    Description / Table of Contents: Summary 1. This paper presents the results of a meeting on the evaluation of quantitative procedures for the separation of meiofauna, held at the Marine Station of the Biologische Anstalt Helgoland, in May 1972. Close co-operation on the part of the participants (p. 194) has allowed assessment of advantages and disadvantages of the separation methods applied. The time needed for preserved methods can be reduced by changing to scanning rather than picking out for sorting and counting. 2. Sorting without concentrations: This method is suitable for very fine-grained sediments, oozes; it is generally applied for preserved samples; adequate for hard fauna; insufficient for soft fauna; very time consuming. 3. Decantation: Suitable for sandy sediments; generally applied for preserved samples; adequate for hard fauna; insufficient for soft fauna; time consuming. 4. Elutriation: Suitable for sandy sediments; for unpreserved samples only with anaesthetization, more effective with preserved samples; limited for total live fauna. With preserved samples, adequate for hard fauna; insufficient for soft fauna; quick method. 5. Warm-water elutriation: Suitable for sandy sediments; designed for live hard fauna (especially nematodes, ostracods); quick method. 6. Sea-water ice treatment: Suitable for sandy sediments with microporal structure; only for live extraction; limited for hard fauna; well suited for soft fauna (including ciliates and flagellates); time consuming.
    Notes: Kurzfassung Im Mai 1972 fand an der Meeresstation der Biologischen Anstalt Helgoland ein Arbeitstreffen mit dem Ziel statt, die verschiedenen Methoden zur quantitativen Isolierung der Meiofauna aus dem Sediment in ihrer Effektivität miteinander zu vergleichen. Die Verfahren zur Anreicherung der Meiofauna in der Probe, des Sortierens und Auszählens werden beschrieben und die durch die Teilnehmer am Arbeitstreffen gemeinsam erzielten Ergebnisse diskutiert. Die Wertung der einzelnen Methoden zur Erfassung der Gesamtfauna, der „harten“ und der „weichen“ Meiofauna, von konservierten und nichtkonservierten Organismen sowie die Anwendung der Methoden auf verschiedenen Sedimenttypen werden durch statistische Analysen abgesichert. Eine Zusammenfassung der Arbeitsverfahren sowie deren Charakterisierung und Leistungsfähigkeit beschließt die Darstellung.

    Notes: Abstract Calorific and carbon values were determined for a variety of marine and freshwater Protozoa (Noctiluca miliaris, Euplotes sp.,Eufolliculina sp. respectivelyTetrahymena pyriformis, Paramecium caudatum), their food sources(Bacteria, Dunaliella primolecta, Ceratium hirundinella), and for Protozoa-dominated plankton samples. Most calorific values lie close to the centre of the range covering organisms in general. Low values in some marine samples probably resulted from the retention of bound water in the dried material. When all results were combined with data selected from the literature, the dependence of calorific value on carbon content was highly significant. This relationship is probably also adequately described by an energy-carbon regression through the variety of organic compounds commonly found in organisms. Calorific value expressed per unit carbon is shown to vary little in Protozoa (mean conversion factor 46 J [mg C]−1) or throughout the range of biological materials considered in this study (45 J [mg C]−1).

    Notes: Abstract The harpacticoid copepodTisbe holothuriae has been cultivated in the Helgoland laboratory for more than 20 years. The effects of density on the larval development and the female productivity were studied by comparing two culture systems: (1) enclosed system, and (2) running-water system. In both systems, a nutritious mixed diet ofDunaliella tertiolecta, Skeletonema costatum, and granulatedMytilus edulis was offered. Larval mortality, larval development and female productivity are found to be significantly dependent on both the population density and specificity of the culture system. Increasing density causes higher larval mortality, longer larval development time, and a reduction in female productivity. In comparison with the enclosed system, the running-water system shows decisive advantages: larval mortality is about 20% lower, the rate of larval development is about two days shorter, and there is a very high rate of nauplii production. The sex ratio exhibits high variations, but in general, there is no clear relationship between sex ratio and population density. Nevertheless, when reared in the running-water system, a relatively high percentage of females (〉45%) was found at lower densities.

    Notes: Abstract A new type of compression chamber for microscopic studies of living microorganisms is described. This broadly applicable instrument allows controlled slowing down, turning and compression of vagile organisms. It has been developed for use with different types of microscopes, especially the modern inverted versions. Due to the extremely flat design, illumination according to the Köhler principles is guaranteed. Therefore, all modern procedures such as bright-, darkfield, phase-contrast, differential interference contrast, polarized and fluorescent microscopy can be carried out. Once focused, parfocal objective lenses (even oil immersion high power objectives) can be interchanged without refocusing. The chamber is composed of three basic elements: (1) baseplate, with cylindrical head-piece, (2) compression ring for vertical adjustment, (3) rotor, non-threaded and gliding on viscous silicon. An upper and a lower circular coverslip is permanently glued to the rotor and baseplate respectively. Preparation and interchange of the specimens are rapidly done by lifting and subsequent insertion of the non-threaded rotor. Thus, the new chamber is an almost non-evaporating closed system and the organisms to be studied are preserved alive for many hours. Except when high power magnifications are used, the principles, on which the compression chamber is based, allow various modifications in outfitting and design, such as transformation into a continuous flow system for fresh- or seawater, or exchange of media at choice. The chamber and its function is compared with similar instruments, such as the rotocompressor and the Spoon microcompressor.
