    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die mikrobiologischen, klinischen und röntgenologischen Befunde eines zerebralen Tuberkuloms wurden bei vier Patienten mit und fünf Patienten ohne HIV-Infektion verglichen. Die Studie wurde während der vergangenen 14 Jahre durchgeführt. Die Computertomogramme (CT) wurden blind ausgewertet. Die klinische Symptomatik des zerebralen Tuberkuloms bei HIV-negativen Patienten ist durch Krampfanfälle charakterisiert, die bei HIV-positiven Patienten nicht beobachtet wurden. Alle vier HIV-infizierten Patienten hatten Kopfschmerzen und Fieber. Im Liquor wurde der Befund einer lymphozytären Meningitis erhoben. Zwei HIV-negative und drei HIV-positive Patienten hatten zugleich eine extrazerebrale Tuberkulose. Bei HIV-infizierten Patienten stellte das zerebrale Tuberkulom eine sekundäre Manifestation einer disseminierten Tuberkulose dar. In unserer kleinen Patientengruppe bot das zerebrale Tuberkulom im Spotan-CT bei HIV-positiven Patienten das Bild einer hypodensen Läsion, bei den HIV-negativen Patienten hingegen einer hyperdensen Läsion. Bei zwei Patienten jeder Gruppe fand sich eine Ringverstärkung. Das zerebrale Tuberkulom wurde bei den HIV-positiven Patienten etwa nach vier Wochen, bei einigen der HIV-negativen Patienten aber erst nach 16 Wochen diagnostiziert. Bei den letztgenannten Patienten bestand Verdacht auf einen Hirntumor oder einen bakteriellen Abszeß. Die diagnostische Kraniotomie war daher bei den HIV-negativen Patienten erforderlich. In je einem Fall führte das zerebrale Tuberkulom zum Tode, bei allen anderen Patienten trat nach Behandlung Besserung ein.
    Notes: Summary The microbiological, clinical and radiological findings of cerebral tuberculomas in four patients with and in five patients without HIV infection were compared. The study was carried out during the last 14 years. The CT scans were analyzed in a blinded fashion. Cerebral tuberculoma in HIV-negative patients was clinically characterized by seizures, while in HIV-positive patients this finding was absent. All four HIV-infected patients had headache and fever and their CSF showed lymphocytic meningitis. Two HIV-negative and three HIV-positive patients had concurrent extracerebral tuberculosis. In HIV-infected patients, the cerebral tuberculoma was a secondary finding of disseminated tuberculosis. In our small patient samples, the cerebral tuberculoma presented as spontaneous hypodense cerebral lesions in all the HIV-positive patients but as a hyperdense cerebral lesion in the HIV-negative patients. Two patients of each group had ring enhancement lesions. Cerebral tuberculoma was diagnosed in about 4 weeks for HIV-positive patients, but took some 16 weeks for HIV-negative patients, the latter being first suspected of having a cerebral tumor or bacterial abscess. Diagnostic craniotomy was thus necessary for the HIV-negative patients. One patient of each group died as a consequence of cerebral tuberculoma, all the remaining patients improved with treatment.

    Description: The Holocene volcanism at El Hierro consists of basaltic monogenetic volcanic fields associated with o the three rift systems present in this island. In this work we report preliminary petrological and geochemical data of Holocene lava flows belonging to the WNW-striking rift. Sampling was focused in three zones: Orchilla, Verodal-Sabinosa, and Tanganasoga. Petrography of the studied lavas shows that they are homogeneous. All samples are porphyritic with macrocrysts of clinopyroxene and olivine immersed in a groundmass formed by microcrysts of plagioclase, Fe-Ti oxides and clinopyroxene. Clinopyroxenes are diopsides, olivines have forsterite contents ranging from 74 to 84 % and anorthite in plagioclase varies from 66 to 76% (labradorite). Whole-rock geochemical results evidence that all magmas are basic in composition, ranging from picrobasalts to phonotephrites. Major, trace elements and isotope support fractional crystallization as the main process of magma evolution. However, petrography and chemistry of clinopyroxene cores agree with a xenocrystic nature of some of them. We suggest that these clinopyroxene cores crystallized from a genetically related magma and subsequently were entrapped or cannibalized by the basic rising magmas.

    Description: In their article, Geyer and Martí (2010) propose that the evolution and origin of the volcanic islands which constitute the Canarian archipelago are strongly controlled by regional tectonic “Atlantic” and “African” structures. In their Fig. 1a they sketch the geometry of the Iberian and Moroccan microplates and the respective boundary zones with respect to Africa (Nubia) and Eurasia (Mantovani et al., 2007). Dashed lines indicating presumed plate boundaries cross the Canarian archipelago, which will therefore be located along a lithospheric fracture, the boundary between the Moroccan and African (Nubia) microplates. This regional fracture extends from the Atlas to the Atlantis fracture zone, coinciding in parts with the propagating fracture postulated by Anguita and Hernán (1975). In Fig. 1b of Geyer and Martí (2010), dashed lines indicate the orientation of the most evident tectonic structures visible on the ocean floor. As we show in this comment, all of these mapped “faults” are artifacts.

