Notes: We have demonstrated that the molecular hydrogen obtained from atomic recombination at 300 mK has nonstatistic ortho–para ratio. The ortho para conversion is less than 3% in the vibrational relaxation phase. We suggest that it is possible to carry out detailed comparison between calculations and measurements at conditions similar to our experiments.

Notes: A hard x-ray imaging microscope based on a phase zone plate has been developed and tested. The zone plate, with a 5 cm focal length and a 0.2 μm smallest linewidth, was used to image 8 keV x rays from the samples. The imaging microscope can be used to obtain nearly diffraction-limited resolution over the entire imaging field, and its resolution is almost independent of source size and source motions. We have tested such an imaging microscope, and a resolution of about 0.4 μm was obtained. The images were obtained with an exposure time of less than 1 min, for a magnification factor of 30 in the x rays. The x rays were then converted into visible light, and another 7 times magnification were obtained by using a lens system coupled to a charge coupled device camera. The results from the imaging microscope, and possible applications, will be discussed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A combined study of major and trace elements, fluid inclusions and oxygen isotopes has been carried out on garnet pyroxenite from the Raobazhai complex in the North Dabie Terrane (NDT). Well-preserved compositional zoning with Na decreasing and Ca and Mg increasing from the core to rim of pyroxene in the garnet pyroxenite indicates eclogite facies metamorphism at the peak metamorphic stage and subsequent granulite facies metamorphism during uplift. A P–T path with substantial heating (from c. 750 to 900 °C) after the maximum pressure reveals a different uplift history compared with most other eclogites in the South Dabie Terrane (SDT). Fluid inclusion data can be correlated with the metamorphic grade: the fluid regime during the peak metamorphism (eclogite facies) was dominated by N2-bearing NaCl-rich solutions, whereas it changed into CO2-dominated fluids during the granulite facies retrograde metamorphism. At a late retrograde metamorphic stage, probably after amphibolite facies metamorphism, some external low-salinity fluids were involved. In situ UV-laser oxygen isotope analysis was undertaken on a 7 mm garnet, and impure pyroxene, amphibole and plagioclase. The nearly homogeneous oxygen isotopic composition (δ18OVSMOW = c. 6.7‰) in the garnet porphyroblast indicates closed fluid system conditions during garnet growth. However, isotopic fractionations between retrograde phases (amphibole and plagioclase) and garnet show an oxygen isotopic disequilibrium, indicating retrograde fluid–rock interactions. Unusual MORB-like rare earth element (REE) patterns for whole rock of the garnet pyroxenite contrast with most ultra-high-pressure (UHP) eclogites in the Dabie-Sulu area. However, the age-corrected initial εNd(t) is − 2.9, which indicates that the protolith of the garnet pyroxenite was derived from an enriched mantle rather than from a MORB source. Combined with the present data of oxygen isotopic compositions and the characteristic N2 content in the fluid inclusions, we suggest that the protolith of the garnet pyroxenite from Raobazhai formed in an enriched mantle fragment, which has been exposed to the surface prior to the Triassic metamorphism.

Notes: We performed a detailed study of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of porous silicon (PS) samples at different stages of treatment and with different porosities. In addition to the commonly observed Pb0-like dangling bond, results of curve fitting to our ESR spectra show that a Pb1-like center, similar to the Pb1 center observed at the (100) crystalline-Si/SiO2 interface, appears in the PS nanostructure. The ratio of the number of Pb1-like centers to that of Pb0-like centers is related to the PS porosity. Remote hydrogen plasma processing of the annealed PS does not change the ratio significantly, although the total numbers of Pb0-like and Pb1-like centers are reduced and photoluminescence efficiency is improved.

Notes: Far fields in perpendicular direction to the junction are investigated in double heterostructure (DH) and multiple quantum well (MQW) midwave-infrared InAsSb/InPAsSb/InAs lasers (λ=3.2–3.6 μm). Strong broadening of the far fields in the DH lasers was observed with increases in temperature and/or current. On the contrary, MQW lasers with otherwise identical structure exhibit very stable far fields as narrow as 23° for all the operating conditions investigated. Our experiment and theoretical modeling suggest that these different behaviors of far fields in DH and MQW lasers are attributed to the refractive index fluctuation in the InAsSb laser active region. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Irreversible flux losses during thermal cycling or aging are commonly measured in open circuit on axially magnetized cylinders or square prisms. The reported results are usually tied to a mean operating-point permeance P derived from a dimensional ratio for the sample on the often unstated assumption that definable demagnetizing factors exist for both geometries. Experimental results on several shapes of different Nd-Fe-type magnets show that this can be misleading. Prisms always show a significantly better apparent stability than cylinders of presumably equivalent P. This means that loss data from different sources cannot be easily compared. Investigators should always precisely describe the sample shapes and coil configurations they used. Dimensional ratio rather than just P should be specified. Standardization to tests on cylinders is recommended.

Notes: The effects of the alloying elements Co, Dy, Er, Al, and Nb on modifying the elevated temperature properties of sintered Nd-Fe-B–based permanent magnets have been studied in our laboratory. The results are summarized and analyzed. Small Nb additions increase coercivity and improve elevated temperature properties. Higher Nb additions lead to decomposition of the 2:14:1 phase into a 2:17 phase and a new magnetic phase with a Curie point around 350 °C. The effectiveness of Nb additions appears to be associated with the rare-earth content of the magnets.

Notes: A Fresnel phase zone plate with an unprecedented focusing efficiency of 33% was fabricated using an x-ray lithographic technique and was tested using synchrotron x rays. Contributions by the zeroth-order x ray to the focus were minimal. Spatial resolution in the micrometer range was achieved. The measured spot size was dominated by geometric demagnification of the source. It should be possible to obtain submicrometer resolution by aperturing the source. Experimental results of focusing efficiency measurements, intensity distribution at the focal plane, and spatial resolution tests are reported.

Notes: We compare the electron spin resonance (ESR) signal of the dangling bond in porous silicon (PS) layers, produced by electrochemical etching, to the ESR signal from hydrogenated amorphous Si(a-Si:H) films. The anisotropy of the ESR signal from PS showed g values varying as for the Pb Si/SiO2 interface dangling bond. The g value varies from g(parallel)=2.0020 to g⊥=2.0080 with an inhomogeneously broadened line width increasing from 1.8 to 3.8 G. An ESR powder line, with superhyperfine and strain broadening intrinsic to PS, has more anisotropy in g(parallel)−g⊥ and less inhomogeneous broadening than does the dangling bond line in a-Si:H. No evidence was seen for light-induced metastability on a H-passivated PS film.
