Beschreibung: The 11 March 2011 tsunami triggered by the M9 and M7.9 earthquakes off the Tōhoku coast destroyed facilities at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) leading to a significant long-term flow of the radionuclide 137Cs into coastal waters. A high-resolution, global-coastal nested ocean model was first constructed to simulate the 11 March tsunami and coastal inundation. Based on the model's success in reproducing the observed tsunami and coastal inundation, model experiments were then conducted with differing grid resolution to assess the initial spread of 137Cs over the eastern shelf of Japan. The 137Cs was tracked as a conservative tracer (without radioactive decay) in the three-dimensional model flow field over the period of 26 March–31 August 2011. The results clearly show that for the same 137Cs discharge, the model-predicted spreading of 137Cs was sensitive not only to model resolution but also the FNPP seawall structure. A coarse-resolution (∼2 km) model simulation led to an overestimation of lateral diffusion and thus faster dispersion of 137Cs from the coast to the deep ocean, while advective processes played a more significant role when the model resolution at and around the FNPP was refined to ∼5 m. By resolving the pathways from the leaking source to the southern and northern discharge canals, the high-resolution model better predicted the 137Cs spreading in the inner shelf where in situ measurements were made at 30 km off the coast. The overestimation of 137Cs concentration near the coast is thought to be due to the omission of sedimentation and biogeochemical processes as well as uncertainties in the amount of 137Cs leaking from the source in the model. As a result, a biogeochemical module should be included in the model for more realistic simulations of the fate and spreading of 137Cs in the ocean.

Notizen: In this paper, we report the successful observation of the hybrid multiple diffraction (hybrid MD) in Renninger scans (RS) [M. Renninger, Z. Kristallogr. 106, 141 (1937)]. These diffractions occur when the beam first diffracted by an inclined layer (or substrate) plane with respect to the sample surface crosses the interface layer/substrate to be rescattered by another substrate (or layer) plane towards the detector. The construction of an incidence diagram allows to establish the occurrence of the hybrid MD for heteroepitaxial layers. The layer imperfection (mosaic spread) is used to explain these extra features in RS together along the normal MD features. The case of a GaAs layer grown on a Si substrate is investigated.

Notizen: An experimental facility for carrying out x-ray multiple diffraction (XRMD) studies in parallel-beam geometry using the Daresbury synchrotron radiation source and its application in the study of coherency of an epilayered sample are described. Experimental high-resolution Renninger scans (RS) about GaAs(006) are presented and the pseudoforbidden "Aufhellung'' eight-beam (000,006,020,042,044,026,02¯4,02¯2) case has been fully resolved for the first time using the setup which involves a double-crystal six-circle scattering geometry and data acquisition providing optimal conditions for these scans to be obtained. A sample of InGaAs/AlGaInAs/InP(001) epilayered material was also examined and high-resolution RS from the bulk, substrate, and epitaxial overlayers were obtained. The diffraction wavelength used was determined directly from the bulk RS as λ=(1.4695±0.0005) A(ring). The data clearly reveal a number of interesting XRMD features which allow for the sample characterization. The layer parallel lattice parameter can be determined either from the epilayer tetragonal distortion in the layer RS or from the MORSI (modulation of the RS intensity due to the presence of the epilayers) [Greenberg & Ladell, Appl. Phys. Lett. 50, 436 (1987)] dips in the substrate RS. These dips can also provide simultaneous information on relative tilt and rotation between both layer/substrate lattices. The fitting of the position and profile of the three-beam surface peaks allows the determination of the layer parallel lattice parameter and the layer mosaic spread on the sample surface plane. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We study magnetic properties of micron- and submicron-scale ultrathin ferromagnetic films with uniaxial anisotropy by means of a two-dimensional Ising model with both exchange and dipolar interactions using both a mean field approximation and a Monte Carlo method. We find that, in those films, the size of the surface area is an important parameter to determine their magnetic properties. In particular, we find three lattice size ranges A, B, and C. In the range A (small lattices), the model exhibits properties similar to those of a usual Ising model. In the range B (moderate lattices), the specific heat exhibits a double peak around T1 and T2 (〈T1) and the magnetization increases abruptly around T2 like that in the first order phase transition. In the range C (large lattices), the magnetization does not increase but the specific heat still exhibits a double peak. In usual materials, the crossover length between the ranges A and B will be of order of submicrons. Then a special attention should be paid to their sizes for analyzing their magnetic properties. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The effect of UV preionization by a KrF laser on CO2-laser-induced optical breakdown is studied experimentally. The electron number density as well as the breakdown probability is measured as a function of KrF-laser energy. The results show that the KrF-laser preionization is quite effective in initiating the optical breakdown. Once a breakdown is initiated, however, the number of produced electrons is found to be independent of the KrF-laser energy.

