    Notes: Carbon nanostructures of different kinds have been synthesized by chemical vapor deposition. By modifying the deposition temperature, the catalyst material, and the hydrocarbon, nanofibers with herringbone structure, multi-walled nanotubes with tubular structure, and single-walled nanotubes were deposited. The nanostructures were purified with different treatment methods. The carbon nanostructures were characterized using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The hydrogen storage capability was investigated for all obtained nanostructures. The measurements show that the storage capacity of hydrogen is very limited in all the carbon nanostructures. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Description / Table of Contents: Pt Dispersity and Rehydratation of η-Al2O3 in Pt/Al2O3 CatalystsThe dispersity of Pt after reduction of supported chloroplatinate has been investigated. It has been found that an increasing rehydration of the carrier (η-Al2O3) before the reduction decreases the Pt dispersity and the reduction temperature. The content of residual water in the alumina has been determined by thermogravimetry. The two conditions of decreasing dispersity, the rehydratation of the surface and the progress of the reduction, are discussed.
    Notes: Es wurde die Dispersität des Pt nach der Reduktion von trägerfixiertem Chloroplatinat bestimmt. Dabei zeigte sich, daß durch eine Rehydratisierung des Trägers (η-Al2O3) vor der Reduktion die Pt-Dispersität verringert und die Reduktionstemperatur herabgesetzt wird. Der Restwassergehalt des Al2O3 wurde thermogravimetrisch bestimmt. Die beiden Bedingungen für die Dispersitätsabnahme, die Rehydratisierung der Oberfläche und der Ablauf der Reduktion, werden diskutiert.

    Description: Background— A well-developed coronary collateral circulation provides a potential source of blood supply in coronary artery disease. However, the prognostic importance and functional relevance of coronary collaterals is controversial with the association between exercise training and collateral growth still unclear. Methods and Results— This prospective, open-label study randomly assigned 60 patients with significant coronary artery disease (fractional flow reserve ≤0.75) to high-intensity exercise (group A, 20 patients) or moderate-intensity exercise (group B, 20 patients) for 4 weeks or to a control group (group C, 20 patients). The primary end point was the change of the coronary collateral flow index (CFI) after 4 weeks. Analysis was based on the intention to treat. After 4 weeks, baseline CFI increased significantly by 39.4% in group A (from 0.142±0.07 at beginning to 0.198±0.09 at 4 weeks) in comparison with 41.3% in group B (from 0.143±0.06 to 0.202±0.09), whereas CFI in the control group remained unchanged (0.7%, from 0.149±0.09 to 0.150±0.08). High-intensity exercise did not lead to a greater CFI than moderate-intensity training. After 4 weeks, exercise capacity, V o 2 peak and ischemic threshold increased significantly in group A and group B in comparison with group C with no difference between group A and group B. Conclusions— A significant improvement in CFI was demonstrated in response to moderate- and high-intensity exercise performed for 10 hours per week.     Description: For decades, we have known that exercise training exerts beneficial effects on the human body, and clear evidence is available that a higher fitness level is associated with a lower incidence of suffering premature cardiovascular death. Despite this knowledge, it took some time to also incorporate physical exercise training into the treatment plan for patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). In recent years, in addition to continuous exercise training, further training modalities such as high-intensity interval training and pyramid training have been introduced for coronary artery disease patients. The beneficial effect for patients with CVD is clearly documented, and during the last years, we have also started to understand the molecular mechanisms occurring in the skeletal muscle (limb muscle and diaphragm) and endothelium, two systems contributing to exercise intolerance in these patients. In the present review, we describe the effects of the different training modalities in CVD and summarize the molecular effects mainly in the skeletal muscle and cardiovascular system.

    Description: Precise weekly positions of 403 Global Positioning System (GPS) stations located worldwide are obtained by reprocessing GPS data of these stations for the time span from 4 January 1998 until 29 December 2007. The processing algorithms and models used as well as the solution and results obtained are presented. Vertical velocities of 266 GPS stations having a tracking history longer than 2.5 yr are computed; 107 of them are GPS stations located at tide gauges (TIGA observing stations). The vertical velocities calculated in this study are compared with the estimates from the co-located tide gauges and other GPS solutions. The formal errors of the estimated vertical velocities are 0.01–0.80 mm yr−1. The vertical velocities of our solution agree within 1 mm yr−1 with those of the recent solutions (ULR5 and ULR3) of the Université de La Rochelle for about 67–75 per cent of the common stations. Examples of typical behaviour of station height changes are given and interpreted. The derived height time series and vertical motions of continuous GPS at tide gauges stations can be used for correcting the vertical land motion in tide gauge records of sea level changes.

    Description: Tide gauge measurements are affected by land movement on almost all global coastlines. Especially in tectonically active areas like Japan, the tide gauge time series are strongly affected by earthquakes and subsequent land movement. Linear trends are calculated from the results of the TIGA repro1 reprocessing campaign. Several examples of unusual land movement at tide gauges as well as continental stations are examined in detail and compared with data from tide gauges, hydrology models, and GRACE water mass. These comprise, e.g., trend changes caused by earthquakes, land movement from draughts, or spurious trends from snow cover on the GPS antenna. Precise weekly positions of 403 Global Positioning System (GPS) stations located worldwide are obtained by reprocessing GPS data of these stations at the time span from January 1998 until December 2007. The used processing algorithm and models as well as the solution and results obtained are presented. Vertical velocities of GPS stations having tracking history longer than 2.5 years are computed and compared with the estimates from the co-located tide gauges and other GPS solutions. The derived time series and vertical motions of continuous GPS at tide gauges stations can be used for correcting tide gauge estimates of regional and global sea level changes. The resulting linear trends and plots of the GPS time series have been made available via FTP at the GFZ Potsdam.
