    Description: Natural gas microseepage in petroleum-bearing sedimentary basins is an important complement to geophysical methods in oil-gas exploration and a natural source of methane (CH4) for the atmosphere. Microseepage, typically occurring in correspondence with petroleum fields throughout the world, is generally lower in summer, due to temperature-driven methanotrophic consumption, and higher in winter. The global estimates of microseepage methane emission have, however, relatively high uncertainties because of limited amounts of flux data, leading to poor knowledge of the spatial distribution and temporal variability of the gas emission factors. We studied the seasonal variation of microseepage flux to the atmosphere from a petroleum field in China (the Dawanqi oilfield), through methane flux measurements performed in summer 2014, winter 2015, and summer 2019. Winter data refer to frozen soil conditions, with snow cover and ice thickness in the soil exceeding 60 cm. Gas concentration (CH4, CO2, C2+ alkanes) and stable C isotopic composition of CH4 and CO2 in shallow (4 m deep) boreholes confirmed the existence of thermogenic gas seepage. Methane microseepage is higher in summer and lower or nil in winter. This seasonal trend is opposite to what was observed in areas where winter soil is not or poorly frozen. Our data suggest that seasonal microseepage variation may not be univocal worldwide, being strongly dependent on the presence of ice and snow cover in winter. The regional increase of temperature due to climate change, already demonstrated for the Tarim Basin over the last 50 years, could, in the future, reduce winter ice and enhance annual methane emission to the atmosphere.

    Description: To describe the temporal trends of breast cancer mortality in East Asia and to better understand the causes of these trends, we analyzed the independent effects of chronological age, time period and birth cohort on breast cancer mortality trends using age-period-cohort (APC) analysis. We chose three main countries in East Asia, namely China, South Korea, and Japan, which have reported death status to the WHO Mortality Database, and used the United States as a comparison population. Our study shows that in general, breast cancer mortality rates in females increased in all three East Asian countries throughout the study period. By APC analysis, we confirmed that there is, in fact, a difference in age-specific mortality rate patterns between the Eastern and the Western countries, which is presumably caused by the two-disease model. While the cause of the decrease from approximately the 1950s generation is still in question, we believe that increasing general awareness and improvements in the health-care system have made a significant contribution to it. Although the age and cohort effects are relatively strong, the period effect may be a more critical factor in the mortality trend, mainly reflecting the increase in exposures to carcinogens and behavioral risk factors.

    Description: To understand the distribution of the in-plane magnetic anisotropy under a dc electric field, FeCo films deposited onto Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 -PbTiO 3 (011)-orientated substrates by RF-magnetron sputtering were investigated. Vibrating sample magnetometer was performed and the occurrence of switching was demonstrated of the magnetization easy axis in FeCo films upon applying solely a dc electric field. A theoretical calculation was performed to provide a simplified account of the magnetoelastic contribution to the magnetic anisotropy. Quantification of the angular distribution of the magnetic anisotropy field under various electric fields was obtained, which can contribute to realizing low-loss electric-field-turning devices.

    Description: The biosynthesis of the antibiotic epsilon-poly-lysine (ε-PL) in Streptomyces albulus is performed by polylysine synthase (pls); however, the regulatory mechanism of this process is still unknown. Here, we first obtained the complete genome sequence of S. albulus ZPM, which consists of 9,784,577 bp and has a GC content of 72.2%. The genome houses 44 gene clusters for secondary metabolite biosynthesis, in which 20 gene clusters are involved in the biosynthesis of polyketides and nonribosomally synthesized peptides. High-throughput sequencing was further performed, and genetic variants were identified from pooled libraries consisting of the 30 highest-yield mutants or 30 lowest-yield mutants. More than 350 genetic variants associated with ε-PL yield have been identified. One hundred sixty-two affected proteins, from important metabolic enzymes to novel transcriptional regulators, were identified as being related to ε-PL synthesis. HrdD, one of the affected genes, is a sigma factor that shows the most sensitive response to pH change and contains a non-synonymous mutation (A132V) in mutant strains with lower ε-PL yields. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays showed that the pls gene is likely regulated by transcriptional activator HrdD. The data obtained in this study will facilitate future studies on ε-PL yield improvement and industrial bioprocess optimization. Scientific Reports 5 doi: 10.1038/srep09201

    Description: Previous studies have revealed hysteretic behavior in subterranean estuaries in response to intensified wave conditions caused by off-shore storm events, showing dependence of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) and subsurface salt distribution on historic wave conditions. Although most shorelines worldwide are also exposed to tidal fluctuations, it is unclear how tides moderate wave-induced SGD and salinity distribution in subterranean estuaries. This study presents numerical simulations that explore the combined influence of intensified wave conditions and tides on groundwater flow and salt transport in a subterranean estuary. The results show that tides weaken the hysteretic wave effect on SGD, suggesting that a tidally influenced subterranean estuary is less sensitive to intensified wave conditions with respect to the water fluxes across the aquifer-sea interface. However, due to enhancement of salt-freshwater mixing, tides strengthen the hysteretic wave effect on the salt fluxes across the aquifer-sea interface, prolonging the recovery of salt distribution in the subterranean estuary to the pre-storm state. These findings reveal the non-linear, coupling nature of processes driven by oceanic oscillations at different time scales in subterranean estuaries.

    Description: A non-volatile four-state magnetic memory is achieved in a Co/(011)Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 -PbTiO 3 heterostructure. The in-plane magnetization of ferromagnetic Co film in the heterostructure can be controlled both electrically and magnetically. Electric field mediated magnetism is caused by piezostrain effect, which displays a stable non-volatile remnant magnetization vs electric field looplike behavior. In-plane strain-electric field ( S-E ) behavior under different temperatures reveals a non-volatile strain switching effect, which is responsible for the non-volatile remnant magnetization switching through piezostrain mediated magnetoelectric effect. Further investigations on temperature dependence of S-E behavior suggest that the absent of the second non-180° domain switching may be responsible for the asymmetry in strain curves that causes the non-volatile strain switching, and therefore causes the non-volatile remanent magnetization switching, which is crucial for the four-state magnetoelectric memory.