Notizen: The irradiation of a KrF laser (248 nm) into the interelectrode space affects the electric flashover characteristics there. The results obtained show that negative oxygen ions dominate formation of the interelectrode arc in air. A laser beam is introduced parallel to the interelectrode axis and the equipment is arranged to prevent the occurrence of photoelectric effects on the electrode surfaces. The time separation between laser firing and application of the interelectrode voltage is varied from 10 ns to 10 ms. The interelectrode spacing is set in the range 2–12 cm. The arc formation time and the flashover probability are measured. The initial ion number density is estimated experimentally to be on the order of 1011 cm−3 throughout the channel.

Notizen: The effect of UV preionization on the optical gas breakdown induced by a CO2 laser pulse is studied experimentally. In the present work a UV spark plug and a pulsed CO2 laser are used as the UV and IR sources, respectively. The experiments are carried out for helium and some other common gases in the pressure range of 10–1000 Torr to determine the breakdown probability. For all of the gases under study the probability appears higher when the gas is UV preionized. These results show the importance of the seed electrons for the IR-induced gas breakdown supporting the theory that the cascade ionization process is dominating in the IR region requiring seed electrons to initiate the process. Oscilloscopic waveforms of the optical breakdown spark fluorescence are also observed which shows the optical breakdown occurs more rapidly when the gas is UV preionized.

Notizen: In order to investigate the effects of airway cooling on bronchial responsiveness in normal subjects, we measured bronchial responsiveness to inhaled methacholine with and without the inhalation of cold air. Two out of seven subjects showed an increase in baseline respiratory resistance (Rrs) during cooling of the airway but the other five subjects showed little change in their baseline Rrs. All subjects increased bronchial responsiveness to methacholine. Additionally, the threshold dose of methacholine decreased to one-third of the control dose with cooling of the airway. We speculate that airway cooling increased bronchial responsiveness to methacholine in normal subjects presumably due to increased vagal tone, increased alpha-adrenergic activity and/or a release of chemical mediators.

Notizen: A 61-year-old female presented with blurry vision. Questioning revealed “Flu-like” symptoms preceding the blurry vision by two weeks. An ophthalmologist diagnosed anterior granulomatous dermatitis, which improved with prednisolone drops. One month later, an “itchy rash” and constitutional symptoms including fever, night sweats, and weight loss were reported. Physical examination revealed a viral-type maculopapular eruption over the trunk and proximal extremities. A few weeks later, repeat examination showed progression to a diffuse, reddish-brown, slightly edematous, papular eruption. Lymphadenopathy was not present. Laboratory data revealed a normochromic normocytic anemia, a polyclonal gammopathy, and an elevated ESR. Punch biopsies on two occasions showed a proliferation of mononucleated and multinucleated histiocytic cells with abundant pink cytoplasm. Emperipolesis was easily demonstrated. A background of plasma cells and small lymphocytes were noted. Stains for organisms were negative, and polarizable material was not present. By immunohistochemistry, histiocytes marked with S-100 but were negative for CD1a. A diagnosis of cutaneous Rosai Dorfman was made. The cutaneous symptoms improved over six months without medical therapy. Cutaneous Rosai Dorfman disease with constitutional symptoms and laboratory evidence of systemic involvement but without lymphadenopathy has not been previously described. This unusual case suggests that a wider spectrum of disease presentation may exist.