    Description: The northeast rift zone of Tenerife presents a superb opportunity to study the entire cycle of activity of an oceanic rift zone. Field geology, isotopic dating, and magnetic stratigraphy provide a reliable temporal and spatial framework for the evolution of the NE rift zone, which includes a period of very fast growth toward instability (between ca. 1.1 and 0.83 Ma) followed by three successive large landslides: the Micheque and Guimar collapses, which occurred approximately contemporaneously at ca. 830 ka and on either side of the rift, and the La Orotava landslide (between 690 {+/-} 10 and 566 {+/-} 13 ka). Our observations suggest that Canarian rift zones show similar patterns of development, which often includes overgrowth, instability, and lateral collapses. Collapses of the rift flanks disrupt established fissural feeding systems, favoring magma ascent and shallow emplacement, which in turn leads to magma differentiation and intermediate to felsic nested eruptions. Rifts and their collapses may therefore act as an important factor in providing architectural and petrological variability to oceanic volcanoes. Conversely, the presence of substantial felsic volcanism in rift settings may indicate the presence of earlier landslide scars, even if concealed by postcollapse volcanism. Comparative analysis of the main rifts in the Canary Islands outlines this general evolutionary pattern: (1) growth of an increasingly high and steep ridge by concentrated basaltic fissure eruptions; (2) flank collapse and catastrophic disruption of the established feeder system of the rift; (3) postcollapse centralized nested volcanism, commonly evolving from initially ultramafic-mafic to terminal felsic compositions (trachytes, phonolites); and (4) progressive decline of nested eruptive activity.

    Description: Los primeros indicios de una posible erupción volcánica en El Hierro se percibieron a partir de julio de 2011 en forma de sismos de baja intensidad pero anormalmente numerosos. La intensificación de la sismicidad culminó con el inicio de la erupción submarina el 10 de octubre de 2011 a unos 2 km al sur de La Restinga. La sismicidad y deformación del terreno que precedieron y acompañaron a esta erupción han permitido reconstruir las principales fases de actividad volcánica: 1) generación y ascenso del magma con migración de los hipocentros sísmicos desde el norte, en el Golfo, hasta el rift sur, en La Restinga, marcando la apertura hidráulica del conducto magmático; y 2) inicio y continuidad de la erupción volcánica evidenciada por un tremor armónico continuo de intensidad variable en el tiempo. Las características observadas a lo largo de la erupción, principalmente localización, profundidad y evolución morfológica del foco emisor, así como emisión de materiales volcánicos flotantes, inicialmente con un núcleo blanco poroso (procedentes de la fusión parcial de sedimentos de la capa superior de la corteza oceánica anteriores a la construcción del edificio insular de El Hierro) envuelto por una corteza basanítica y después huecas (lava balloons), se han correspondido con una erupción submarina fisural profunda sin que nunca hayan intervenido mecanismos más explosivos tipo surtseyano. La erupción se mantuvo activa durante unos cinco meses, dándose por finalizada en marzo del 2012, convirtiéndose de este modo en la segunda erupción histórica más longeva de Canarias después de la de Timanfaya (1730-36) en Lanzarote. Esta erupción ha supuesto la primera oportunidad en 40 años de gestionar una crisis volcánica en Canarias y de analizar las observaciones e interpretaciones y las decisiones adoptadas, con objeto de mejorar la gestión de futuras crisis volcánicas. El Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) se encargó de adquirir y analizar la información sísmica y de deformación durante todo el proceso. Sin embargo, no se dispuso inicialmente de un barco oceanográfico que realizara estudios sistemáticos de la profundidad y progresión de la erupción, así como de toma de muestras de los materiales emitidos (piroclastos y lavas), elementos claves para la determinación de la peligrosidad eruptiva. Estas deficiencias en el seguimiento científico del proceso eruptivo dificultaron en algunos momentos la toma de decisiones de protección civil. El análisis de la crisis ha puesto de manifiesto que, aunque se disponga de una infraestructura técnica adecuada para la detección temprana de crisis eruptivas en el archipiélago, de poco valen las medidas administrativas planificadas sin un seguimiento científico continuo e integrador del proceso eruptivo, abierto a la colaboración científica nacional e internacional.

    Description: In this paper, we develop a semi-analytic model of a supernova which goes off in the centre of a stellar cluster. The supernova remnant interacts with a stratified, pre-existent outflow produced by the winds of the cluster stars. We compare our semi-analytic model with numerical simulations using the spherically symmetric Euler equations with appropriate mass and energy source terms. We find good agreement between these two approaches, and we find that for typical parameters the blast wave is likely to reach the Taylor–Sedov regime outside the cluster radius. We also calculate the predicted X-ray luminosity of the flow as a function of time, and we obtain its dependence on the outer radius and the number of stars of the cluster.

    Description: Massive young star clusters contain dozens or hundreds of massive stars that inject mechanical energy in the form of winds and supernova explosions, producing an outflow which expands into their surrounding medium, shocking it and forming structures called superbubbles. The regions of shocked material can have temperatures in excess of 10 6  K, and emit mainly in thermal X-rays (soft and hard). This X-ray emission is strongly affected by the action of thermal conduction, as well as by the metallicity of the material injected by the massive stars. We present three-dimensional numerical simulations exploring these two effects, metallicity of the stellar winds and supernova explosions, as well as thermal conduction.
