    Notes: Summary The hydrolysis of phosphate from phytic acid by the acid soil phytase system was reduced in the presence of metal ions. Copper was most effective in this respect — zinc and cadmium were less inhibitory. Binding to metals did not completely inhibit the hydrolysis of phytic acid. At higher metal concentrations, where binding to other soil constituents, like humic acids, interfered less, the inhibition of the phytase activity was stronger than that of acid phosphatase.

    Notes: The application of the enzyme thermistor in the analysis of cyanide in standard solutions as well as in blast furnace waste water is described. The heat signal is generated in the conversion of cyanide, catalyzed by the immobilized enzymes rhodanese (E.C. 2.8.1.1) and injectase (E.C. 4.4.19). Using the combination of cyanide-metabolizing enzymes and the enzyme thermistor unit, assays down to 20μM cyanide can be carried out. Linear relationships were obtained at 20-600μM cyanide for injectase and 20-1000μM for rhodanese. The stability at 27°C of the heat response was initially decreased, but soon stabilized at about 80% of the initial value and remained so for at least 200 hr. The technique was easily adapted to continuous analysis, applicable to environmental control (e.g., a “cyanide guard”) with a response time at present within 2-3 min after a sudden change in cyanide concentration has appeared.

    Description: This dataset contains hydroacoustic measurements collected by the Simrad EK60/EK80 echosounder of RV Polarstern during its drift across the Central Arctic Ocean during the MOSAiC expedition (PS122) from October 2019 to October 2020. We provide data for the frequencies 38, 70, 120 and 200 kHz (synchronized), and 18 kHz. The data are uncalibrated raw measurements of acoustic backscatter in the Simrad raw format. The data should only be used after careful consideration of the disclaimer on appropriate scientific use of the data provided with this dataset.

    Description: This data set contains the hydrographic water sample data collected with the ship based CTD rosette during the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC). The CTD is an SBE911plus with 24 bottles, 12 liters each, operated with a winch and crane on the side of Polarstern. The data set contains calibrated and quality-controlled parameters (temperature, conductivity, oxygen and their derived variables) as well as only pre-cruise calibrated parameters where no post-cruise calibration or quality control was applied (all other). CDOM fluorescence data are the exception. Quality control was performed but data have to be handled with care, as the sensor seems to have broken down during leg 3 such that no post-cruise calibration could be applied. Due to issues during processing SPAR data is missing in the bottle data. The data are provided as text file (all cruise legs in one file) as well as in netCDF format (one file per cruise leg). The accuracy for salinity and conductivity is 0.004 while the accuracy for temperature is 0.002. Additional information on the sensor used for the final data set, the water depth as well as the availability of profile or bottle data is given in a separate info-text-file.     Description: This data set contains the hydrographic profile data collected with the ship based CTD rosette during the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC). The CTD is an SBE911plus with 24 bottles, 12 liters each, operated with a winch and crane on the side of Polarstern. The data set contains calibrated and quality-controlled parameters (temperature, conductivity, oxygen and their derived variables) as well as only pre-cruise calibrated parameters where no post-cruise calibration or quality control was applied (all other). CDOM fluorescence data are the exception. Quality control was performed but data have to be handled with care, as the sensor seems to have broken down during leg 3 such that no post-cruise calibration could be applied. The data are provided as text file (all cruise legs in one file) as well as in netCDF format (one file per cruise leg). The accuracy for salinity and conductivity is 0.004 while the accuracy for temperature is 0.002. Additional information on the sensor used for the final data set, the water depth as well as the availability of profile or bottle data is given in a separate info-text-file.     Description: Concentrations of Chlorophyll a and phaeopigments from CTD-rosette casts during the MOSAiC (PS122) drift expedition in the central Arctic Ocean. 2-4L of water were filtered onto precombusted GF/F filters (nominal pore size 0.7µm) and frozen at -80°C. Samples were subsequently extracted in 90°C acetone,homogenized using a cell mill, and meaured on the following day using a Turner flourometer, followed by an acidification step to determine pheopigments (see Knap et al. 1994 for details and calculations). Samples were collected roughly once per week from end of October 2019 to beginning of October 2020.

    Description: As a result of global warming, the marine ecosystem around the North Pole, the Central Arctic Ocean (CAO), is in fast transition from a permanently to a seasonally ice-covered ocean. The sea-ice loss will enable summer access to the CAO for non-icebreaking ships, including fishery vessels, in the near future. However, the lack of knowledge on the CAO ecosystem impedes any assessment of the sustainability of potential future fisheries in the CAO. Taking a precautionary approach, nine countries and the EU established in 2021 the Agreement to Prevent Unregulated High Seas Fisheries in the Central Arctic Ocean, which a.o. includes mapping and monitoring of the CAO ecosystem before any commercial fishery is initiated. To reduce the existing lack of knowledge, the EFICA Consortium participated, together with ca. 250 on-board scientists, in sampling and data collection of ecosystem data during four legs of the international MOSAiC expedition in 2019-2020. This report describes the field work performed by the EFICA scientists using water-column acoustics, deep-sea video recording, and fish and eDNA sampling for targeting zooplankton and fish. Further ecosystem data (physical, chemical and biological) were collected by the EFICA scientists in collaboration with other scientists on-board. Together with this report, a metadata database containing lists of all collected samples and data that are relevant for future fishery assessment studies was delivered to the European Commission.
