Kinetics of the Rearrangement of Allylcarbinyl Anions. - Isotope Effects on the Equilibrium Between α- and β-Deuterated Allylcarbinyl Grignard ReagentsThe homoallylic rearrangement (A1 ⇋ A2 ⇋ A3) of the 3-phenyl- and the 3-methyl-substituted magnesium- and lithiumorganic compounds 11a, 13a, and 20a has been kinetically investigated. The postulated cyclopropylcarbinyl intermediate A2 can be detected in the equilibrium neither chemically nor by NMR spectroscopy. Hence the rearrangement can be described as a simple first order process. The transformation of the kinetic scheme A1 ⇋ A2 ⇋ A3 to the scheme A1 ⇋ A3 is shown by means of exact calculated solutions. The rate constants obtained by compensation of errors show that the carbanionic rearrangement of the organometallic allylcarbinyl compounds depends on 1) the structure of the organic group, 2) the temperature, 3) the electronegativity of the metal (rearrangement lithium- ≫ dialkylmagnesium- 〉 Grignard compound), 4) the solvent (rearrangement in more polar solvents more slowly with the organomagnesium compounds but faster with the lithium compounds), 5) the concentration (the rate of rearrangement of the organomagnesium compounds increases linearly with concentration, the proportionality constant depending characteristically on the temperature, the solvent, and on the structure; again, the lithium compound behaves in opposite manner, its reaction rate being largely independent of concentration), 6) the presence of salts in the solution (MgBr2 increases rearrangement of the Grignard reagent 13a, while lithium alkoxide retards the isomerisation of the corresponding lithium compound 20a). - The β-deuterated compound (A3) is favored in the equilibrium mixture because of an extraordinarily high thermodynamic secondary isotope effect. The equilibrium constant (A3/A1) depends on the physical conditions. The results may be explained by assuming two different reaction mechanisms for the rearrangement, an ionizationrecombination-process for the lithium compound and a bimolecular mechanism, presumably via ate complexes, for the organomagnesium compounds.
Notes:
