    Notes: Summary Neuropathologic findings are described in 37 patients autopsied after one or more orthotopic liver transplants. Gross or microscopic lesions were observed in almost all patients, including anoxic-ischemic change, hemorrhages and/or infarcts, and opportunistic infections by fungi (most commonly Aspergillus) and rarely viruses (cytomegalovirus). Central pontine and extrapontine myelinolysis was commonly observed, and appeared to result from severe multifactorial metabolic abnormalities in the perioperative period. Low-grade (microglial nodule) encephalitis without an obvious pathogen was often encountered. Common clinical neurologic abnormalities included encephalopathy, seizures (myoclonic, focal or generalized), obtundation and coma. These were found more commonly than focal findings, but clinical features in a given patient were not uniformly predictive of underlying neuropathologic change.

    Notes: Abstract The literature regarding the effect of nicotine and cigarette smoke on gastric blood flow is conflicting. The hydrogen gas clearance technique was used to measure the effects of nicotine and cigarette smoke on basal gastric mucosal blood flow in anesthetized rats. Blood flow was measured before, during, and after treatment with either intravenous nicotine (4 or 40 μg/kg/min) or inhaled cigarette smoke (nicotine or nicotine free). Neither intravenous nicotine nor cigarette smoke significantly altered gastric mucosal blood flow. On the other hand, hypotension produced by hemorrhage significantly decreased mucosal blood flow (P〈0.05). Thus the technique used could detect a decrease in blood flow. These findings indicate that in the anesthetized rats, hypotension but not intravenous nicotine or cigarette smoke, in the doses given, reduce gastric mucosal blood flow.

    Notes: Abstract Heparin has been shown to ameliorateinflammatory bowel disease in several series. Inaddition to its anticoagulant properties, heparin hasnumerous other effects that may be beneficial ininflammatory bowel disease. Other sulfated polysaccharides,such as dextran sulfate, cause colitis in mice throughunknown mechanisms. We postulate that dextran sulfateand heparin may act via similar pathways with opposite effects. To examine this thesis, theeffect of heparin on dextran sulfate-induced colitis wasstudied. Swiss-Webster mice were given 5% dextransulfate in their drinking water for five days to induce colitis. Heparin was given boththerapeutically after the induction of colitis andprophylactically by subcutaneous injections, with salineinjections given in controls. Histologic sections ofcolon were randomized and graded for colitis.Heparinized animals showed no significant difference inthe pattern or severity of colitis when compared tocontrol animals. It is concluded that heparin does not ameliorate the murine colitis induced bydextran sulfate in the doses given.

    Notes: Abstract 3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A lyase (HL) is a homodimeric mitochondrial matrix enzyme that catalyzes the last step of ketogenesis. Using a human HL cDNA as a probe, we isolated a 1.4-kb mouse HL cDNA (HLM) from a mouse liver library and extended the sequence in the 5′ direction, using RACE PCR to include the complete coding sequence. The nucleotide sequence of the mouse HL coding region is 85.7% identical to human HL, and 52.6% to Ps. mevalonii HL. Peptide identities of 87.4% and 54.3% respectively were observed. Southern analysis of 29 strains of laboratory mice and of Mus spretus revealed a total of about 25 kb of hybridizing fragments and three polymorphic fragments in both EcoRI and HindIII digestions. The mouse HL locus (Hmgcl) was localized on Chromosome (Chr) 4: Pmv-19-12.6±3.6 cM-Hmgcl-7.3±2.3 cM-Xmv-8-1.5±1.0 cM-Gpd1. The human HL locus (HMGCL) was mapped to distal Chr 1p by analysis of a human-hamster hybrid cell panel and by in situ hybridization.

    Description: The goal of the EXport Processes in the Ocean from RemoTe Sensing (EXPORTS) field campaign is to develop a predictive understanding of the export, fate, and carbon cycle impacts of global ocean net primary production. To accomplish this goal, observations of export flux pathways, plankton community composition, food web processes, and optical, physical, and biogeochemical (BGC) properties are needed over a range of ecosystem states. Here we introduce the first EXPORTS field deployment to Ocean Station Papa in the Northeast Pacific Ocean during summer of 2018, providing context for other papers in this special collection. The experiment was conducted with two ships: a Process Ship, focused on ecological rates, BGC fluxes, temporal changes in food web, and BGC and optical properties, that followed an instrumented Lagrangian float; and a Survey Ship that sampled BGC and optical properties in spatial patterns around the Process Ship. An array of autonomous underwater assets provided measurements over a range of spatial and temporal scales, and partnering programs and remote sensing observations provided additional observational context. The oceanographic setting was typical of late-summer conditions at Ocean Station Papa: a shallow mixed layer, strong vertical and weak horizontal gradients in hydrographic properties, sluggish sub-inertial currents, elevated macronutrient concentrations and low phytoplankton abundances. Although nutrient concentrations were consistent with previous observations, mixed layer chlorophyll was lower than typically observed, resulting in a deeper euphotic zone. Analyses of surface layer temperature and salinity found three distinct surface water types, allowing for diagnosis of whether observed changes were spatial or temporal. The 2018 EXPORTS field deployment is among the most comprehensive biological pump studies ever conducted. A second deployment to the North Atlantic Ocean occurred in spring 2021, which will be followed by focused work on data synthesis and modeling using the entire EXPORTS data set.

    Description: Purpose To investigate the feasibility of detecting a living cell monolayer labeled with gadoterate (Gd-DOTA) in a microfluidic environment, by micromagnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a 2.35T small-animal system. The development of new targeted contrast agents (CAs) requires proof-of-concept studies in order to establish the detectability of the CA and to predict the role of biodistribution in its uptake mechanisms. A promising approach is to carefully mimic the in vivo pharmacokinetic context with reduced experimental complexity compared to in vivo situations. Materials and Methods A dedicated experimental system was built by combining a microfluidic slide and a radiofrequency probe based on a 6 mm diameter multiturn transmission-line resonator. Adherent KB cells were incubated with different concentrations of Gd. MRI data were acquired at 2.35T with a 3D gradient echo and a resolution of 12.4 μm perpendicular to the cell layer. The longitudinal relaxation rate, R 1 , was measured as a function of the amount of Gd internalized by the cells. Results R 1 measurements for different Gd concentrations per cell were performed using data with an signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 100. Relaxation-rate variations ΔR 1 of 0.035 s −1 were measured. A quenching effect was observed at Gd concentrations above 20 fmol/cell. Conclusion Our results suggest that this dedicated experimental system is suitable for specifically assessing new high-relaxivity targeted CAs under real-time uptake conditions. J. Magn. Reson.
