived, from the key theoretical ideas to the final phenomenological predictions.

Abstract: Superstring/M-theory compactified on compact Ricci flat manifolds have recently been conjectured to exhibit instabilities whenever the metrics do not have special holonomy. We use worldsheet conformal field theory to investigate instabilities of Type II superstring theories on compact, Ricci flat, spin 3-manifolds including a worldsheet description of their spin structures. The instabilities are signalled by the appearance of stringy tachyons at small radius and a negative (1-loop) vacuum energy density at large radius. We briefly discuss the extension to higher dimensions.

Abstract: We consider the heterotic string on Calabi-Yau manifolds admitting a Strominger-Yau-Zaslow fibration. Upon reducing the system in the T 3 -directions, the Hermitian Yang-Mills conditions can then be reinterpreted as a complex flat connection on ℝ 3 satisfying a certain co-closure condition. We give a number of abelian and non-abelian examples, and also compute the back-reaction on the geometry through the non-trivial α ′-corrected heterotic Bianchi identity, which includes an important correction to the equations for the complex flat connection. These are all new local solutions to the Hull-Strominger system on T 3 × ℝ 3 . We also propose a method for computing the spectrum of certain non-abelian models, in close analogy with the Morse-Witten complex of the abelian models.
