    Description: We investigate the early-time coalescence of two co-flowing axisymmetric turbulent plumes and the later-time flow of the induced vortices in a rotating, homogeneous fluid using laboratory experiments. The experiments demonstrate the critical importance of the rotation period Tf = 2π/f, where f is the Coriolis parameter of the background rotation. We find that if the plumes’ sources are sufficiently “close” for the plumes to merge initially at an “early time” tm≲tr = 3Tf/4, the experimentally observed merging height zme agrees well with the non-rotating theoretical relationship of zmt ≈ (0.44/α)x0〈zr = 5.5F01/4f-3/4, where α is the entrainment “constant” of the turbulent plumes, x0 is the separation distance between the two plume sources, F0 is the source buoyancy flux of each plume, and zr is the distance that the plume rises in the time tr before rotational effects become significant. Therefore, rotation does not affect the initial time to merger or the initial merger height of such “close” plumes. For “late” times t〉tr, however, the flow dynamics are substantially more complicated, as the flow becomes significantly affected by rotation. The propagation and entrainment of the plumes becomes strongly affected by the vortices induced by the entrainment flow in a rotating environment. Also, the plume fluid itself starts to interact with these vortices. If the plumes have already initially merged by the time t = tr, a single vortex (initially located at the midpoint of the line connecting the two plume sources) develops, which both advects and modifies the geometry of the merging plumes. Coupled with the various suppressing effects of rotation on the radial plume entrainment, the “apparent” observed height of merger can vary substantially from its initial value. Conversely, for more widely separated “distant” plumes, where x0〉xc = (25α/2)F01/4f-3/4, the plumes do not merge before the critical time tr when rotation becomes significant in the flow dynamics and two vortices are observed, each located over a plume source. The combined effect of these vortices with the associated suppression of entrainment by rotation thus significantly further delays the merger of the two plumes, which apparently becomes possible only through the merger of the induced vortices.

    Notes: Abstract: Mutations in the Caenorhabditis elegans unc-41 gene result in an allele-dependent elevation of acetylcholine content. Eight recessive alleles (cn252, e268, e399, e650, e1175, e1199, e1294, and e870) lead to phenotypes including uncoordinated locomotion, slow growth, a small mature body, and resistance to the acetylcholinesterase inhibitors as well as the elevation of acetylcholine content. The remaining two alleles, e554 and e1162, exhibit normal acetylcholine levels but display the short-body phenotype in a semidominant way. To determine the localization of the elevated acetylcholine content, a method for the isolation of synaptic vesicles from C. elegans was established. The elevation of acetylcholine content in the unc-41 mutants is accompanied by the accumulation of synaptic vesicles. We propose that at least one function of the unc-41 gene relates to the release of neurotransmitters.

    Notes: Abstract: To expand on the nature of regional cerebral vulnerability to ischemia, the release of dopamine (DA) and dopaminergic (D1 and D2) receptors were investigated in Mongolian gerbils subjected to bilateral carotid artery occlusion (15 min) alone or with reflow (1–2 h). Extracellular cortical and striatal content of DA and its metabolites was measured by microdialysis using HPLC with electrochemical detection. The kinetic properties of D1 and/or D2 receptor binding sites were determined in cortical and striatal membranes with the use of radiolabeled ligands (125I-SCH23982 and [3H]YM-09151-2, respectively). The ischemic release of DA from the striatum was greater (400-fold over preischemic level) than that from the cortex (12-fold over preischemic content). The affinity for the D1-receptor ligand was lower (KD= 1.248 ± 0.047 nM) after ischemia than that for sham controls (KD= 0.928 ± 0.032 nM, p 〈 0.001). The number of binding sites for D2 receptors decreased in striatum (Bmax= 428 ± 18.4 fmol/mg of protein) after ischemia compared with sham controls (Bmax= 510 ± 25.2 fmol/mg of protein, p 〈 0.05). D1 or D2 binding sites were not changed either in the ischemic cortex or postischemic striatum and cortex. The findings strongly suggest that the ischemic release of DA from striatum is associated with early transient changes in D1- and D2-mediated DA neurotransmission.

    Notes: A theoretical analysis has been carried out to compare the resonance condition in the asymmetric double-barrier structure with that in the symmetric triple-barrier one. It is found that the triple-barrier structure may be considered as two quasidouble-barrier structures whose resonance condition may decide the resonance levels in the triple-barrier structure. It is confirmed that two modes exist in the triple-barrier structure: one is normal mode consisting of doublet and the other is degenerated mode of singlet. The critical condition between the two modes is given and its physical meaning is examined. Moreover, it is confirmed that both the normal mode and the degenerated mode exist also in symmetric n-fold barrier structures (n≥3). © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Deep-level transient spectroscopy has been performed on Si-doped GaAs layers grown by molecular-beam epitaxy at substrate temperatures of 400–450 °C. The λ effect is taken into account and overlapping peaks are analyzed numerically. An 0.65 eV electron trap of concentration 2×1016 cm−3 is believed to be related to the AsGa-associated 0.65 eV Hall-effect center, and also to the trap EB4 found in electron-irradiated GaAs.

    Notes: Wafer annealing was applied to undoped conductive GaAs epitaxial layers grown by the chloride chemical vapor deposition method in order to realize semi-insulating GaAs epitaxial layers. It was found that, by wafer annealing at temperatures higher than 950 °C, semi-insulating epitaxial layers with a resistivity higher than 107 Ω cm and a mobility higher than 5000 cm2/V s can be obtained. The material quality has been evaluated by Hall measurement, isothermal capacitance transient spectroscopy, deep level transient spectroscopy, scanning photoluminescence, AB etching, ion implantation, and activation efficiency measurement. It was concluded that the semi-insulating behavior of undoped GaAs epitaxial layers is due to the increase of the EL2 concentration to the level of 5×1015 cm−3 realized by wafer annealing. The present material does not show any cell structures which are inherent to bulk GaAs materials. It was found to be of the best quality ever reported from the viewpoint of various material characterizations. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.
