Notes: The "passivated emitter and rear locally diffused'' (PERL) silicon solar cell structure presently demonstrates the highest terrestrial performance of any silicon-based solar cell. This paper presents a detailed investigation of the limiting loss mechanisms in PERL cells exhibiting independently confirmed 1-sun efficiencies of up to 23.0%. Optical, resistive, and recombinative losses are all analyzed under the full range of solar cell operating conditions with the aid of two-dimensional (2D) device simulations. The analysis is based on measurements of the reflectance, quantum efficiency, dark and illuminated current–voltage (I–V) characteristics, and properties of the Si–SiO2 interfaces employed on these cells for surface passivation. Through the use of the 2D simulations, particular attention has been paid to the magnitudes of the spatially resolved recombination losses in these cells. It is shown that approximately 50% of the recombination losses at the 1-sun maximum power point occur in the base of the cells, followed by recombination losses at the rear and front oxidized surfaces (25% and 〈25%, respectively). The relatively low fill factors of PERL cells are principally a result of resistive losses; however, the recombination behavior in the base and at the rear surface also contributes. This work predicts that the efficiency of 23% PERL cells could be increased by about 0.7% absolute if ohmic losses were eliminated, a further 1.1% absolute if there were no reflection losses at the nonmetallized front surface regions, about 2.0% by introducing ideal light trapping and eliminating shading losses due to the front metallization, and by about 3.7% absolute if the device had no defect-related recombination losses. New design rules for future efficiency improvements, evident from this analysis, are also presented. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Multicrystalline silicon wafers, widely used in commercial photovoltaic cell production, traditionally give much poorer cell performance than monocrystalline wafers (the previously highest performance laboratory devices have solar energy conversion efficiencies of 18.6% and 24.0%, respectively). A substantially improved efficiency for a multicrystalline silicon solar cell of 19.8% is reported together with an incremental improvement in monocrystalline cell efficiency to 24.4%. The improved multicrystalline cell performance results from enshrouding cell surfaces in thermally grown oxide to reduce their detrimental electronic activity and from isotropic etching to form an hexagonally symmetric "honeycomb" surface texture. This texture reduces reflection loss as well as substantially increasing the cell's effective optical thickness by causing light to be trapped within the cell by total internal reflection. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Improvements in the efficiency of high-resistivity silicon concentrator solar cells with conventional top and rear contacts are reported. These improvements have been obtained despite a substantially sublinear increase in cell short-circuit current with increasing solar concentration. The theory of operation of cells of this type under short circuit is outlined. This theory accurately describes the observed current sublinearity and indicates how it can be eliminated.

Notes: In this article, we studied the photorefractive properties of Cu-doped (K0.5Na0.5)0.2(Sr0.75Ba0.25)0.9Nb2O6 (Cu:KNSBN) crystals with different doping levels. The properties include two-wave mixing and self-pumped phase conjugation, absorption properties, and the growth conditions as well. We also studied the effect of the dimensions on the photorefractive properties. The mechanism of Cu-doped KNSBN and the influence of the different sites occupied by Cu+ on photorefractive properties are also discussed. All the experimental results showed that doping levels have much effect on the photorefractive properties. The crystal with a higher doping level has a higher effective charge carrier density, a larger coupling coefficient, and a faster response rate, which is suitable for fast optical information processing. Dimension has much influence on the photorefractive properties. The thinner crystal with the same doping level has a larger coupling gain coefficient, and a shorter response time. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We studied the interaction of p-type HgCdTe with a continuous-wave (cw) carbon dioxide (CO2) laser experimentally and theoretically and obtained an apparent damage threshold temperature, 670–680 K, which corresponds to the temperature of the solid–solid phase transition of HgCdTe. We proposed a two-dimensional thermal conducting model dealing with the thermal diffusion of cw laser processing of materials in this letter. The temperature distribution during the interaction between HgCdTe and the cw CO2 laser is also presented and discussed. All the theoretical calculations are in good agreement with the experimental results. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Electrical domain fixing in Cu- and Mn-doped (K0.5Na0.5)0.2(Sr0.75Ba0.25)0.9Nb2O6 (KNSBN) crystals is presented. The relation between the applied field and the revealed grating in single and multidomain crystals is investigated. In multidomain Mn-doped KNSBN, a revealing efficiency of over 233% is obtained. The mechanism of domain fixing in single and multidomain crystal is discussed. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Ticks of nine small mammal species were studied in an area of endemic Lyme disease in Hailin County, Heilongjiang Province, from 1 May to 10 October 1986. The bulk (93%) total small mammal captures wereApodemus speciouss (45%),Clethrionomys rufocanus (31%),A. agrarius (11%) andEutamias sibiricus; (5%): these host species accounted for 97% of the 162 ticks collected.Ixodes persulcatus Schulze were most abundant onE. sibiricus (0.64 larvae and 0.08 nymphs/squirrel), and less abundant onA. agrarius (1.16 larvae/mouse),A. speciosus (0.38 larvae/mouse) andC. rufocanus (0.37 larvae and nymphs/vole). The seasonal abundance pattern of larvalI. persulcatus on four small mammal species appears as a bimodal peak (June and September), but nymphalI. persulcatus has a monomodal peak during spring. The prevalence of immatureI. persulcatus on four small mammal species may play an important role in the epidemiology of Lyme disease in Hailin County.
