    Notes: Abstract  The association of cardiac malformation with the congenital nephrotic syndrome (CNS) has been previously reported in only one family. We report four patients with CNS: three with pulmonary valve stenosis (one requiring valvuloplasty) and one with discrete sub-aortic stenosis requiring surgical resection. We conclude that the cardiac status of all patients with CNS should be reviewed regularly by a paediatrician, with a low threshold for referral to a cardiologist, as flow murmurs due to chronic anaemia may obscure cardiac pathology. It is important to diagnose any associated cardiac lesions as these may require intervention, and may also predispose to the development of bacterial endocarditis if surgical or dental procedures are undertaken without appropriate antibiotic prophylaxis.

    Notes: Abstract  Visceral leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease endemic in the Mediterranean Basin, including Malta. Finnish-type congenital nephrotic syndrome is an autosomal recessive condition that presents in the first 3 months of life with heavy proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia with secondary edema, and hyperlipidemia. We present an infant with congenital nephrotic syndrome who had had unilateral nephrectomy and who also developed visceral leishmaniasis. He was successfully cleared of the infection by the administration of sodium stibogluconate, with no deterioration of renal function or other complications.

    Notes: Abstract Bovine granulosa cells from 3–7 mm follicles were cultured without anchorage in soft agar/methylcellulose solution for 14 days, with or without 50 ng/ml basic fibroblast growth factor. The granulosa cells divided to form colonies of cells. These were analysed by light and electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry and Western immunoblotting. In approximately 20% of the colonies extracellular matrix was clearly visible at the light-microscope level. Ultrastructurally the matrix resembled a basal lamina 30–100 nm thick and was composed of tangled fibres or cords. Unidentified spherical structures of less than 50 nm diameter were sometimes present and attached to this basal lamina. The basal lamina of follicles had similar features, except that the basal lamina produced in vitro was a large aggregate of many convoluted layers. The cells produced collagen type IV and the cellular form of fibronectin. Intercellular areas not associated with basal lamina were identified. Ruthenium red staining revealed these areas to be rich in proteoglycan granules. Free granules were clustered near the cell surface, and the lumina of these areas were rich in fibres decorated with ruthenium red. This material did not resemble follicular fluid of antral follicles. Thus, granulosa cells in anchorage-independent cultures have a follicular cell morphology and secrete two distinct extracellular matrices, one similar to the follicular basal lamina.

    Description: Mid- to late-Holocene sea-level records from low-latitude regions serve as an important baseline of natural variability in sea level and global ice volume prior to the Anthropocene. Here, we reconstruct a high-resolution sea-level curve encompassing the last 6000 years based on a comprehensive study of coral microatolls, which are sensitive low-tide recorders. Our curve is based on microatolls from several islands in a single region and comprises a total of 82 sea-level index points. Assuming thermosteric contributions are negligible on millennial time scales, our results constrain global ice melting to be 1.5–2.5 m (sea-level equivalent) since ~5500 years before present. The reconstructed curve includes isolated rapid events of several decimetres within a few centuries, one of which is most likely related to loss from the Antarctic ice sheet mass around 5000 years before present. In contrast, the occurrence of large and flat microatolls indicates periods of significant sea-level stability lasting up to ~300 years.

    Description: Highlights • Coral reef responses to slow-rate, low-amplitude, high-frequency sea-level changes. • Continuous reef development over the last 6000 years in optimal conditions. • Mid-late Holocene coral assemblages similar to their modern counterparts. • Facies distribution governed by variations in accommodation space. • Prominent role played by reef deposits in the formation and shaping of modern islands. Geological records of coastal system evolution during past higher and/or rising sea levels provide an important baseline for developing projections regarding the response of modern coastal systems to future sea-level rise. The mid-late Holocene corresponds to the most recent window into natural variability prior to the Anthropocene and involves slow-rate and low-amplitude sea-level changes that were mostly governed by a limited glacio-eustatic contribution, most likely sourced from Antarctica, and ‘glacial isostatic adjustment’ processes. This paper documents in unprecedented detail the response of coral reefs and coastal systems to changing accommodation space in relation to mid-late Holocene sea-level changes in French Polynesia. The sea-level curve that underpins this study has a global significance and documents a single short-lived sea-level highstand between 4.10 and 3.40 kyr BP. The amplitude of the highstand is less than one metre, within the range of the predicted sea level at the end of the current century. The reported relative sea-level changes are characterized by slow rates ranging from a few tens of millimetres per year to up to 2.5 mm/yr and by significant sea-level stability (stillstands) lasting more than a century and up to 250 years, defining a step-like pattern. Sea-level variability probably driven by climatic oscillations on interannual to millennial time scales is evidenced during the entire time window. The detailed reconstruction of reef development over the last 6000 years brings valuable information regarding coral reef dynamics and coastal processes during periods of higher sea level and wave energy regimes. The persistence of stable and optimal depositional environments over the last 6000 years is demonstrated by the constant overall composition and diversity of reef communities and the almost continuous development of coral microatolls. The facies distribution as well as the lateral extension and shift of facies belts have been governed by variations in accommodation space, which are controlled by relative sea-level changes and antecedent topography. The widespread development of mid-late Holocene reef deposits in coastal areas suggests that they have played a prominent role in global processes related to the formation and shaping of modern islands.

    Description: An agaran-type polysaccharide, GFP08, isolated from Grateloupia filicina (C. Agardh) Lamouroux, was mainly composed of 1,3-linked β- d -galactose partially sulfated at position O-2 and 1,4-linked α- l -galactose O-2, O-3-disulfate, α- l -galactose O-6-sulfate and 3,6-anhydro-α- l -galactose. Small quantities of xylose, 4,6- O -(1'-carboxyethylidene) and 6- O -methyl-β- d -galactose were also present. In mice bearing sarcoma-180 cells, GFP08 decreased tumor weight in a dose-dependent manner. The antiangiogenic activity of GFP08 was evaluated using the chicken chorioallantoic membrane assay, and the results showed that GFP08 dose-dependently reduced new vessel formation. Meanwhile, GFP08 inhibited the differentiation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) into capillary-like structures in vitro and reduced the number of migrated cells. However, there was no observed cytotoxicity of GFP08 toward HUVECs. Further study revealed that GFP08 decreased tissue factor (TF) expression without affecting the activities of matrix metalloproteinase-2 and -9. All those data indicated that GFP08 had an antitumor effect that might be associated in part with its antiangiogenic effect through down-regulating the expression of TF protein.
