Notes: Three selfing and 13 crossing experiments between tetraploid individuals of Achillea ceretanica, Achillea collina, Achillea distans ssp.‘styriaca’ Saukel (ined.), and Achillea pratensis (Achillea millefolium complex, Compositae), five F1 crosses, three backcrosses and one further selfing experiment were carried out in order to study the inheritance of longipinenone (1) and its hydroxyl derivative (2). From these crossings, 1294 plants were studied by qualitative thin layer chromatography. Progenies from parent and F1 plants without longipinenones (0-type, ll) uniformly contained none of these two sesquiterpenes. All other crossing experiments showed typical segregation patterns of 0-type, L-type (longipinenone (1) without hydroxylongipinenone, L.hh) and H-type (hydroxy-longipinenone (2) and occasionally longipinenone, L.H.) in the ratio of 1 : 1 and 1 : 3. According to these results both derivatives are under dominant genetic control regulated by genes L and H, whereby hydroxylation takes place after synthesis of longipinenone (1).

Notes: Successful crossing experiments between tetraploid individuals of Achillea ceretanica, A. collina, A. distans ssp. styriaca, and A. pratensis (A. millefolium complex, Compositae) were carried out. Sesquiterpenes of 1013 hybrid plants obtained from 13 crossings were studied by qualitative thin layer chromatography (TLC). F1-progenies from parent plants with guaianolides (GU-type), as well as the offspring of a back-cross, uniformly contained proazulenes. Diallel crosses between plants exclusively with eudesmanolides (EU-type) resulted in a 7:1 segregation-ratio of EU- and GU-plants. Two reciprocal crossing experiments between EU- and GU-parents resulted in 28.6% and 89.3% EU-individuals, as well as GU-offspring. According to these findings, the qualitative marker ‘proazulene’ (GU-type) is thought to be a recessive character of the tetraploid Achillea species studied.

Notes: Abstract Compositions of basaltic samples from the southeastern Brazil passive margin (18°–24° S) depict the change from continental to oceanic lithosphere during the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean. Samples studied range from 138 to 105 m.y. old and are from 12 Petrobrás drill cores recovered from the coastline to about 150 km offshore in the Espirito Santo, Campos, and Santos basins. Compositions vary, ranging, for example, from 49–54 wt.% SiO2, 0.5–3.0 wt.% TiO2, 0.6–5.0 FeO*/MgO, and 〈1-〉6 La/ Yb(n), but can be grouped: (i) basalts enriched in incompatible elements, such as K (some K2O〉2.0 wt.%), Rb (〉18 ppm), Zr (〉120 ppm), and LREE (some FeO* 16 wt.%; most with SiO2 51–54 wt.%), and resembling Serra Geral continental flood basalts (SG-CFB) of southern Brazil; (ii) basalts less enriched, or transitional, in incompatible elements, having K2O 〈0.40 wt.% and flat REE patterns, and resemble N. Atlantic diabases and FAMOUS basalts; and (iii) one depleted sample, Ce/Yb(n)=0.7, where Ce(n)=4. Expressed in oceanic-basalt terminology and Zr-Nb-Y abundances, ‘enriched’ samples are P- and T-type MORB (e.g., Zr/Nb ∼4–25), ‘transitional’ samples are T-type (Zr/ Nb ∼8–27), and the ‘depleted’ sample is N-type MORB (Zr/Nb〉30). Trace-element ratios (e.g., Zr/Nb, Zr/Y) link the Brazil margin basalts to a heterogeneous mantle (attributed to metasomatic veining) of variably proportioned mixtures of depleted-mantle (N-MORB) and plume (P-MORB, e.g., Tristan hotspot) materials. The various compositions therefore reflect, in part, different zones of melting during the separation of Gondwanaland, where gradual decompression during rifting enabled concurrent melting of upper, more depleted (non- or sparsely-veined) mantle and enriched (densely-veined) mantle. Within the time represented, melting produced enriched, transitional, and depleted magmas that were emplaced subaerially, hypabyssally, and subaqueously; they mark the transition from CFB before rifting and separation (from deeper, enriched mantle) to N-MORB in the S. Atlantic afterwards (from non- or sparsely-veined upper mantle). While P-type mantle components account for the enriched compositions of some basalts (Zr/Nb〈8), continental crust is largely responsible for that of others (e.g., Ti/Zr 40–57; La/Yb(n) 5–6, and δ 18O+12.2 in one sample). Some may be contaminated expressions of otherwise T-type basalts free of crustal components. This study identifies CFB to be from sources similar to those for T- and P-type oceanic rocks, where individual CFB magmas may or may not have acquired crustal signatures.

Notes: Abstract. The aim of this study was to determine long-term success of flexible tantalum stents for the treatment of ostial and truncal renal artery stenosis. Since 1989, flexible tantalum stents (type Strecker) were implanted in 34 patients (36 arteries, 25 ostial lesions, 11 truncal lesions) with uncontrollable renovascular hypertension, 9 of them in association with renal insufficiency. Stents were placed unilaterally in 32 patients, and bilaterally in 2 patients for the treatment of renal artery stenosis. Thirty-five of 36 lesions were atherosclerotic, including 5 recurrencies after previous percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty (PTRA). One patient had Takayasu arteritis. Stents were implanted after unsuccessful PTRA of 11 truncal and 23 ostial lesions, and as a primary procedure in 2 ostial lesions. Follow-up examinations included blood pressure measurement, determination of serum creatinine level, color duplex sonography, or angiography. The technical success rate was 92 %. Technical failure included incorrect stent placement (1 of 36 lesions, 2.8 %), and stent dislocation (2 of 36 lesions, 5.6 %), and two stents were retrieved percutaneously. In one case of Takayasu arteritis, residual stenosis of 40 % was observed. After technically successful stent placement, 77 % of patients became normotensive with or without medication. In the remaining patients there was partial improvement with blood pressure between 140 and 180 mmHg. Renal function improved in 76 % of patients (completely in 3 of 8, 38 %; and partially in 3 of 8, 38 %). Primary patency rate including all stented lesions and initial technical failures was 82.4 % ± 6.8 (1 year) and 82.4 % ± 9.2 (3 years). After technically successful stent placement, patency rates were 89.9 ± 5.6 % (1 year), and 89.9 ± 7.6 % (3 years). For ostial lesions, primary patency rate was 87.9 ± 6.7 % (1 year) and 87.9 ± 9.2 % (3 years). Placement of flexible tantalum stents in renal arteries is technically demanding, especially in ostial lesions. Once placed successfully, stent patency rate is excellent.

Notes: Abstract Eighteen patients with atherosclerotic disease of the aorto-iliac bifurcation were treated with percutaneously implantable, balloon expandable tantalum stents. Stenting indications were percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) —resistant stenoses and long aorto-iliac occlusions. The vascular prostheses were inserted by bilateral femoral approach and dilated simultaneously, their proximal parts being deployed in parallel in the aorta and their distal parts anchored in the common iliac arteries (kissing-stent method). In aorto-iliac occlusions, local fibrinolysis was used to facilitate guide wire passage. Within 20 months (the duration of longest observation), no major acute or late complications occurred. Clinical symptoms improved immediately in all patients. Deterioration of clinical symptoms during the follow-up period was observed in five patients and was due to additional, newly developed atherosclerotic disease located distally, the bifurcation stents remaining patent. This new type of non-invasive procedure can be regarded a safe and efficous alternative to vascular surgery, especially in poor surgical candidates.
