Description: The mesozooplankton community, with special emphasis on calanoid copepods, was studied with respect to its species composition, abundance, vertical distribution and developmental structure during the “Ice Station POLarstern” (ISPOL) expedition to the ice-covered western Weddell Sea. Stratified zooplankton tows were carried out nine times between 1 December 2004 and 2 January 2005 with a multiple opening–closing net between 0 and 1000 m depth. Copepods were by far the most abundant taxon, contributing more than 94% of the total mesozooplankton. Numerical dominants were cyclopoid copepods, mostly Oncaea spp. A total of 66 calanoid copepod species were identified, but the calanoid copepod community was characterised by the dominance of only a few species. The most numerous species was Microcalanus pygmaeus, which comprised on average 70% of all calanoids. Calanoides acutus and Metridia gerlachei represented other abundant calanoid species contributing an average of 8% and 7%, respectively. All other species comprised less than 3%. The temporal changes in the abundance and population structure of M. pygmaeus and M. gerlachei were small while a shift in the stage frequency distribution of C. acutus was observed during the study: copepodite stage IV (C IV) dominated the C. acutus population with 48–50% during the first week of December, while C V comprised 48% in late December. C I and C II of C. acutus were absent in the samples, and males occurred only in very low numbers in greater depths. In M. gerlachei, C I was not found, whereas all developmental stages of M. pygmaeus occurred throughout the study. All three species showed migratory behaviour, and they occurred in upper water layers towards the end of the investigation. This vertical ascent was most pronounced in C. acutus and relatively weak in the other two species. In M. pygmaeus and M. gerlachei, copepodids were responsible for the upward migration in late December, while the vertical distribution of adults did not change. In C. acutus, all abundant developmental stages (C IV, C V and females) ascended to upper water layers. Almost exclusively (93%) medium- and semi-ripe females of C. acutus and M. gerlachei were found, and only 3–4% of the ovaries were ripe. The absence of C I and the low number of ripe females indicate that the main reproductive period had not started in C. acutus and M. gerlachei until the end of our study in early January. In contrast, the high portion of C I and C II of M. pygmaeus suggests that reproduction of this species had started in October–November and hence before the onset of the phytoplankton bloom in the water. The community structure did not differ between stations with one exception on 26 December, when the station was strongly influenced by the continental shelf.

Description: One of Saturn's largest moons, Enceladus, possesses a vast extraterrestrial ocean (i.e., exo-ocean) that is increasingly becoming the hotspot of future research initiatives dedicated to the exploration of putative life. Here, a new bio-exploration concept design for Enceladus' exo-ocean is proposed, focusing on the potential presence of organisms across a wide range of sizes (i.e., from uni- to multicellular and animal-like), according to state-of-the-art sensor and robotic platform technologies used in terrestrial deep-sea research. In particular, we focus on combined direct and indirect life-detection capabilities, based on optoacoustic imaging and passive acoustics, as well as molecular approaches. Such biologically oriented sampling can be accompanied by concomitant geochemical and oceanographic measurements to provide data relevant to exo-ocean exploration and understanding. Finally, we describe how this multidisciplinary monitoring approach is currently enabled in terrestrial oceans through cabled (fixed) observatories and their related mobile multiparametric platforms (i.e., Autonomous Underwater and Remotely Operated Vehicles, as well as crawlers, rovers, and biomimetic robots) and how their modified design can be used for exo-ocean exploration.

Description: Monthly averaged total volume transport of the Indonesian throughflow (ITF) estimated by 14 global ocean data assimilation (ODA) products that are decade to multi-decade long are compared among themselves and with observations from the INSTANT Program (2004-2006). The ensemble averaged, time-mean value of ODA estimates is 13.6 Sv (1 Sv = 106 m3/s) for the common 1993-2001 period and 13.9 Sv for the 2004-2006 INSTANT Program period. These values are close to the 15-Sv estimate derived from INSTANT observations. All but one ODA time-mean estimate fall within the range of uncertainty of the INSTANT estimate. In terms of temporal variability, the average scatter among different ODA estimates is 1.7 Sv, which is substantially smaller than the magnitude of the temporal variability simulated by the ODA systems. Therefore, the overall “signal-to-noise” ratio for the ensemble estimates is larger than one. The best consistency among the products occurs on seasonal-to-interannual time scales, with generally stronger (weaker) ITF during boreal summer (winter) and during La Nina (El Nino) events. The averaged scatter among different products for seasonal-to-interannual time scales is approximately 1 Sv. Despite the good consistency, systematic difference is found between most ODA products and the INSTANT observations. All but the highest-resolution (18-km) ODA product show a dominant annual cycle while the INSTANT estimate and the 18-km product exhibit a strong semi-annual signal. The coarse resolution is an important factor that limits the level of agreement between ODA and INSTANT estimates. Decadal signals with periods of 10-15 years are seen. The most conspicuous and consistent decadal change is a relatively sharp increase in ITF transport during 1993-2000 associated with the strengthening tropical Pacific trade wind. Most products do not show a weakening ITF after the mid-1970s’ associated with the weakened Pacific trade wind. The scatter of ODA estimates is smaller after than before 1980, reflecting the impact of the enhanced observations after the 1980s. To assess the representativeness of using the average over a three-year period (e.g., the span of the INSTANT Program) to describe longer-term mean, we investigate the temporal variations of the three-year low-pass ODA estimates. The median range of variation is about 3.2 Sv, which is largely due to the increase of ITF transport from 1993 to 2000. However, the three-year average during the 2004-2006 INSTANT Program period is within 0.5 Sv of the long-term mean for the past few decades.

Description: In this study DAIS 7915 reflective imaging spectrometer (IS) data was analyzed for its potential for evaporite mineral mapping in the area of Mt. Sedom, Israel. The data was analyzed with a new processing strategy, due to the high noise content found in the SWIR-II spectral region, which is of high relevance for a mineralogical interpretation of IS data. The implemented approach avoids analysis on the noisy picture element (pixel) scale through delineation of spectrally homogeneous areas in the data cube based on a supervised neural network approach. Class endmembers are chosen through a manual selection process that is based on ideas taken from multi-spectral image interpretation. The underlying assumption is that color differences found in special false color composites created from the IS data can be directly related to an abundant surface lithology. Results show that based on this procedure, even given a high noise content in the data, lithologically important surface units can be classified, which agree well with an existing geological map. Further spectral analysis of the mean class spectra shows that a lithological interpretation in terms of the class bulk mineralogy is possible. Lithological information extracted from class endmember spectra is in good qualitative agreement with results from XRD/XRF measurements for collected field samples.
